A Kayak Shack

This is the place in Morro Bay to rent kayaks and paddle boards. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Their location is the best in town with easy access to the magnificent dunes across the bay and the inner bay with seals and bird viewing. It is a beautiful location. Betsy fixed us up with quality equipment, gave directions and sent us on our way. Their prices are reasonable too. We’ll be back!

Had a wonderful time on the water, our family of five. Had a guide take us out, one of the kids rode with her. Perfect instructions from the guide, and had a pretty easy day getting around. I would do it again next time we are here.

We really enjoyed our time during our guided tour. This place is located right across the street from the State park were we did our camping. We managed to stay pretty dry and saw some wonderful harbor seals and pelicans up close.

«A Kayak Shack» was fantastic. My wife and I were able to jump in a kayak in less than five minutes of arriving. We called ahead and Trevor told us the best time to head out without battling the tide. Olivia was there when we arrived and was helpful letting us know areas to avoid in the low tide and which way the tide was flowing in the bay. We opted to paddle straight out towards the dunes and we saw peregrine falcons, huge white pelicans, and seals relaxing on the mud flats. We then headed toward Los Osos, saw the Oyster Farm, and circled back easily riding the tide thanks to Olivia’s advice.
We had a great time. Plan on calling ahead to have them advise you what the best time is to paddle in the direction you desire in order to not fight the tide (Los Osos or Morro Bay).

What a great trip we have had with an 7 and 9 year old. Saw seals, cormorants, jumping fish and more on a great hour and half in double kayaks.

Great place to rent a canoe. We were in the water in minutes. Recommend making a reservation for the weekend.

Walked up to the dock with a group of 5 + 1 dog and was in the water in under 5 mins. Rented 3 singles and 1 double yak and everything was in good shape gear wise. Prices were a bit less expenses then the kayak outfitters downtown but it is a bit further from Morro Rock. Right across the street from Morro Bay SP.
The fellow at the dock answered some basic questions about where to paddle and what to expect. He also put the kayaks directly into the water (so you didnt have to lift any boats in the water) and offered a helping hand into your wobbly boat.
Our group had a nice leisure paddle in which we encountered pelicans dive bombing into the water, seals following our boats wake and snow plovers feeding off the strand’s shore banks. We ran into the strand’s bank, hiked around the sand dunes and had a peaceful lunch listening to the beach break.
Great experience overall and I would give this place the 5^th star if they went above and beyond by: giving you some waterproof info sheet regarding local birding/​animal/​morro rock/​power plant beta, fitting you into the boat better (adjusting the foot pegs), making sure the paddles feathered angle is corrected (I had to adjust mind and someone without kayak knowledge might of not known better) and offering some dry bags.
If you have pervious kayak skills, jump into your boat and go.
Never kayaked before, go with a guide or just simply ask homeboy how to paddle /​fit you correctly into your boat and off you go.

The rental here was quick and painless, and once the staff person (who, yes, as noted in other reviews, is incredibly friendly and nice) figured out I knew what I was doing, i got right in the water. I appreciated the fact she discussed local conditions with me and gave me enough information about destinations without inundating me.
The yaks are standard plastic in decent condition. There weren’t extras beyond PFD and paddle (e.g. no maps, water bottle holders, whistles/​mirrors etc.) I had a little water proofing problem with the seal on mine but the staff person helped me fix it.
The prices were excellent — they’re generous with rounding down on hours, and there’s only a one-​hour minimum rental — and for a place to put in that’s close to where you want to paddle, it’s absolutely the best spot in Morro Bay.
The only reason I don’t give this a full five stars is the abbreviated winter hours and the somewhat casual attitude towards the posted business hours (I beat the staff person in by 20 minutes and was just about to leave when she showed), which may simply be the laid-​back atmosphere of the place. And, as a safety geek, I have to fault them for not offering any signalling equipment with the rental or doing an exchange of cell numbers as a precaution for an overdue trip.
Really, in the end, if you know what you’re doing more or less, I doubt you could do better with a simple kayak rental anywhere in terms of value, speed of service, and getting yourself out on the water as soon as possible and back pretty cheaply.

Very good place away from the crowded marina. The young lady at the shack was very friendly and helpful. We had a peaceful time paddling around, no rush, no heavy traffic… The price was good too, $ 14.00/hour for a 4-​adult canoe…

I highly recommend this establishment for kayak rental in Morro Bay. The woman who helped us was super friendly, much friendlier than the dudes at one of the more expensive rental places on the Embarcadero. The price was right too, $ 16/​hour. We paddled around, meandering through the water with no particular destination in mind. It was calm and peaceful out on the water, and my kids, husband, and I had a great time. Although we didn’t see any seals up close, we saw lots of birds and just enjoyed the quiet of being away from the crowds in the shopping district.

Spent 5 days in Morro Bay State Park camping. The kayak shack is located in the State park on the marina right across the campground entrance. You can’t miss it since it looks like a shack and has kayak’s all around it. I still can’t figure out how the business got it’s name.
On one of the days we were there, I decided to treat the kids to a kayaking adventure. We rented a 2 man kayak and I piled the 2 kids in and started heading for the sand spit located about a mile away across beautiful Morro bay. Took us about 40 minutes to get there and we spent an hour exploring, building sandcastles and tumbling down the sand dunes. The kayak shack employee was in her early 20’s and was very nice, personable and polite young woman (and attractive to boot). A very fine representative of the company. Something you don’t see much in today’s younger generation.
We arrived back at the dock after exactly 2 and ½ hours. Since they charge by the hour, I fully expected to pay for a 3 hour tour, a three hour tour, the weather starting getting rough, the mighty ship was tossed… o wait, I digress. Anyways, the fine young lady only charged us for only 2 hours which came out to $ 24. I gave her $ 30 and told her to keep the change. It was much appreciated by me.
I asked the kids if they had fun. They said they had lots and lots of fun. I asked what was the best part? They replied, «We didn’t have to paddle!» Hahahaha you little shits. My arms hurt.
