Café on the Green is a small gourmet café in Morristown offering French and European food in a fun, whimsical atmosphere. We combine European old-​world comforts with modern flavors and techniques to bring you a unique twist on the French café. Our playful, storybook-​inspired café is both quirky and inviting, with interesting touches such as scratch-​and-​sniff wallpaper, a toy train circling the ceiling and colorful, eclectic décor. We specialize in bistro food, artisan coffees, tea-​infused lattes, patisserie, bon bons and a selection of old-​fashioned candy.

Come enjoy our delicious selection of classic bistro fare, from soups and salads to paninis, waffles and more. All of our soups, salads, coffees and teas are organic, and we proudly make everything except our bread in-​house. Stop in for one of our daily specials, or call in to have your order delivered. We have a great outdoor patio for you to enjoy your treats in the crisp air, and often host events like art class or live music.

History

Established in 2012.

Run by an energetic team of young entrepreneurs and French culinary graduates, Café on the Green is an exciting new café offering a variety of unique European delights. What started as a dream of gelato soon turned into a unique French-​style café serving a range of unique and interesting foods, drinks and desserts. Our incredible staff has worked hard to create a menu of homemade specialty fare, using the best ingredients available in everything from our artisan coffees to our homemade desserts. We take pride in bringing together the best of old world comforts and modern whimsy to create one-​of-​a-​kind treats. We look forward to making Café on the Green a vibrant part of the Morristown community, and we hope you’ll enjoy our quirky atmosphere of childlike wonder and family fun.

Business Owner

Jon and his wife Vita are a newlywed couple who wanted to create a French-​inspired café with a touch of whimsy. They wanted Café on the Green to represent a fresh perspective on a familiar classic. Jon and Vita first began by undergoing a mentorship with ice cream pioneer Malcolm Stogo, and then strategized with former bandmate Caitlin Monahan on the concept, branding and interior design. The unique viewpoint of each contributor can clearly be seen in the fun, energetic atmosphere of Café on the Green. John, Vita and the entire staff at Café on the Green are excited to become part of the Morristown community, and hope that they will encourage patrons to have some fun with their food.

Nothing special here. Decent lunch spot but slightly overpriced for what you get. 2 panini’s and 2 snapple’s $ 26. Limited outdoor seating and service was friendly but slow. Doubt I’ll return with all of the other options in the area.

Great café, excellent location right off the green. One star off because the food is pricey and is mediocre at best but the venue itself is spacious, comfy couches, ample bathrooms, and not inundated by chatty teenagers like other cafés in the area (coughstarbuckscough). Free wifi plus outdoor seating with umbrellas are a plus. Also glad to support local businesses!

This review is late, as I visited on September 2, 2013.
The setup in this place was really nice. I wondered why there wasn’t someone at the front side to greet me, until I realized that there is a big arrow that points the entering customer to the side where one can order. (The front side looks like a food preparation area.) The lunch I ordered (Croque Monsieur on Ciabatta with Chicken Orze? Soup) was good. I tried to order another cup of soup to go back to the chess tournament with, but it was past 1pm on Labor Day Monday & they ran out of soup. undaunted, I then ordered Gelato & found that to be very tasty! I plan to return next year during the NJ open for Chess.

Met up with a friend for a quick bite here for lunch. I’ve never been to an eatery in Morristown, so this was a new experience for me. Parking was a bit difficult, but I managed to find some good parking around the circle.
This little café is adorable! The interior is very homey. They offer a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads as well as a lot of desserts and gelato. I ordered a ½ soup ½ salad combination and my friend ordered a panini. They sell a line of old-​fashioned soda, so I ordered the ginger ale. It didn’t taste much like ginger ale, but it was still delicious. The food came out quickly. We didn’t even have room for dessert afterwards!
I’m definitely planning on returning here to check out the desserts at a later date. The gelato all looked delicious, they have coffee as well as some pastries and cake. They also sell some loose tea leaves that seemed pretty interesting. There’s a bunch of sample cans where you can smell the tea leaves. I’m planning on purchasing a can or two at a later date.
I’m not sure how the service is when it gets busier, since there were only 2 – 3 other people there, but I definitely think this is a good place to go for a quick bite to eat.

Great Cuban Sandwich. Gelato is awesome. Friendly but young casual staff. reminds me of European Cafes. Fun place on the green.
One gripe: it is a little confusing to serve both pitted and UN-​pitted olives in the same dish.

I’ve gotten food here before, but tonight we had quite a disappointing experience compared to previous times. My colleague ordered the 7 orders our team had over the phone, and the person on the phone gave quite an attitude. She asked if they were 7 separate orders, and my colleague said yes, as they were 7 separate but under one card. The person on the phone was upset that we got it mixed up and was not very accommodating about it.
When we arrived to pick up the order, she did not smile or welcome us. And when we asked for our order, she had to print out 7 receipts for me to sign. I assumed she was having a bad day, so I was trying to be nice about it, but when one of the other employees walked in, she was very smiley and friendly with him.
The food was good, but the service was not. I usually go during the day, and those employees have always been nice, so I guess I would stick to going before 5PM.
I got a salad, and I’ve previously gotten the turkey BLT, both of which are delicious, but the price is a little high compared to other places I’ve gone to.

A friend recommended Café on the Green’s gelato. I stopped by on a sweltering day with plans for gelato and a book. The gelato selection is fantastic — there are many great looking concoctions. I had the Mint Oreo, and it was excellent. Just what I was looking for.
I was pleased to find that Café on the Green has a very cozy, well lit, and well decorated room toward the back, complete with enormous comfy chairs and a sofa. It seemed like the perfect place to read the book I brought with me. Unfortunately, the great gelato and cozy atmosphere were ruined by the horrible music playing overhead. It consisted of obnoxious Top 40 pop music. It was playing so loud that I couldn’t concentrate. Had I been eating a meal or chatting with a friend, I think I would feel the same way.
I hate to frame this whole review around something seemingly minor, but I found it that intolerable. I will still be back for more gelato, but I won’t be hanging around as long as there is loud garbage being played overhead. I am not saying you need the greatest, hippest music; just please get rid of the music I would expect to hear at a frat party, and find some music that matches your otherwise awesome atmosphere.

Stopped in to grab lunch while visiting at Mo’town Memorial. Nice cool friendly feel to the place music playing, varied décor and architecture. The service was friendly and fast. I was in the mood for a good roast beef sandwich. I ordered the 12 hour roast beef on sour dough and it came with choice of chips, salad or soup. I chose the white bean escarole soup. The beef was oh so tender and flavorful. Along with a super creamy horseradish sauce and fontina cheese, perfect compliment to lightly toasted sourdough and just what I was looking to eat. The soup was hearty. It was all very delicious! I will be back here to try the Ruben and other great soup and salad offerings.
I took some macarons to go and the one I ate was pretty good! What a gem of a place!

So the guy behind the counter (not a barista) spoons out some foam from the pitcher and VIOLENTLY flings it onto my soon-​to-​be-​completed cappuccino. I’m not talking about flicking or shaking or wiggling, it was definitely catapulting.
Standing behind the counter with my mouth wide open in shock, I tried to decide if I should say something. I didn’t want to be a coffee snob or THAT annoying customer, but I’m also not a barista. But out of the bajillion capps I’ve had in my life (maybe 3 – 5 a week), I’ve NEVER EVER had someone throw foam into my coffee.
But I felt bad — they seemed understaffed with only two people behind the counter. So I just quietly accepted my capp with the foam cowlick (it wasn’t even level) and tried to enjoy the drink…
Besides that, I would come back to this quirky café for their soups (the tomato one!) and the mango gelato (tasted homemade, super rich). The sandwiches were a bit salty for me and the service is rather apathetic. But mostly, please don’t make any more cappuccinos for me.
PS; they have chess sets and Jenga! and scratch-​n-​sniff wallpaper!

We stopped here and were surprised by the tasteful ambiance of the café. We ordered our food and were very happy with the salads, Panini, and soup. I was especially devoured the macaroons… they were so yummy! We ended up buying more on our way out. What a treat!

Wish I could take away my star. Today was my final visit here. Wanting to get rid of my living social deal instead of letting it expire We went for lunch. Looked at the menu and decided to order one of the nearly $ 10 sandwiches. I decided on the caprese. Oh sorry we don’t have the pesto, waiting on basil. Here we go again. Fine I’ll have the turkey club sandwich, no mayo or sauce or anything. Finish ordering my sandwich, boyfriend starts to order– the guy helping us to go do something else so he hands us over to the girl who finished taking our order. $ 20 for two sandwiches, no drinks.
Sit down and wait for our order. A guy comes over with a different tables order and looks at us blankly. There were two other people in the place how do you go to the wrong table when we have our handy table number !!! Laugh it off and continue to wait. 15 minutes later we get our sandwich, mine covered in mayo. I send it back. The joy of the open kitchen is that I can see and hear everything that was said when my incorrect order went back.
The guy who made it and actually took my order rolled his eyes and looked in my direction. The other guy working, who came by with the wrong food asked what was going on with the sandwich sitting there. First guy explained I wanted it with no mayo. His response, loud enough for me to hear was «the point of a club sandwich is bacon and mayo.» Then looked in my direction and shook his head.
I waited another 10 minutes or so to get my corrected sandwich. Meanwhile my boyfriend was nearly done.
The worst part– the food is good! Was my sandwich worth $ 10– absolutely not but it was good. Mixed greens on the side were well dressed, bread was good.
If they consistently had food, had reasonable prices, served food quickly and without the attitude it could be a great spot.
It is however a place I will never return to. Should have let the living social deal expire.

My friend and I were looking for pies. This place promised pastries and an inviting atmosphere. (And great music.) Let me start off by saying this — This is not a professional high-​end restaurant. This is some guy and his dream, and he hires people who are equally passionate about making little bits of great food to share with people. (Very, very patient and friendly man behind the counter.) The menu is constantly changing, it’s always whatever you see in front of you, meaning it’s always fresh.
I can’t even tell you what I had. One was a big triangle of chocolate upon chocolate. One was a pumpkinny sort of homemade whoopie pie. (I love homemade baked goods.) Then I had a large cup of gelato. The server said he can fit 8 scoops into a small. So with the large, I went crazy on about 12 of the flavors there. Let’s see… butter pecan, red velvet, key lime pie, cayenne dark chocolate (which is FANTASTIC), … I don’t even remember, I threw in every flavor that looked good.
By the way, I hate gelato. I had one spoonful and fell in love. No exaggeration, this is THE only time in my life I have tried gelato and liked it. And then loved it. And now I have to come back here all the time because it’s so delicious. And there are more flavors left to try and they’ll always be changing. I even tried avocado. That’s how you know the owner is passionate about his food. Who else would make avocado gelato? And it even tasted good! (And still tasted like avocados. It shouldn’t be possible.)
I think I’m writing this still on a sugar high. But this place is drop dead five stars. Don’t come in here expecting anything other than what it is, and you can’t possibly be disappointed with the quality and flavor.

Eclectic cute décor in a primo location, this is a good alternative to Starbux down the block. It took a long time to get my mini quiche, which was more just a nibble than a full breakfast, but at least I had my iced coffee in hand while I waited. Coffee was OK – maybe a little weaker than I make mine but OK. I like supporting the little guy but they need to step up the service and food to stay competitive.

My daughter likes the scratch n sniff wall paper… Food is good and the place is comfy but it has a slightly strange smell somehow (not related to the wall paper?). I go there all the time. Another reviewer complained about apparently homeless folks in the starbucks. Please for goodness sake, stop the judgement. People need to have a place to sit with a coffee. Any one of us could be homeless one day. I am going to give starbucks an extra point if they are really acting in a supportive way to folks without expensive homes.
I digress… I like the croque Monsieur, I ordered a latte and it was undrinkable. Stick with regular coffee.

Ate lunch there with two other people. I ordered that croque-​monsieur, and one of my lunchmates ordered the roasted beef panini. The panini came on toasted focaccia with some nice tangy mustard and a big heap of ham. I couldn’t really taste the cheese. For our sides we had vegetable soup, which was homemade with big chunks of veggies, but mine, at least, was lukewarm, which is not very appetizing. The third diner among us had a salad, which she seemed to like.
Total cost for three lunches including drinks was $ 35, which is slightly steep for what it was. Also, the food took about 20 minutes to emerge, which was surprising given that there was only one other food order being prepared ahead of us. There appears to be one cook in the kitchen, with no other help.
The atmosphere in the café is pleasant, and they surely do have some amazing looking desserts and interesting gelato flavors in the display case. I think that perhaps the best thing Café on the Green has going for it, aside from the desserts, is that it is not the Starbucks down the street. Not to be constantly harping on the homeless people in Starbucks, but they really do make that place unpleasant to sip your coffee in!

Gorgeous place to hang out, have some sorbet and get some peace in Morristown.
The location of Café on the Green had been empty for 4 years, with the shadow of a Godiva logo on its marquee until earlier this year. Appearing virtually overnight (or I just missed it, happens), a beautiful French/​chill/​vintage/​hipster café magically appeared.
Describing the place is tough, except for saying that it’s beautiful, very well designed, and just very cool. Lots of little tables, a plethora of outlets, great bar seats, and a darker lounge area in the back, it has to be seen to be believed. Sitting here right now as I write this, I keep picking out additional little touches — it leaves me with a loss for words, which if you know me is not an easy thing.
Beyond having a beautiful design, they offer good drink and food options. Definitely not the place for a full dinner, but great for a lunch, snack or dessert. And a great place to hang out for a cup of coffee, tea, cocoa, or whatever. Good music too, a solid mix of indie-​ish rock at a low volume. Solid for a date or business meeting as well.
Net net, Café on the Green is a solid addition to Motown and a great alternate spot from the standard coffee shop fare.

Had the pleasure of stopping by on grand opening day for lunch. Here’s the scoop — any establish trying to provide fresh and simple food items with a healthy mindset automatically get points for me. I wish more people would appreciate what Café on The Green and others that are trying to do so. I will definitely be coming back. For those who have been, here’s the rundown:
AMBIANCE/​DECOR: Quaint, eclectic, quirky. From the Art Nouveau stools by front entrance, multi-​colored varietal chairs, scratch and sniff wallpaper, cuckoo clock, electric toy train, you definitely get a sense that there’s an appreciation for details not just in décor but food also. The servers are also dressed up in bowties and newsboy hats. I’m a little biased towards anything french influenced so I thought it was a nice touch.
SERVICE: Quick, friendly. Granted this place has you order at the counter, the lady who had given us our food was professional and greeted us with smiles.
FOOD: Tried the THANKSGIVING sandwich on sourdough bread and opted to have the kettle cooked potato chips. My boyfriend had the CROQUE MONSIEUR on focaccia with the side salad. All sandwiches (roughly around $ 9 each) come with your side choice of soup, chips, or mixed green salad. Your choice of breads are either sourdough, rosemary focaccia, or multi-grain.The sandwiches were large without being overly huge and packed. Our sandwiches came out within minutes time, warm, fresh off the press. You could definitely taste the freshness in ingredients. Also, there was equal amount of filling/​meat to bread ratio which I always look for in sandwiches. The sides were generous. The chips were thick and crunchy and the salad was mixed in a nice light vinaigrette.
The gelatos. OMG the gelatos. They must have been over 24 different flavors. If you’re the adventurer type, try the DARK CHOCOLATE CAYENNE. It’s a rich chocolate with a cayenne finish. And don’t underestimate the cayenne! It’ll sneak up on you after a few bites. The CEREAL MILK (with fruit loops) was my favorite! Other flavors include CREME BRULEE, OLIVE OIL, ESPRESSO, CHOCOLATE SORBET, COCONUT, SALTED CARAMEL, VANILLA BEAN, and AMARETTO. All sophisticated flavors, not too sweet, not try to compensate for either flavor or sweetness.
Among the other items on the menu, macarons, cupcakes, marshmallows, cookies, and a breakfast empanada.
My only comment to the business:
I would change the plastic baskets that our sandwiches were served in, to white café plates or at least brown paper serving boats.
