History

Established in 1998.

Niwa Design Studio was founded in 1998 by Mark Johnson who chose the name carefully. The word Niwa is Japanese — meaning garden. Although garden design is only a microcosm within the field of landscape architecture, it represents an important level of detail. The word Niwa also provided an opportunity to express our appreciation for Japanese gardens. As for the rest of the name, design is what we do and because we approach every project as a work of art, we like to think of our office as a studio. Thus, the name, Niwa Design Studio, Ltd.

Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

My experience in the field of Landscape Archtitecture began when I started working for Arteka, a large design/​build firm, in my early teens. The owner of the company took me under his wing and over the next several years taught me about plan preperation, design, contracts, etc. We we are still close friends today.

In addition to the help from my friend, the former owner of Arteka, I also worked in Japan. Thanks to Mr. Ohta, VP of Over Seas Operations — PCI, and Mr. Sato, President of Yatomi Zoen, both of whom assisted me a great deal. While in Japan Kanji Nomura also took me under his wign and taught me about Japanese garden Design.

I now have my own design/​build firm where we specialize in «but are not limited to» Japanese Gardens where I strive to be highly creative while reponding to our clients needs and desires.
