Warbirds Over Monroe is an airshow, held at the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport, that has been going on for at least six years(couldn’t find any definitive information going back further, but they’ve been there for awhile now). Though the airport isn’t the largest — certainly not comparable to Charlotte-Douglas — it is good-sized, and more importantly, they can shut it down for the day so that they can have an airshow, something that can’t happen at a larger, commercial airport. Plenty of planes on hand from the WWII era(and a few from prior to that), as well as a sizable infantry section on hand, including a group of German/Austrian contingent — apparently from the South, based on their accents — along with all sorts of memorabilia, weapons and whatnot. Most are more than happy to speak with you about their interests and hobbies. Presentations throughout the day to honor veterans, as it takes place right around veterans day, and then just about every plane appears to fly(might have been a few that did not, but most did). Also this year at least, there were two helicopters — a Huey and a Cobra — offering rides if you paid the fare. The cobra seemed fun, but it wasn’t cheap. The Huey wasn’t either, but it was more affordable than the cobra. Definitely a fun day out and something different from the usual circuit in the area.
