Visually, spatially, aromatically, this studio has a lot going for it. But often I leave feeling a little less-than. Either a teacher’s zealous pursuit of perfect alignment, or the resource-use propaganda in the bathroom, something finds a way to teach me a lesson. Perhaps I should thank them for those lessons, but it was not what I wanted at the time of purchase.

The hubs and I went to four classes in our week-long stay in Charleston. All were challenging in just the right ways and all slightly different. We went to both the downtown studio and the Mt. Pleasant studio — I encourage you to try both. The vibe is wonderful at both, but each have their own personality. The owners bring in some great outside teachers and are both fabulous in their own right.

This yoga school is unparalleled! The teachers are skilled, highly trained and passionate about yoga. If you have the chance, try a class with Jeffrey or Andrea(the owners). They are both so knowledgeable, friendly, and warm and teach the best yoga classes I have ever taken. The open level classes always incorporate a spiritual teaching, meditation, and a rigorous asana practice that gets your heart pumping! Plus, they play the harmonium which is amazing. Inversions are always incorporated into class and they actually teach you how to do them, like where exactly to begin if you have never tried to stand on your head before :-) If you make a commitment to go to class regularly, you will become more flexible, stronger, and will eventually do a headstand! They have a great boutique with yoga clothes, a great selection of books and other items like mala bead necklaces and lotion that smells amazing. If you really want to treat yourself or a friend, get an in-class private — a teacher gives you hand-on assists throughout an entire class and it ends with a cosmic savasana massage! If you are new to yoga or looking for a deeper understanding of the basics, check out the Basics classes. They build up a lot of the foundational postures and give detailed alignment instruction and show you how to use props and make adjustments as needed. Plus, they explain things like what ujjayi breath is, what the mula bandha is, and why chant Om in yoga class. You will learn a lot! The Open classes are amazing, they will rock your world. And, if you are short on time, try one of the Spiritual Warrior classes. All that said, perhaps the best part of going here is the community. It is a real community. They do things together like have potlucks and holiday get-togethers. You’ll probably make some new friends! It’s a home away from home!

I was looking for Iyengar Yoga in Charleston, and after not finding anything but heated vinyasa classes, decided to try something different. As a yoga studio owner for the last 15 years, I have very high expectations. I was pleasantly surprised to take a very nice class with Andrea, one of the owners. Although some of her adjustments were not at the Iyengar level, they were safe, compared to what I saw in other studios in Charleston. After taking Jeffrey’s class, however, I was blown away. He was very inspiring, and I was pleasantly surprised when he taught some poses using props properly(most non-Iyengar yoga teachers don’t always use props the right way). The adjustments he gave were safe, and mindful, and he made sure to adjust students on both sides of their bodies, which not all teachers do. I only wished the timings in the inversions were longer, but for that, I do my own practice at home. Loved the energy of the studio, loved that they darken the studio for the final relaxation, and absolutely adored the chants with the harmonium. My soul was vibrating with joy.
