History

Established in 1931.

The Straughan Hardware story begins back in 1931 when the Ben D. Straughan Company was established and located at 26 North 8^th Street, Minneapolis, MN. Our founder, George Benson David Straughan, was born in Ontario, Canada in 1880 and was of Scottish decent. His father and mother were small business owners who ran a printing shop and a movie theatre so it must have been in Ben’s blood when he followed his calling to start his own small business specializing in doors and builder’s hardware, hinges, locks, closers, etc. Ben carried the Sargent line and back then Sargent made a lot more than just builder’s hardware. During the 1930’s he supplied hardware for many local residences as well as commercial properties. This has paved the way for what Straughan Hardware is today.

Eric Magdal started working at Straughan Hardware in 1985 as a stock boy and delivery driver. Learning the business from the ground up he worked his way through the company into sales and estimating. Eric and his wife Lori purchased the company in 1997. Since then sales have tripled along with the number of employees. The hollow metal shop was added along with an installation division. For the first time Straughan Hardware could supply and install the total opening
