What does Russian have to do with BBQ? Exactly. My trip tip sandwich was the worst I had since a gas stations microwave Stewart Sandwich in 1980. When I heard Boris plugging in the Microwave times I wanted to run. My sandwich consisted of a seeded loaf with microwaved beef and sauce nothing else. Couldnt manage more than one bite of this horseflesh. Avoid at all costs, Comrades.

Just a few blocks away from the extra expensive Cannery Row, we lucked into this delightful experience. Now operated by a Russian family who welcome one into the fold — A good name would be – Borscht and Barbecue as it toothsomely combines both within a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. highly recommend this Eatery.

I have tried this place twice and don’t expect to go again. It is a specific type of BBQ and I much prefer Texas style. This time got a 3 meat meal … the ribs were dry, the brisket was fine and the chicken was slightly under cooked. The side dishes were okay but the corn muffin was dry.

Everything is made from scratch and delicious — even their bacon! The owners are very lovely and make you feel right home. Come for the free live music & great atmosphere.

Came for the music and stayed for the food. Both were well worth the trip. The Shrimp E’touffe was perfect, and the Pork Belly BLT was absolutely wonderful. Kenny Cheung was worth listening to. His guitar work was good, his harmonica work was better. Not in love with his repertoire but if you like Jackie Green, then he’s your guy.

3.5– breakfast was good. BF said the pancake«was berry flavorful and had a nice crispy bottom just how I like it». My breakfast sandwich was good, plenty of egg and bacon in a toasty roll, not the greasy mess you might get at a fast food joint or diner. We keep coming to support this family owned business and to avoid crowds at other nearby restaurants. We’ve been here enough times to know that you have to be very patient. The owner(mom) can come off terse but she is hostess, server, bartender, manager and chef all at the same time, most of the time. When she has the help of her son, service is a bit faster. They are all really sweet and believe in fresh quality food.

We went for the music and the BBQ was bonus for my husband and daughter. I had the Reuben which was the worst I’ve ever eaten. They put coleslaw on it rather than sauerkraut and they forgot the cheese. It was sweet, not salty & sour like a Reuben should be. My daughter had the pulled pork, usually her favorite, but the chunks of meat were so large and the BBQ sauce not mixed-in, she ate 2 bites– bread tasted stale. My husband had a pulled chicken and it was the same, not pulled meat at all, large chunks and not enough BBQ sauce. I had beer and it was cool not cold. The reason for 2 stars is that the folks were nice and friendly, otherwise it would be 0 stars. The music was OK, really loud for such a tiny venue, but I would NOT go back for the food. Mediocre to poor experience.

We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw, brisket BBQ plate, cesar salad, and crepes. It took about 30 minutes to get our drinks. The cesar salad was delicious. The pulled pork sandwich was tangy but tasted okay. The cole was too sour. The brisket was drowned in BBQ sauce. The waitress said the crepes were made from scratch and would take one hour so we canceled that order. We had to ask for a fork. The chef/owner got upset when we asked for extra BBQ sauce and a side of bread. She ended giving us some cold bread afterwards. The experience… Well it took 2 hours.

What a dump! I ordered the combo plate and could not eat it. The ribs were overdone, the brisket was tough as leather, my wife says it was old, she said the gumbo had no flavor, the rice and beans were a joke(they did not deliver our friends’ rice and beans for 15 minutes AFTER they served the sandwiches they ordered). $ 5 for coleslaw, are you kidding me? Neither of our dining companions finished their meals. We walked down to Hula’s(622 Lighthouse) and ordered appetizers and had much better food with much better service. Can’t believe this place has stayed in business for a year. If you want BarBQue, drive to Salinas and go to Salinas City BBQ on West Market.

Fresh and hot How tough can it be? Still many excellent restaurants seem to miss the point Here, we had the gumbo and smoked turkey soups The latter is really a turkey vegetable soup Both came out hot, and appeared to be freshly made. The gumbo was worth ordering again The BLT was great. House-made bacon was delicious Pecan pie was another win — served warm — more nuts than filling — so it must be healthy:) Service was slow — they could use an extra person in the front Recommend coming with friends so you can try the different meatsb

Had the combination plate with the brisket, pulled pork and ribs. The sauce was good and the portion was great. Side of coleslaw was good, with vinegar based dressing and roasted vegetables were good also. Friend had the combo also with tri-tip, chicken and sausage with rice&beans and potato salad. Tri-tip and chicken good, the sausage was just there, meh. Potato salad and rice/beans ok, not great. I will go back.

Good musical entertainment. Good smoked salmon. Good vibe as far as décor.(I haven’t tried the barbecue.) Decent selection of beers on tap. After that it goes downhill. The cornbread muffins are pretty good, but dry – they need butter and/or honey to help them go down. None was offered. Service in the dining room varies from slow to nonexistent. It seems that staff are working hard and moving fast, but they don’t have much of a system worked out for dealing with actual customers. People want to feel welcome when they go into a business. If they feel ignored and/or like they’re a burden(especially when they’re repeat customers), they’re less likely to come back. The mac & cheese was less than lukewarm and pretty tasteless – almost like a dull macaroni salad with orange-colored mayo. It was much better when I added some hot sauce, smoked salmon, and fresh, ripe Roma tomato pieces.

Came for breakfast and was NOT disappointed! No wait to get seated which is phenomenal! The food took a little bit longer than at some other places but it was freshly made, not greasy and super delicious. I had a smoked salmon scramble, he had the bene and my friend a breakfast sammie. We were all impressed by the food!

I have been here many times, and if I had to put it all in one word ! Yes come it’s out of this world ! Hmm ok not one word, but they have great dishes and sandwiches, yes home made bacon, friendly staff, and great atmosphere to just have a beer or a drink ! Ok let’s be honest you can’t just have. So were in Monterey. On our anniversary. Always looking for something new too eat. Seen pictures on here and they looked good so i wanted to try it out. The sandwich pic is what got me so we got that. It was big and real good. Cant go to a bbq place and not get bbq. So i got the 3meat meal. Ribs, brisket, and tri tip. Everything was so saucy and lots of flavor. So tender, not tough at all. There sauce had good flavor not just plain old bbq sauce. Mac & cheese was good. Potato was ok. So if your in town i would give this place a try…

The food was decent but I would definitely never come back. The waitress was giving me hell for not wanting slaw on my sandwich and tried talking me into having slaw on my sandwich and even tried to take a friend’s order over mine while I was making the order just to avoid writing«hold the slaw» on the order. During the meal the waitress came back and pointed out just how great my friend’s sandwich was WITH slaw. So irritating. Trademark should be «Bön Ton L’Roy’s, don’t tell us how to make your shit.» Please read your reviews about poor customer service and change your devious ways.

Come here for good BBQ and Russian favorite plates on the weekdays. This is a small establishment run by the family so if you are in a hurry and not willing to have a more relaxed pace meal, find another joint. The BBQ combo plate was absurdly big and was shared easily between 2 people with 2 hearty sides of red beans & rice, cornbread and roasted veggies. We also shared a bowl of gumbo which should be sampled by your whole table. Through the meal 2 different live musicians provided a nice ambiance for a summers night out.
