Great location, helpful staff, loved the in room fireplace & the modern décor. And funny enough, they make a great omelette in the morning. I’ll be back.

Great location to downtown Monterey. Can walk anywhere downtown. Beds are very comfortable. Upscale hotel/​motel. No AC but weather is very mild here. They have nice fans in rooms and can leave window open (it has a screen). They have lovely hostesses to get you checked in and they serve food & drink in the lobby 5 – 6:30 pm nightly.

Good location. Good value for the price, comfortable room, and I enjoyed the heated pool and hot tub.

Four stars for room/​1 star for onsite bar and restaurant
The room was nice, with a big bed, fireplace and divan near the fireplace and tv. It seemed modern but designed in a Craftsmen-​y way.
We arrived early and the front desk attendant graciously checked us in early, but the room we got was right next to the entrance for the building, and as others have said, the walls are pretty thin. We could hear almost every person entering and exiting the building. Our room was also on ground level, near an entrance to a lower parking lot, so cars revving up the hill to leave early in the morning could be heard. The first night, the people in the room above us clomped across their room a lot. How do I know, because we could hear them.
The real disappointment comes from the bar. In the room, there was a menu for the onsite restaurant and information about the chef who graduated from cooking school and studied under various people. So, we decided to eat at the onsite restaurant because we were tired. As we were waiting to order (there was one server and about four tables), I noticed a couple who were adding salt and pepper to a pizza they just received, the same pizza we had just ordered. They also asked for plates, because they were sharing, and got two real plates. When our pizza arrived, it looked and tasted like a frozen pizza that had not been cooked well, the cheese was melted, but nothing was browned on top, the dough was thick and chewy and really tasted like a frozen pizza. We also asked for plates and got two paper plates. We got a Caesar salad, which had a flavorful dressing, but the lettuce was probably from a bag (every piece of romaine appeared identical) and the croutons were store bought. It seems like a big let down after reading where the chef was trained, etc. I ordered iced tea which came complete with the Lipton tea bag used to brew it at that moment. A lot of the positive reviews are for breakfast and brunch, but we cancelled our plans to eat there the next day.

My husband and I went away for our anniversary and were already spending a lot of money to have someone watch our kids so we could get away for 24 hours. We wanted a hotel that was nice but didn’t break the bank. This place was reasonably priced yet clean and beautiful. We absolutely loved the fireplace. This was a 15 minute walk to fisherman’s wharf and a 30 minute walk to cannery row. We had a great stay! I would give this place more than five stars because I mistakenly booked the hotel for the wrong night (working night shift with 2.5 kids apparently takes a toll on the functionality of your brain). We were about to leave on Saturday for Monterey only to realize that the reservations was for the previous night, Friday night. I called the hotel and they were so accommodating. They fixed the issue, no problem. So we ended up having a stress free stay despite my big boo-​boo!

The staff were wonderful, the grounds are well kept and the room was confortable. Our room was downstairs and to the back, but shaded with a view of some trees.
We were told the pool was heated to 80 degrees. we and another guest highly doubt that claim. But it was warm-​ish and between it the hot tub where quite nice.
Our biggest issue with the room was that it is awfully stuffy and smelt slightly of old shoes. There is no air conditioning so we relied on the window and a provided fan to vent the room and cool it off. I don’t think we’d stay here during the summer time.

What a great hotel! Thoroughly impressed! I travel alot and I have never had the front desk call the room minutes after check in to make sure that the room was great! That really impressed me. Super clean, super comfortable, very modern room. Excellent location to walk to wharf, downtown, pharmacy, grocery etc. The fireplace was super cozy. Will be back!

So despite it being January and 54-​degrees outside, our room is blazingly, uncomfortably hot. The hotel’s only solution? Open a window (the room is located on the ground level) or use a small, plastic fan. When we asked the front desk about this, the employee offered absolutely no respite other than «It’s pretty common around here.» (Which is a pretty funny response to ensuring your hotel’s guests some minimal comfort?) After canceling our room at 7 PM the night of our visit, the employee shook his head and rolled his eyes when he thought we weren’t looking. Now we’re scrambling to find another room for the night. Avoid unless you like saunas. (Or, you know, at the very least, train your front desk employees to simply be nice?)

Decent accommodations in not-​downtown Monterey. Overall nice rooms (with fireplaces) at a really great rate but sort of motel-​y in that there are two buildings and doors open to the open-​air hallway.
Weird interaction with the front desk at 10:30PM, but overall nice, helpful and convenient.

Monterey is an interesting town. Full of fun and not so fun quirks. One of those quirks is this odd predilection of hoteliers in Monterey to fill their rooms with feather beds. I am personally allergic to down, so to find that nearly all of the best hotels in town have down beds and pillows makes my choices rather limited. I also have back problems, so I have to stay in a hotel with a comfortable bed of some kind. I also prefer to not pay an arm and a leg for a place that I am pretty much only going to sleep in. Oh and don’t get me started on exorbitant «resort fees,» or parking fees.
Enter Hotel Abrego. Godsend.
Highpoints:
1) Pillowtop bed. Non down. Very comfortable. Great linens. Made and remade every time I came back at night.
2) Clean. Walls clean. Carpets clean. Metal on sinks and showers clean. Spotless. Ok sure the cleaning staff are probably using industry hacks, but you walk in and it feels inviting. That’s pretty great.
3) There was a table fan in the closet. I sleep with a fan for horrific nausea (yeah, I’m pretty screwed up), and to see a hotel that catered to a whim that I have long stopped asking for was just incredible.
4) Basic queen room is $ 120 or so a night. I stayed December 17 – 20 in 2015, and found a quiet Monterey, which was nice. This room allowed me to go do what I needed to do, come back, get solid rest, go do it again next day.
5) I wish I remembered the name of the check in staff that were on duty when I checked in on Dec 17. They were excellent. Everything was set up, they offered suggestions on things to do, got me on my way. Check out was simple, easy, and no hidden surprises.
Lowpoints:
1) Upstairs neighbor clomped at 2am. Either the ceiling is not that sound treated, or they were doing jumping jacks. Not a deal breaker.
2) Didn’t seem to be air conditioning. I stayed in winter and it was 35 degrees outside. Non issue. The table fan more than made up for it. If you demand air con, or if it’s super hot in summer, then consider that. But you know what, these are good folks who run the place, bring the issue up nicely, and I’m sure they’ll accommodate you somehow.
All in all, if you come to Monterey, stay here.

This is a very cozy hotel. I read a fair amount of complaints about the thin walls, but the walls were not an issue for us. The room is on the larger side, comes with a fireplace, and a well designed bathroom. The rates are competitive with the surrounding hotels, so i would recommend this place. Also, it’s cozy feel makes the room perfect for traveling couples.

I like the heater there, and the room design is just ok. But I can even hear the walking and talking sound from the other side of the wall.

I’ve been to at least 7 different hotels in Monterey and I had to write a review on the Hotel Abrega.
The first time we stayed here we were very pleased, very tasteful clean rooms, nice hot spa, good service at the desk, short walk to town, and great rates.
So we decided to come by again, Garret at the front desk made us feel very welcome and at home as did the his lovely co-​worker
Our room was beyond our expectations with a very nice bathroom, fireplace and furniture. We walked to downtown that evening, had a nice night out and then walked back to our hotel, it was just a great experience.
Couldn’t ask for better service or better location with very very nice rooms.

I love the look and feel of this hotel! It definitely felt homey and cozy!
When I first arrived, I was helped by a guy at the front desk. I believe his name was Patrick, and he’s great! There was a problem with the keys, so he talked about the hotel and local attractions while we waited. Very professional.
In the room, there was a fireplace! We didn’t turn it on since the room was so warm already.
Pros:
–Clean
–Air conditioning
–Fire place
–Location close to downtown
Cons:
–The room got way too hot (heater was not on).
–Walls are VERY thin. Don’t forget to bring all your toiletries!
–My nose itched every time I was in the room. I also got some bug bites in the morning.
The cons themselves are enough of a reason for me to stay away even though I like the look of the hotel.

My wife found this little hotel on
and booked it. I have been to Monterey many many times and never even noticed this place it’s in a very central location its about 4 blocks from the war it’s about 8 to 10 blocks from the Cannery Row and is very central 2 highway 68^th and highway 1. The staff was very friendly the room was spacious and very clean and with the exception of some kids upstairs I were a little noisy it was a perfect stay. I would certainly come back and would recommend it to others we really like the ability to be able to walk pretty much everywhere from the Hotel

This was such a great find!!! Every staff member we encountered were professional and pleasant. When we got to our room we were excited to find that it was super clean, nicely appointed, had a cool little balcony and fireplace. The bathroom area was pretty spiffy too. (It looked like either it was newly remodeled or housekeeping was doing a kick-​ass job since the glass shower door/​walls were spotless and there were absolutely no signs of mold in the grout.) The chaise was fun and the bed was comfy. Then in the morning we got to make coffee on the Keurig coffee maker.
I forgot to mention that in the main lobby they have Happy Hour in the evening and in the morning they set out coffee and biscotti — yum!
All of these amenities came at a really GREAT price too! My husband and I were pretty impressed. Overall, it was a fantastic stay and we’ll definitely be staying here the next time we’re in Monterey! :)

Nothing wrong with the hotel except that it was LOUDDDD. no air conditioner? No problem for this girl, except I love sleeping with the windows open. Only problem was that they just didn’t seem to be mindful on the road way doing construction work or something at 8am.
I can get past that for a generous staff, great accommodations, good prices (on Hotel Tonight) and great location.

One of the girls at the desk recommended a vegan Mexican place for us to eat. If she does this for you don’t go– it gave me boom boom issues for 24 hours. Figured I would spare you a bit.

This is a lovely hotel, conveniently located within walking distance to downtown Monterey, and we would stay here again. However, we were VERY surprised and disappointed that no attempt was made to compensate for the fire and subsequent guest evacuation that happened on the night of August 7, 2015. We mentioned this upon checkout, and were told that «management had authorized a free breakfast» if we wanted it. Perhaps it would have been helpful of this was actually conveyed to the guests… which it was not.

Beware this hotel! They charge $ 25 cancellation fee, even if you cancel MONTHS IN ADVANCE. I recently booked a room for October, but we had to change our plans. Within a few hours of the booking, I had to cancel and I received a message online that I would be charged $ 25 for cancellation. I called the hotel and asked that this charge be waived, as it was not clear in the booking there would be any penalties for cancellation. A front desk person told me she could not do anything, as the charge came from the third party I booked through —

and they told me the hotel charged the fee, but they would request a refund on my behalf, since the cancellation was 11 HOURS after I booked it online. I received an email today that Hotel Abrego will be keeping the money. Really? I have booked many hotels over the years and this is the ONLY one that has done this, even though the booking is over 2 months away and it could easily be rebooked by someone else.
I thought your hotel looked sweet and I was going to book in the future, but you just lost a future customer. Enjoy my money you took for no valid reason.

This hotel was decent but you are mostly paying for its location to the Wharf which I don’t feel was as advertised. I specifically chose this hotel because both the Unilocal reviews and front desk claimed to be within a «short» walking distance to the downtown area. Dont believe the hype! It was not only way too far to walk to downtown but not a particularly walkable part of town either. I tried to go a few blocks and found myself walking uncomfortably alongside some sketchy townspeople and still no where near downtown and then decided to turn around and drive there which took a good 6 minutes or so by car! Then had to pay exorbitant amounts for metered parking.
Once in (Scammery Row) Cannery Row, I soon discovered the area is mostly just a meager tourist trap to bring economic livelihood to an seemingly otherwise desolate and neglected town. There is surprisingly little to see or do compared to what I had read before visiting. Just one row of restaurants and an aquarium really. There is so much more in Carmel I would have rather stayed there.

Sehr schönes Hotel mit sauberen Zimmern und schickem Design. Obwohl an einer grösseren Strasse gelegen am Abend sehr ruhig. Swimming Pool ist schön für Kinder. Frühstück mit frischem Obst ist preisgünstig, für Kinder kostets nur die Hälfte.
Hotel ist rundum zu empfehlen!
