We have been serving the Monterey Peninsula since 1973. We have 3 optometrists who offer quality comprehensive eye health and vision examinations, and 1 optometrist who has focused her practice exclusively on contact lenses.

We are a provider of VSP, MESC, EyeMed and Medicare.

History

Established in 1973.

Dr. Rick Hattori started Hattori Vision Optometry in 1973 in Monterey where he grew up. His vision was to serve the community through the quality service in optometry. Today, Hattori Vision has Dr. Ellie Hattori, who has focused her practice exclusively on contact lenses including specialty lenses such as CRT, or lenses for the keratkonus patient. Dr. Elizabeth Anderson who has an extensive experience in optometry practice in all ages, and Dr. Covie Gonzales who practices general optometry, as well as licensed to perform lacrimal dilation and irrigation. Dr. Gonzales is also glaucoma certified. Under the supervision of Dr. Rick Hattori, Doctors and staff members thrive to provide the cutting edge technology and continue to have an integrity of the good old world service to each patient.

There are 3 things you need to know about Dr. Hattori’s practice:
1. She has unparalleled diagnostic skills. I’ve had keratoconus, a condition where the cornea bulges into a cone shape, for well over 25 years. When I moved to Monterey some years ago, a colleague recommended her and I went because Ellie indicated an ability to treat my condition. Most doctors are proficient in care options for keratoconus, but Dr. Hattori has been exceptional. She is so experienced and aware of the latest treatments that I continue to fly back from Las Vegas to Monterey — once a year — for my annual eye exams. I’ve tried other doctors — literally nobody else even comes close to her expertise.
2. The staff at Hattori Vision are kind, diligent and masterful. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been assisted by them for scheduling options. You’ll never see anything but world-​class customer service from them.
3. I’ve actually written about bad experiences with eye doctors previously. I can’t think of one single aspect of Hattori Vision that I would change. It’s a convenient location, they provide exceptional service, and the doctors are highly proficient. This is a family-​business and they recognize that each and every patient is important to the success of their operations. What more could a person possibly ask for?
If you are new to the area or simply looking for a more experienced doctor — don’t hesitate. Given them a call and make an appointment. There is nothing more important than your vision.

Ive seen my fair share of optometrists up and down california but wow, this office is the best. What an exceptional crew! You can tell Dr. Gonzales loves his profession! He explains everything in great detail and in the best way, especially if you have weird ass vision like mine. He had me laughing many times throughout the appointment but I left there with so much knowledge. Matt (who doesn’t love this guy?!) helped pick out some great glasses and was focused on fit and style. Absolutely loved his positive energy, his great sense of humor and also his patience because of my indecisiveness but we got there! So all of you that come back to Monterey area to visit family, schedule your annual eye appt here too!

Today was my first eye exam ever and I had it with Dr.Covie. He was so knowledgeable and able to explain my eye functions and vision in a way I was able to comprehend. He made sure I was comfortable throughout the exam, took his time and was able to answer all of my questions. Matt helped me pick out my lenses and was super helpful and awesome. They have a great selection of brands such as Tom ford, Valentino, marc Jacobs and many others! I highly recommend this office, they will take great care of you!

I received excellent care and service from Dr. Gonzales and the staff at Hattori Vision. His exam was thorough, quick and effective. His bedside manner is very relaxed and comfortable, but it is apparent he is laser focused on finding the right prescription. I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. G and the staff.

Dr Covie was outstanding — I walked away feeling valued as a client, confident in my diagnosis and assessment, and very satisfied in the outcome of the service! I went yesterday to get my eyes checked after 5 years. I saw Dr. Covie Gonzales and I have never understood the condition of my eyes better than after he explained them to me! It was so nice to be explained in a non-​dumbed down way exactly why my vision is the way it is (I have astigmatism). I never understood it before. Dr. Covie was very nice and easy to talk to.
Afterward was the fun bit, I got to look at their selection of glasses frames, and I was so happy to see so many fun choices and designer brands! Matt expertly helped me with frame selection and every single pair he tried on me was flattering and fun; he really thinks about the shape of your face and your overall style. I found a super unique pair from Cinzia, and I can’t wait for them to arrive :) Thank you!

Great care and customer service! I had a previous optometrist that had a lot to be desired. I was skeptical at first when I went to this company, but was pleasantly surprised at the care and actual ability to spot my main problem with my eyes. My glasses are clear and the problem with my left eye is being handled. Dr. Gonzales has been outstanding as well as the staff for me and my wife.‘Highly recommended.

The experience was awesome. The personnel are attentive, optometrists know their jobs, the service is very timely with excellent post-​visit customer service. I had an issue regarding payment, yes. However, they went above and beyond to correct it. As is the case with people, businesses also make mistakes. I am still their patient and my whole family get their eye exams there. This place is as good as it gets. I strongly recommend them.

But most of all, everyone in the office is friendly, helpful, and accommodating — always! I always leave the office in a cheery mood. Why would you want to go anywhere else?

My experience at Hattori Vision has been great, so far. The doctor I worked with was knowlegeable and was really easy to talk to. The office staff was very friendly and eager to help. I’m still in process of getting my frames and lenses from them and I hope that goes smoothly. I’m a bit worried after looking at R.F.‘s review. The only problem I had with my appointment was that I had to wait quite a long time between my basic eye tests and then seeing the doctor for the rest of the appointment. I went in for a comprehensive exam at 3:50 and didn’t get out of the office until 5:15. I almost feel asleep in the waiting room in the middle of the appointment.

Office staff are very nice, friendly, however it took a month before I received my new glasses when it was promised in about a week or 2. I kept calling after 2 weeks. 1st excuse was the lab sent the wrong size. 2nd, after still no results, no excuse. They did apologize, however. I was NEVER updated with a courtesy call which would have made all the difference in the world! Uh, communication people.

Dr. Fogg has excellent rapport with patients. He gets five stars for «bedside» manner, communication, attitude, etc. But I don’t like some of the other practices that take place at Hattori. First of all, what kind of medical practice has their door locked 15 minutes before a patient’s appointment? I shouldn’t have to wait out in the elements because you can’t unlock your door a few minutes early. You want people to show up on time for their appts, then treat them with some respect & dignity – not a locked door!
The other thing I don’t like is being immediately taken to the optical (glasses) counter after the exam. I realize this is probably how they make ends meet, but I’d rather let my pupils constrict to their normal size and my brain relax after the exam, rather than making an important – and expensive – decision under duress.

I am giving four stars for the highly professional and personable care I have received from Dr. Barseghian for the past 8 years. I would give her a 5 star rating. She is very knowledgeable and discusses the health of my eyes and vision as an equally intelligent person – not talking down to me. She lets me know the cost of any procedures in advance and gives me an honest appraisal of how important it is. I have complete faith in her expertise.
I took one star off because of the cost of their glasses and lenses. They are really expensive and even though my insurance pays for one free pair every two years it invariably costs quite a bit more unless you want to choose from a very small selection. I recommend going here for your care but taking your prescription and buying the glasses elsewhere.
