The Mission Hospital cafeteria and the food served to patients used to be excellent! I wouldn’t have hesitated to put up Mission’s food… breakfast, lunch, or dinner… in a contest against any other hospital, cafeteria, or restaurant of equal price point. The quality was excellent without exception, the food was flavorful, portion size was perfect, and presentation was quite nice. In short, Mission Hospital enjoyed a longstanding reputation for high quality food. Then, one year ago this month, someone decided to «fix» the one department that was not broken at the hospital. The food has been terrible since then. I have been hospitalized on several occasions over the past year and I can tell you that my family and friends no longer eat at the cafeteria. I no longer eat the food that is delivered to my room. I’m fortunate that I’m able to have meals brought in from the«outside.» Six months ago, I was told by the nutrition manager that they were working on it. Now, after 12 months under the new régime, the quality is still poor, the food is tasteless, and the selection is minimal and often makes no sense. Mission Hospital has lost something special. In fact, I’ve yet to find an employee, many who’ve worked and eaten at the hospital for 20 — 30 years, who doesn’t «brown bag it» now. The word most used to describe the food is «disgusting.» Sadly, I have to agree.

Three stars because I came here at 10am and apparently people don’t eat breakfast nor lunch at this time… Therefore they had no food. There was the usual cereal, yogurt, and cold sandwiches but I was really looking for hash browns, eggs, and bacon kind of breakfast. The servers were also not that nice, they kept looking at me like I was crazy for wanting to eat at 10am. Hopefully this is a one time occurrence and that they aren’t usually like this or else I would feel really bad for the good folks that work in mission hospital. Three stars for good fruit juice, ice cream selection, and the tapatio hot sauce packets.

Funny, I eat here all the time because of work, but I never thought of reviewing this place until my friend, Fia R, was here visiting me and said you should Unilocal on this place :) As far as hospital cafeterias go, this is, by far, the best one I have eaten at, and I have eaten in a lot of hospital cafeterias. There is a good selection of food with a hot food section with three featured entrees of the day, a grill where you can get hamburgers, hot dogs, tuna melts, etc., and there is a grill special of the day, a sandwich bar area where you can get a sandwich made such as a Mission sub, roast beef, tuna, etc, a featured salad of the day, salad bar with fruit, soup bar, pizza by the slice, chips, drink fountains, bottled and canned drinks, Starbucks and Seattle’s Best coffee, cookies, desserts and frozen yogurt station. Some of the things I regularly get here are the tuna melt, mushroom herb ravioli, stuffed cabbage, lentil soup, split pea soup, chipotle cheddar wedges, chile relleno, tilapia and stuffed bell peppers. It is pretty expensive for visitors though(employees get a discount), but quality of food is pretty decent and there is a varied selection of foods available.
