Penn Cycle

The mechanic did good work, but it was expensive, and he was rude. With so many bike shops in the area, next time I’ll go somewhere else.

I had the pleasure of utilizing Penn Cycles for the National Senior Games as my bicycle middle-​man.
That is to say that I sent my race bike via Fed Ex to the shop from Texas. The shop kept in constant contact with me from the get-​go. Which is so critical.
Once the bike arrived, they professionally put it together and even made some tweaks too.
I participated in four different cycling events at two different venues.
Obviously, I was extremely nervous about the condition of my bike. Hell, why lie? I was scared if it would even be there on time or in one piece.
Not only did David make it easy to find but Gal, the mechanics, even let me use his personal Garmin mount for the first two races.
Bike worked like a charm and a Gal was always there to make any tweaks I needed.
I always say that you can tell a lot about s bike shop based upon how their mechanics act while providing ‘free’ support at events. Especially if they are not their events per se.
Going by that assessment means that Penn Cycles is top of the line! Besides all the help Gal gave me personally, I saw him change tires, upgrade software on a Cannondale (he told the lady he noticed she needed it and he could do it between races), and was constantly busy instead of hiding out.
The last thing you want to worry about at Nationals is your bike. Dave had my bike ready to go at all four races. Even leaving me notes to remind me to check something he noticed. That my friends is above and beyond.
Obviously, Gal and Dave are the norm at this shop and you would be very smart to use them as your bike shop for life. I know that if I didn’t live in Texas that they would definitely be my shop.

Paid $ 260 for Pedals and Shoes, came back to have them swap out the pedals on my bike. They wanted to charge me to do so, when the sales associate said they’d «take care of it for me». The mechanic then «huffed» at me when I told him that was the case and said «we have to get paid back here». I confronted him for «huffing» at me, saying I would never do that to one of my customers, he put the wrench down and told me to take my bike somewhere else. Guess what, I did and just around the corner, The Alternative Bike and Board Shop did it for free. Guess I didn’t mention to Penn that I’m buying a road bike next week. They’ve lost my business forever and The Alt just gained it.

Breaks were almost non-​functional, and did not feel safe riding, so dropped by on a Friday night ride with friends. Was in the store for 2 minutes and back out with breaks working great (:

I returned to Penn Cycle in Uptown (really Lyn-​Lake) to look at used bikes. Because I’m an «afterwork, for exercise» kind of bicyclist, I couldn’t see investing $ 1+K in a new bicycle that I would only ride around the lakes in the evening for exercise. Although they had a small selection of used bikes, I did find one that suited me. Again, the sales staff was extremely helpful and provided a lot of basic information about the bike. They’re extremely knowledgeable and not at all aloof for those of us who aren’t as serious about bicycling as they are. And they gladly swapped out pedals for my old bike to new.

We got it in our heads that we wanted to go on a cycling vacation in Minneapolis. It turned out to be ingenious except that I didn’t bring (or own) padded bike shorts! After a couple of days of all-​day riding around Minneapolis, my tooshie was pretty sore and was starting to cramp my groove!
Penn Cycle hooked me up with some Garneau shorts for $ 99.99. I was *this* close to buying a pair of Bontrager shorts that were on sale and at least $ 20 cheaper. I liked the black reflective bands and thought they looked über sporty; however, M and the sales guy insisted that the Garneau shorts were better (at least on me).
I was feeling like a splurge and got a matching Garneau jersey for $ 54.99. Then, because I was on vacation, I bought six postcards at $ 0.99 each. When the check-​out person had trouble ringing up my purchases I felt a twinge of hope that his challenges might result in a better total for me! Unfortunately not.
The store was very well organized. It felt airy because of the wide spaces between racks and displays. There was an open second floor that looked down on the ground level. We saw a decent amount of bicycles and bike accessories. There was an adequate changing room.

This store is small, but has a great selection of women’s products — much more than larger nearby bike stores. A friendly, welcoming vibe for bicyclists of all sorts. Someone quickly helped me find exactly what I was looking for.

Went there to buy two bikes. No one came to help or say anything to us. Terrible service and the store has no respect for new bike buyers. Be aware when you don’t know much about bikes!

Tim and his team here are awesome and Andy will have your machine totally humming. While it’s a little tricky to park (when I’m not on my bike), it’s a great store.

My bike is transportation, it is not a lifestyle choice, a statement, or a friend. It does not have a name. When the chain slips (because I change gears like a moron) I can put it back on myself, that’s the extent of my DIY abilities.
So when it was time to buy a bike I went about every single place you could go, and was treated in varying ways from lowly moron not worth talking to to friendly enough, but overselling me like crazy. Penn at THIS location was non d-​bag, honest, had good prices and hooked me up with a Trek that I have developed a softer spot for than I ever thought.
Great shop if you’re a noob.

Was getting ready to participate in my first triathalon and these guys were able to have my bike ready to go with new tires and brakes tightened rather quickly. Very helpful, explained what they did and affordable. While not a huge establishment, they were able to get the job done.

This place is way too small, they have only ½ the selection of the Penn I normally go to in Minnetonka and none of the staff there asked me if I needed help.

I love a good bike store and Penn cycle is just that!
They replaced both of my bike tires in under a ½ hour one day, and I brought my bike back for a tune-​up (nearing 30 Days of Biking) and again, they did a great job sprucing up my shabby vintage Schwinn.
When I live this close it’s impossible for me to not stop in and look through the bike goodies, grab a trail map & some «People for Bikes» buttons. Thanks, Penn!

Andy got me in and out in minutes. Penn is one of a few shops that makes me feel comfortable. Thanks againa and you know all be back!

My experience at Penn Cycle was mixed. I came in with a flat tire and it was fixed in less than 10 minutes on the spot. However, I felt the attitude given to me by the employee was unnecessary (he acted like I was an idiot for not knowing if the tube or the tire was the problem), and I ended up paying more for the five minutes of labor than the tube itself. A few weeks later I went with a friend and that time we didn’t get charged for labor at all so I’m pretty confused. As a customer I felt that I was not valued, and next time I will definitely go somewhere else to get the same service performed.

Penn Cycle is fantastic!
After being in a desperate search for a descent replacement «road shoe» before the start of the weekend, I was elated to have found this place.
It was shortly before closing time (9 p.m.) but the staff was more than accomidating to help me find the perfect product. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and patient throughout the entire process.
The store/​products themselves are reasonably priced and offer a noteable choice of clearance/​reduced products.
I would highly recommend this store if in the Uptown area.

Really great service and fast too. Friendly staff. If the prices for repairs were a little lower I’d have no problem giving them 5 stars.

A combination of wanting to get fit and try something new made me decide to start biking. I tried some other shops but felt a bit intimidated being a newbie biker. Here I felt completely comfortable.
The staff were really knowledgeable and knew what questions to ask to ensure I got the right size of bike. After a quick test ride on the Greenway I bought the bike. They do try and sell a load of extras when you buy the bike but they weren’t pushy and didn’t ask again when I said no thank you.
I’m really impressed with the after service if you come back within 90 days they will give your bike a tune up. I had that done and I was impressed with the work done. All the little niggles I had with the bike they rectified.
Finally I had a flat which they replaced. You pay for the fitting but they really checked the bike to make sure there was nothing wrong before fitting the new tire on.

I’m picky about bike mechanics, and probably bike stores in general.
I could quickly tell Penn was my kind of place, because I stopped in at least twice just to chat with their mechanic about how I might fix a bike myself.
Now, maybe I was going to buy a part, or maybe he could convince me to bring it in for them to repair, but the conversations never went that way. It was never about the sale, it was about what my problem was and what my options were.
The one time I brought something in and had them fix, I was lucky enough that it was quick and could be done right in front of me. They explained some things, and I think in the future I will be able to avoid the problem or fix it myself. Again, seemingly putting my interests ahead of theirs.
I also have to appreciate that their mechanics seem to have or appreciate a certain amount of ingenuity when it comes to repairs. I have an old bike I fixed up, with some mismatched parts held together by rubber cement and good intentions. Another bike store couldn’t abide this, but Penn understands sometimes it just needs to work. I don’t ride expensive, high performance bikes, I ride workhorses. They get that. At the same time, I have friends who bring in high performance stuff, so they certainly seem to be able to handle that as well.
As if all this weren’t enough, they’re pretty close to me, so they beat out a couple other bike stores I like. Nothing feels sillier than loading a wounded bike into a car to drive it to a shop.
I trust this place with my bike. It you’re serious about biking, you know that’s like saying you trust them with your children.
Note: I would not trust them with my children. No offense.

i have to give a shoutout to my guys at penn cycle. this bike shop has saved me more times than i can count!
everyone here is super knowledgeable. yeah, they’re trying to sell you things, but i’ve learned to ask a lot of questions and end up putting my trust in them. i walk out of there having learned a thing or two, because they’re totally willing to spend time with you, and with whatever it was that they recommended in the first place. i have yet to be disappointed.
i got an awesome deal on a bike here over a year ago and, after the amazing service i received, i never doubt going back there. a week ago, i had an «i’m a girl’ moment — had a flat for the first time on my new bike, and the lever was stuck. couldn’t get the wheel off. i threw my bike in my car and ran over to penn.
the guys must have read the panic/​embarrassment on my face and helped me as soon as they finished the bikes they were working on. again, they answered every question and gave me a lot of tips. i got a little bike lesson and my tire changed for $ 15. not bad at all in my book :)
their service is great — stop in and see them! tell them the chick who bought a lemond from them last summer sent you.
