Ah Steak ‘n Shake, I still remember going to the zoning meeting for the village to protest to opening of a 24 hour restaurant. It was really going to bring the neighborhood down. Or so we thought. How wrong we were! The food here is what I grew up with. I love the shakes, love the skinny little fries, love all the burgers. Our last visit here was with a family driving an RV across the country that wanted a place to dine with three kids. We had the perfect choice! The service here has always been fine to me. These people usually work very hard, taking care of the drive-thru and carry out business alone is a chore. This is a great place to take little kids for a waiter-service experience. They are not going to hurt the ambiance or make noise inappropriate to the venue. Just don’t come in here in a real hurry. They can be slow at times. They serve breakfast!

Food is inexpensive and quality of food was ok. Service was very slow. Dining room was clean though and manager was friendly.

Slow slow slow slow. Waited awkwardly to be seated then finally asked the cook if it was okay to sit wherever. We took the menus to a booth and was greeted by a woman 5 or so minutes later. We ordered shakes right away and our meals shortly after. Shakes took 20 minutes and our food took 45. There were 2 of us, I ordered 2 sliders and my boyfriend ordered a meal with no modifications. There were 4 or so other groups in the restaurant but regardless our food and drinks should have never taken so long. Also they dropped our check before the food even came which I found to be strange. Then when the food came came it was cold, definitely not worth the wait. What made it worse was no one asked if everything was okay, if the food tasted good, nothing. They probably could tell we were irritated and wanted to avoid us. We will never be back, ever. I would rather starve then go there again.

Went from 3 stars to 1 during our visit. Food was cold. Coffee cold. Never offered a refill. They don’t put the peppers on the table any longer. I didn’t know they were still available but it wouldn’t matter since our server doesn’t have time to check on us. I saw her 3 times go to another table nearby and completely ignore us. And to add insult to injury her nametag said«service trainer.»

Been here quite a few times now. Food is as good as you would expect from a steak and shake. Service is meh. Most of the people working there seem to be high schoolers or 20-something’s. I did although have one waitress who was great. I wish I could remember her name. Anyway, this place is decent and cheap. I recommend it.

Went here today for lunch. I really needed a milkshake today and this sounded good. Well. Big mistake going there thinking that I could just grab an order to-go and be on my way back to work. Service was atrocious. We went inside and ordered. Took almost five minutes to get someone to acknowledge our presence. Then a girl came and took my co-worker’s order(incorrectly I might add — rang her up for additional fries instead of up charging her for the fries that came with the burger). Then she said someone would be right over to take payment. And instead of asking me if I wanted anything, she just wandered off. She was over at the drink machine, poured herself a drink and just stood there sipping it. Didn’t even bother making eye contact anymore. A third patron who was ready to pay was behind us in line. She finally got someone else to take her payment. And then this guy was about to just walk away also before I stopped him and asked him if I could order. Bear in mind that I get 30 minutes for lunch and I’m already at 20 minutes just waiting to even place my order. I finally order, my coworker then pays for her meal and we wait. Food comes out in a somewhat timely fashion(I’m at 30 minutes at this point). Have to eat at my desk. Fries were okay. The bread on the patty melt was far from properly toasted(no crunch, just soggy rye bread). My shake was good, so there’s that. One star for the shake, one star for my coworker’s burger which was better than my patty melt. That’s it. If you’re gonna eat here, you’d better be eating in or ordering online/drive-thru. If this place didn’t have milkshakes, I woulda gone to Five Guys instead. Probably should have gone there anyway.

Terrible experience. Lazy employees. Starts at the top! We will never return to such incompetence. Food is inconsistent. Good one time awful next time. Shakes too thin or too thick. Some time no taste at all.

Service was okay. The milkshake was super milky and now really thick and creamy. The burgers were ok but you get what you pay for. Quick service and clean and the staff is polite and patient.

The place was at capacity. Took 25 min for our food to arrive. They need more staff at this busy location.

My brother and I decided to grab a quick breakfast before we get our Braveheart on at the Scottish Highland Games. It might be the blue face paint and the warrior roar that is scaring the wait staff but they are terrible! Our waitress brings over our cutlery covered in some crusty substance. She brings coffee over, spills some on the table, looks at it, looks at me and walks away. The coffee is old and gross. To top it off, there were egg shells in my over medium eggs. At least they didn’t screw up the toast and the bacon. This place is only for the bravest of hearts and stomachs. If you can eat Hagus, you’ll be ok here, but any other constitution stay away and go to York for a proper breakfast.

We would have gone through the drive-thru but the line was long so we walked in. We just wanted a Jr. Shake and small fries. The girl with purple streak hair at the counter was rude that she couldn’t be bothered to smile or greet us. Even when we asked about latest shake flavors, she was pissed to answer that she just put flip book on the counter. Priority went to the drive-thru and we were left waiting for an unreasonable time for both items and when the fries were finally ready, the staff wasn’t even sure who it was for. We won’t be back… not even for ‘Happier Hour’.

It’s a standard Steak n Shake. Food was alright but I usually stick with a shake. The place has a stickiness about it, from the floors and sometimes the tables. There always seems to be a group of high school kids hanging out there, if you bring younger children beware of some foul language. I’m not even mad, not long ago we were all punk teenagers.

We dined in for lunch. Great burger! Cooked well done as requested. I got the bacon lover’s but they skimped big time on the bacon! I wouldn’t order that again. My fries were HORRIBLE. Greasy & room temp. Won’t order those again either. We dined in & service was AWESOME. seated promptly & courteously. I’ll definitely be back for lunch soon.

The last 2 times I’ve gone here the food has been poor quality. The bread was dry on the burger and the fries weren’t crunchy… I give it 2 stars because the shakes are excellent.

We were seated almost immediately upon arrival. Our booth was clean, as well as the rest of the restaurant. Bathrooms were tidy as well. Server came by right after we were seated. Nice young courteous kid took care of us. He wasn’t pushy or in a rush to get us in and out. Our food came out just mint yea after we ordered, very fast service. I had a frisco melt with bacon. Not sure it was worth $ 1 to add bacon, but it tasted great. The fries are a staple at steak’n shake, tiny crispy fries. All together a good experience, kids will love this place. As will parents with there cheap meals.

Not a bad place. Great burgers, fries, and shakes. I tried the baked beans and they were super tasty, cooked perfectly. Food came out super quick and we were seated right away. One thing is that I wish they put more cheese on my cheese fries. The shake menu is intense, so nice to have such a large variety. We ordered a snickers shake! Yummy!

Walked in for a quick bite on a Wednesday evening– upon walking in, a staff member was yelling at another stag member in the parking lot. Then when we went in every staff member looked up at us and then went back to doing whatever they were previously attending to. We waited for a ‘hello’ or a ‘be right with you’ for about 3 minutes before we left. Terrible customer service.

Someone said this was part of the experience. I wonder if they were just saying this because they wanted me to try what every chicagan grew up with. I feel bad for you guys man. Although wow, the price can’t be beat. A full meal for under $ 4 is definitely a feat. But the patty was dry, and there was a random crunch in it. The waitstaff is super nice and polite and i LOVED my junior milkshake. But at the end of the day, womp, womp, wommmmp. Good for big groups though.

New menu items make this a better option than it used to be. With the new«20 for Under $ 4», its very competitive with walk-up fast food. The waitstaff is very nice, but they get overwhelmed by the crowd at peak times — like a Saturday early afternoon. Try the foot long hot dog Chicago Style for an unexpected treat.
