History

Established in 1973.

The Skagit Valley Food Co-op started as a buyers club in the basement of a downtown church in 1973. We’ve been working with some of our local farmers, like Glen Johnson from Motherflight Farm, since the very beginning.

We grew and outgrew a few spaces, and bought the Co-op Building in downtown Mount Vernon in 2005. The Co-op has over 12,000 active member-owners who contribute to the working capital of the business. We began to offer Patronage Refunds this year.

Our Deli consistently wins people’s choice awards for best health food and vegetarian restaurant in Skagit County. We recently remodeled our kitchen and Deli offerings now include Co-op-made ice cream, a juice and smoothie bar, an expanded bakery and hot entrée bar. Our meat and cheese departments are growing too — we’ve added a cheese island and meat case space, and are now making Co-op Awesome Sausages in six varieties, and chub so you can make your own at home.

At the Co-op, I like to…

encourage member-owner relations;

give out free organic ice-cream;

educate the community on how to eat well on a budget

connect with other natural food suppliers and producers; and…

wander through farms and meet with local farmers.
