The Outlet Store is conveniently located out our warehouse for our online business, so in addition to our Outlet Store inventory, you have access to millions of books from our online inventory.

History

Established in 2002.

We were founded in 2002 by three friends from the University of Notre Dame who started selling textbooks online to earn some money, and ended up forming a pioneering social enterprise — a business with a mission to promote literacy.

I started at Better World Books in August of 2008 in our online Customer Care department. After working some shifts at our retail store in Goshen, I realized how much I loved the retail atmosphere at Better World Books; so when the opportunity to run the Outlet Store arrived, I jumped right on it!

I love working in the Outlet Store and love to talk to customers and help unite or reunite them with new book loves and long lost book loves.

I ordered a used textbook for my son. This company sent the book USPS and while there was a delivery confirmation, my son did not receive the textbook. All this company has done for me is make me chase down the issue with the USPS. They have done nothing to help their customer. I ended up having to spend money on Amazon for the textbook but guess what… he got it in a day… no issues! Guess it means that sometimes it’s better to pay more.
LOUSY CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WILL FALL INTO THIS TRAP AGAIN.

Ordered a warehouse pick-​up because we were going to be in Elkhart the next day. Stopped on way home and found place was closed. Eventually someone did notice us there (two women working in the back saw us and ignored us.) Guy who opened door said they were no longer open on Saturday but their website wasn’t up to date. He looked at orders ready to be shipped and didn’t find our order. Sent them an e-​mail to change from pick-​up to mail as shipment method. Will update this review after I receive the books.
11⁄27: Books arrived 2 days after I changed from «pick-​up» to ship. NO SHIPPING CHARGES! I has always bugged me to buy a $ 1.99 book and pay $ 3.99 S&H. Books were in better condition than advertised. So I’m now an official fan of Better WOrld Books Outlet Store and will recommend it to our «BOOKS on FILM» group now in its 19th year and heading into 150 books read. Better World Books is a great find!

. Great selection — and a percentage of each sale goes to global literacy efforts. Dynamite concept. They do the details, too, which means good customer service and not a lot of extraneous packaging.

I’ve had mixed experiences ordering from Better World Books, but I love visiting their outlet store. There is a very limited selection for browsing, but the real treasure is the ability to look up books that are available in the onsite warehouse. You just look up the books you want at the computer station, view the condition and price, and then write down the titles and ISBNs. A worker then takes your list and pulls the books for you to examine and/​or buy.
Most of the books are reasonably priced, and the condition is fine if not great. While I’ve bought some books that look brand new, most of the ones I’ve gotten are obviously discards from libraries. This isn’t a problem for my needs (I use the books with students), but it could be an issue if you were looking for a pristine copy of a certain book.

As a bookseller I order from other dealers. Experience with Better World has been negative. Books are inadequately described and condition is usually not as advertised. A former employee told me that if a book does not have an ISBN, it goes in the to be pulped bin. Simply entering the isbn makes it easy to get a description of the book but anything before the seventies perishes. What a pity.

We’ve ordered from Better World numerous times and never been disappointed. The condition of the books are exactly as described and sometimes even better. The packing is wonderful. The shipping has never been all that slow for us (the longest taking a week and a half and that was with the free shipping).
We will go back many more times I’m sure.
