this was hands down my favorite restaurant, and we had many wonderful experiences here, never had a bad experience and have eaten there dozens of times over many years, last night we went by and noticed it was closed down for good. VERYSAD! the food was wonderful and the service was always impeccable! I have nothing but good things to say about SHOGUN! I am very sad to see it go! Many Blessings to the owners and workers there!

This place offers sushi that’s edible, but not outstanding by any measure. The fish seemed pretty standard and the rolls were unimaginative. They offer teppan-taki tables where you can enjoy the show. Overall, the décor is fitting for the cuisine, but this place needs updating to offer a fresher feel. The service was pretty good and they do their best with what they have to work with.

I had to drive home from Mobile to Atlanta in the evening, and decided to take a chance on sushi for dinner outside of Montgomery. Shogun had nice quality sushi, and their weekly $ 1 sushi special featured some nice nigiri and rolls. The bad– the location seems a little run down and you can’t get a decent glass of wine. It was good for just passing through though.

This place seems to have been around for awhile and has probably seen better days. It’s connected to a motel near the interstate and the interior is dingy with low ceilings and uncomfortable barstools. Service is not especially friendly: Eating at the bar once, I had a sleepy looking server with a consumptive-sounding cough that made me fear for both our healths, and other servers have just seemed bored or indifferent. The sushi is fine, although once I ordered a roll that turned out to be deep fried, despite no indication of that on the menu. The hibachi dinners are actually quite good; just the right mix of veggies and fried rice that’s not greasy.

We went looking for sushi/sashimi nearby and found Shogun, which turns out to be one of a chain located in several Alabama cities, Louisville, KY and Kennesaw, GA. Not very pretentious outside or indoors, it is clean and comfortable, at least in the sushi portion(there’s a steakhouse which we didn’t visit). Shogun is located just off East Blvd. on the eastern side of Montgomery, very close to I-85. The menu is typically what you’d expect. We ate a variety of sashimi including salmon(big, fatty, fresh slices), yellowtail(good texture), red snapper(not quite as fresh tasting, maybe, but OK) and yummy tuna rolls and cucumber rolls(both fine if unremarkable). The miso soup was a bit salty for our taste but very nice. The server was well informed, but it took the sushi chef a little longer than we thought necessary given that the restaurant didn’t seem terribly crowded. That said, the fish was just fine when it arrived. Lunch prices for teppanyaki ranges from $ 7-$ 12, and dinner ups the range from about $ 11 – 22. Sushi/sashimi prices vary from $ 3.50 to $ 5 for two pieces. A good dining experience, and we’d eat here again if we happen to be in the area. Don’t think we’d go too far out of our way, however.
