Specialties

We are a ‘clean air salon’; our hair coloring and bleaching products are free from ammonia, which leaves the hair healthier, shinier, and odor-​free.

We’re also «curly hair friendly». Although we don’t tout or subscribe to one particular methodology, all stylists receive training on dry, curl-​by-​curl hair cutting for curly hair. Cutting curls in their natural state removes the fear of overly shrunken trims and «Christmas tree» layers. When you book a curly cut, come with your hair dry, and styled as you normally do when you wear it curly.

All of our retail products are free of petrochemicals, parabens, artificial fragrances, plastics, silicone, and include wildcrafted and organic ingredients.

History

Established in 2011.

We created The Hive with some of the best attributes of our favorite salons and with the open-​air vibe of old-​school beauty parlors; a cheery interior, a variety of magazines for inspiration, hot coffee and teas, outgoing individuals, and amazing hair care products fill our space. It’s a salon you can feel relaxed in, and we invite you to come check us out, and see what the «buzz» is about.

Going going to add another star. The owner of the salon sent me a note, which I very much appreciated. While I don’t think I’ll be going back to try things out again, I’m of the opinion that one-​stars are deserved for businesses that don’t care or value clients, and the owner has clearly demonstrated she cares and values clients. Okay, this is serious. Great salon experience and BEST haircut of my life! I have really temperamental hair, like, I usually leave my hair appointments just go to fix my hair before going out. Felicia is mad talented, and she’s a cool chick too, so that didn’t suck. I got up from the chair when she had finished thinking, «who’s hair is on my head?» I loved it. She also recommended some heavenly hair care but also didn’t pressure me to buy anything, now I want to go back and buy it. My hair looked SO damn good all day, I had to keep checking the mirror to make sure I hadn’t imagined it. Can’t wait for my next appointment. Thanks, Felicia!

Have gotten several curly cuts from becca and for the first time in my life am starting to like (not yet loving) my curly hair. She taught me how to actually take care of my dry, knotted, unruly hair. So thankful I found this place. Cut is $ 60. Bought some products too, very expensive, but are really helping my hair improve. Great service, clean salon, great staff.

If you have curly hair, you MUST go here! Georgia has done amazing things with my hair and I could not be happier. She always gives me the best cut and dries my hair so that I walk out with the bounciest of curls. :) There’s also the facial steam towel for while you’re getting your hair washed. The salon itself is great too — very friendly staff, organic teas available, and environmentally-​friendly products. Love, love, love The Hive!

If you have curly hair, going to a new salon is pretty dang scary. Leaving a salon looking like Cousin It is a definite possibility. Not so at The Hive. Best haircut of my life, full stop.
The ladies working the front desk are extremely friendly. SO friendly. Everyone working there is, actually.
If you want some refreshments when you walk in, there is water, coffee, and tea available. And, being that this is an environmentally-​friendly salon, there are no plastic cups, just ceramic mugs and glassware (which I love and think adds a really nice homey feel).
The stylists are extremely nice and relaxed, and you never have that «this is so awkward what do I speak to this person about while they massage my face» feeling.
Most importantly, my hair looks just as great a week later as it did the day that Eric styled it. The stylists understand your hair, they «get» curls, and they style it individually to how your curls fall. They cut it so that it is EXTREMELY manageable for you to make it look fantastic without doing very much.
If you have curly hair and you are looking for a new salon, you have found it. Just go. If you don’t like your haircut, you’re probably wrong, but I’ll buy you a cup of coffee anyways.

This salon is fantastic! Felicia gave me a fantastic cut. The entire experience was wonderful, especially the warm towel facial and scalp massage. Felicia really listened to what I wanted, created a beautiful look, and taught me an easy way to style my hair into perfect ringlets. I will definitely be back for another cut soon! Highly recommend this salon to curly girls searching for a stylist.

I am new to the NE Area. I have driven past this place every day on my way to/​from work. I needed a hair cut badly, my normal stylist at a different shop was booked full for the next two weeks. I decided to give this place a call. What a mistake.
I called, found out that they had openings for the same day. I scheduled with Georgia whom was a middle priced stylist, $ 45 for a hair cut. That is what I pay for my normal stylist. The only problem with making an appointment there is that they require a credit card to go on file just incase you cancel your appointment, with in 24 hours. I was making a same day appointment.
I showed up 30 mins early and thank the gods I did. It took the lady forever to understand what I wanted. I guess that asymmetrical inverted bob is not descriptive enough. I though that it was pretty straight forward. I didn’t have a picture unfortunately. What she did to my hair was terrible, then she rushed me out the door.
I called the manager the next day and she offered to have my hair fixed which was fine. But then refused to refund my cost. Not only did I have my hair cut almost 4 inches shorter then I wanted but I wasted 5 hours total in the salon. I would think twice before going here. I will not be returning.

Before I went in even for my first haircut, I followed their styling tips and what a difference they made to my temperamental curly hair! Then I had my first dry-​hair cut which is a must forevermore. The cut was great: flattering to my face shape and tailored exactly for my curls and my very low-​maintenance routine. Not only that, but my hair grew out really well with no heavy sections. Plus I didn’t have to go home and throw out all my hair products.
Suffice it to say, I keep going back to Erik. Not only do I get great cuts, but he’s a cool dude with a laid-​back vibe. I love the hot towel and quick head massage with the shampoo – spa treatment is always nice.
The place to come if you have crazy, curly hair of any kind.

when i moved away from mpls and had to find somebody new to do my hair, i realized how totally remiss i was in not singing the praises of the hive!
i first came across Jen at another salon RIGHT before she opened the hive, but she gave me her card and i followed her there because i loved that haircut so much and there i stayed for the next 4 – 5 years, until i left MN.
i’ve got very thick, naturally wavy, long hair, which translates to some bad cuts and blowouts when people aren’t sure how to deal, but i always got a GREAT result with both at the hive. usually Jen left me wanting to make plans so i could go out and show off how good my hair looked after my appointments! she is so good at figuring out how to translate what you say you want your hair to look like into a reality that also works with the reality of what your hair is actually like — thick, thin, curly, whatever.
plus, the salon is soooo cozy and friendly and i really, really appreciate that they are always willing to educate you on better products and overall haircare, but there is never a high pressure sales situation. i’ve been to so many salons where the stylist will give you a backhanded compliment on your eyebrows or color or something («oh, is this just your natural color? you know what would look sooooo good on you is…») and then try to sell you on that service or a product for it, NO THANKS.
i learned some good tips from the hive and got some good products, but never out of shame or pressure, just stuff that actually really worked for my hair and with what i already had in my daily styling arsenal.
simply the best salon i found in minneapolis, and i went to a lot before ending up here.

This was my first time at The Hive, and it was a great experience! I got a haircut, color change and crown foil from Emily. She took the time to understand what I wanted and also gave me some pointers as well. I’m always hesitant to do anything with my hair because of some bad experiences but I was very pleased with the outcome. Plus the complimentary warm facial towel and scalp massage made the time in the chair even more fun and relaxing. Can’t wait to go back in 8 weeks to get a touch up and cut!

This was by far the best salon experience I have ever had. My stylist (Jen) took time trying to understand exactly what I was looking for, and then was super involved with helping me envision how that would look (holding colors up to my hair and skin, etc). She also explained how they cut curly hair and took the time to explain to me how to care for my curly hair. I never once felt pressured to buy anything at their salon– I felt as though they genuinely care about educating their clients about their hair type. Besides the fabulous experience, my hair could not have turned out better!!! Wow!!! Best curly hair cut I have ever had! I will never go elsewhere!
A few side notes. The warm facial towel along with the scalp massage was enough to almost put me to sleep. They also offered coffee, tea, and water. They sure know how to pamper you!

I was super happy with my experience at The Hive Salon! I usually get 1 haircut/​year out of laziness and because I never really notice a difference after a haircut. I read about the Hive when looking for a salon that does curly hair. It sounded great from the get go and I love that they try to use natural products.
My appointment was with Georgia and she was extremely friendly and helpful even though I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do with my hair. She walked me through everything she was doing (I’m not great with hair care) and why. Without going into too much detail, she did a great job with my hair and I actually feel like I know how to take care of it.
I ended up going back to get the conditioner. With the combination of the awesome haircut and conditioner, my curls are nice and defined with no frizz and I still don’t have to do any styling. I also don’t get a rats nest in the back of my head after sleeping and my hair doesn’t get knotted.
I will definitely go back and go more frequently than 1 year.
Oh, and their online appointment scheduler was super handy as well. I have a tendency to do things really late at night and I was able to schedule my appointment online easily.

I tend to bounce around from salon to salon (stylists, don’t hate me) mostly because I love trying new places and feeling out new neighborhoods. This is the first time in many moons that I have come back to the same place twice.
I was welcomed with tea, and sat back to soak in the most adorable, kitschy (in a cute way) salon I have ever been in. Hardwood floors, antique couches, tiny frames all over the wall… adorable. My stylist listened to what I wanted, gave me some helpful ideas, and went to work. She was knowledgeable, friendly, and did not rush my appointment.
BEST PART — the relaxing aromatherapy eucalyptus towel face wrap as they massage your scalp and wash your hair. It was the best. Just the best. I wish I could go there just for that. I probably could.
I purchased 2 samples of their organic shampoo and conditioner (that I am still stingily using to this day, months later), and I can’t wait to go back!

What a great place!
I started going to The Hive last October. Eric has been cutting my hair since, and he is amazing. He takes the time to ask what I want, offer his suggestions and then explain how he’ll do the cut. Afterwards, he’ll show you again what he did and why it’s beneficial. My hair is super straight and fine, but I always leave looking like I actually have some volume in there!
I have never felt rushed through my appointment, and the other stylists have always been very nice and fun to chat with. The atmosphere is friendly and cozy, and it’s just a comfortable place to be. Prices are extremely reasonable as well!

I went to the Hive yesterday and had my hair cut by Becca, and I am exceptionally happy with the job she did. I have now been to 5 curly hair salons in three different cities (two in New Haven, Connecticut, two in Minneapolis and one in DC) and out of all of these salons I have had the best experience at the Hive.
My last haircut at another salon left my hair basically all one length and very rectangular and so I wanted to go somewhere new. After seeing the great reviews on Unilocal,I decided to try the Hive.
I saw Becca yesterday, I finally feel like I have found the right salon and I plan on only coming back to the Hive in the future. Becca did a great job of shaping my hair in the back, working with my curls to create soft layers and a flattering shape around my face. I have long hair that falls in big curls and waves so it can get very dry and frizzy, but today my hair feels softer than it has felt in years. I am also very happy with the product line they used (I am officially swearing off DevaCurl)
As other reviews have mentioned, the warm towel and scalp massage were very pleasant and the kitschy antique-​themed decorations were charming. The selection of tea and coffee i was offered when I walked in also helped me feel relaxed and welcome. A good ambiance always helps.

I love this salon. I keep going back because the haircuts and bang trims I’ve had here are the best I’ve ever had, and they have grown out so nicely.
The first stylist I had at The Hive was Jen, the owner, who gave me exactly what I wanted, and was clearly very skilled and knowledgeable. More recently, I’ve had my hair cut by Eric, who is also very talented. You can’t go wrong here, all the stylists will do right by you. I stopped in recently just for a bang trim from Emily, and even that was excellent.
Aside from all of their technical skills and the results, I like spending my money at a small, local business. Their shop is so adorable, and I’m sure the site of many cute instagram photos. I am so happy to see this place succeeding, they absolutely deserve it. I highly recommend The Hive to anyone who will listen.

Found them on Unilocal.I am new to the area and wanted a little higher end salon. I coulnd’t afford a stylist recommended to me elsewhere by a friend, and this place had great reviews.
You can schedule online, and other than having to make an account, it makes it very convenient and helpful for both you and the hairdresser. The vibe is homey and the prices are comparable! The massage is the best part if you are going for a cut. My stylist is Becca. You also get bang trimmings inbetween cuts as a complementary service for your loyalty and return.
Parking is on the street.

Shana is an amazing artiste!
I won a certificate to The Hive, when they had donated the gift to a local animal shelter to be used at an auction.
Going to a new salon is always a little scary but I was SO HAPPY afterwards.
The salon uses all organic products which makes me super happy. Also, it’s just cute inside. But the best part was Shana. She’s sweet and gave me a great color and cut. She listened to exactly what I said and then gave me the color and cut I wanted but with the expertise I could never accomplish.
GREAT Experience. Love, love, love Shana.

I think everyone needs to go here.
I have very, very curly hair. Like, borderline old-​lady-​slash-​white-​girl-​afro, so finding a stylist I trust has never been an easy feat. I found my perfect dream stylist while living in Chicago, but needless to say, I can’t fly to Chicago every time I need my hair cut.
So then finding a place to get my hair cut in Minneapolis was always a stressful thing that I hated. I’ve been to more stylists in the past 2.5 years than I’d like to admit.
And then I found Jen at The Hive.
I was apprehensive at first because I knew she did the dry-​cut approach, which I’ve had mixed experiences with. But she assured me that her way was different, and she was right. I loved the cut, and it grew out beautifully (which is NOT typical). When I went in this weekend for my second appointment with her, I loved it all even more.
Plus, scalp massage and relaxing steamed towel? Yes please.
OH AND best part! It’s affordable! At least $ 15 – 20 cheaper than the so-​called «curly experts» I’ve been to before. I am a huge fan.

Jen is the best stylist and hair cutter I’ve ever been to. I feel like a lot of hair dressers are limited to a range of 4 or 5 popular haircuts, and they just do whichever one sounds closest to what you ask for. But Jen seems innately talented and can do anything you want.
She’s also a great stylist. She once whipped my very thick long hair into a beehive and another time braided it into another girls hair. That sounds super weird but it was for a photo shoot and looked great.
In addition to a haircut you’ll love, you also get a relaxing steam towel on your face during a brief but blissful scalp massage. And all this is just $ 50! I have paid twice that for a haircut and walked out with damp hair because the blow dry was extra.
