Specialties

Times have brought change to our business, and we have exited the service of providing retail alterations. We refer that business to other alteration shops, many run by Top Shelf alumni. Our website lists the shops we recommend under Other Services. Alteration services are only offered to clients of Top Shelf custom products on an appointment basis.

Custom suits and custom shirts are our primary business. We carry many of the most famous woolen fabric lines in the world like Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Scabal, Holland and Sherry, and Vitale Barberis. We also carry 100’s of fine cotton shirting from around the world, including the fabrics of Albini, Thomas Mason, Testa, Canclini and other Italian mills.

We design and build modern slim cut suits, as well as more classic styles for the traditional wearer. The process to build a custom suit is pretty straight forward. It starts by making an appointment to select fabric, having measurements taken, and then designing the suit. A typical custom suits starts at around $ 2000.

Our custom shirt selling process gives the customer an education on what looks are most flattering with their initial order. Minimum orders are for four shirts, but new customers can start with a two shirt minimum. Average prices hover between $ 170-$ 200 per shirt.

Accessories include hundreds of unique ties, many in super slim widths, cufflinks, galoshes, umbrellas and aqua shoes, socks, pocket squares, and shoes by Allen Edmonds.

History

Established in 1976.

Two young tailors, John Meegan and Suzanne Murphy, fresh out of tailoring school and green behind the ears focused hard on raising the level of respect for professional tailors in Minneapolis. The business developed over 23 years in Uptown, before purchasing an old funeral home at Lyn Lake with 1901 charm and turned it into the Disneyland of custom tailored suits and shirts. The Arts and Craft décor of the interior are a perfect fit for the creation of hand tailored suits and shirts.

Today the business is still owned and operated by John Meegan and his wife Pat. Both are very active in the local business and neighborhood communities. The outside of Top Shelf is well known for its garden, and in 2012 was awarded Best Business Garden by the Minneapolis Blooming Boulevards.

The highly trained staff at Top Shelf is comprised of tailors from many different cultures, including Iran, Bosnia, Ecuador, and Mexico rounding out the group.

Meet the Business Owner

John M.

Business Owner

I was born in Chicago, and in 1976 moved to Minneapolis after watching the intro to the Mary Tyler Moore show, walking around Lake of the Isles and throwing her hat in the air.

I learned to sew in order to create a radical style of bow ties, then enrolled in the Minneapolis Vo-Tec to be trained by retired master tailors.

Today with my wife Pat we run a classic small business. We have two daughters, both out on their own. Mel is marketing director for Peace Coffee, Katy has her own hand letterpress business in Portland OR, Keegan-Meegan.

I love my neighborhood, my city, my bike trails, my YMCA, and my Lyn Lake business community.

My favorite pastimes are roller blading, live music at places like Bunkers, Icehouse, and the Dakota, and smoking a good cigar.
