Montgomery and neighboring Chester county’s hidden gem. You can explore history of one of the only navigable canals in the state; hike, bike, & run some spectacular trails; fish; X Country ski and ice-​skate in winter; or kayak/​canoe the area’s only loop system where you end your trip right where you began… no shuttling! The last Sunday in June is the Schuylkill Canal Association’s annual Canal Day fundraiser, where you and your family can enjoy games, food, kayak demos, Canal Jousting, canal history, and more! Every October is the SCA’s Fall Music fundraiser with many great local bands, food, Sly Fox beer, and more food. Every December is the annual Luminary Displpay where hundreds of candle-​lit luminary bags line the [hopefully] snow-​covered pathway… pure beauty. Don’t miss Santa & Mrs. Claus on their stop at the Locktender’s House!
The Towpath park entrance is across from Produce Junction in Mont Clare — you can see both the canal & trail from the parking lot. The Towpath Park side is home to the Locktender’s House with monthly open house events, restored lock gates with monthly openings, a music stage, and a wide open grass area for all kinds of fun. The other end of the canal is down near the Longford Rd. Dogpark & Fitzwater Station and is a gorgeus tree-​lined oasis of wildlife and recreation.
No bikes or horses allowed on canal path below the Fitz or you’ll incur the relentless wrath of the locals! Please do not litter!
The area is maintained by a passionate group of Schuylkill Canal Association volunteers and they want everyone to love and care for the canal as much as they do.
