History

Established in 1961.

The Mountain View — Los Altos Union High School District has a long history of supporting classes for adults. In the 1930s, night classes in citizenship and English as a Second Language were organized for adults in local church basements. In 1942, the scope of the adult education curriculum was broadened to include civics, literacy, vocational training, health, homemaking, and technical and general education. In 1961, the Adult School was established by the district.

In July 1992 the MVLA Adult School moved into a new building at 333 Moffett Boulevard. In 2008 – 2009, the Adult School registered nearly 11,000 students in over 150 classes at 16 different locations in Los Altos and Mountain View. After major state budget cuts in 2009, the Adult School reorganized its core subjects and reduced its non-core services.

In March 2011 the Adult School was formally reviewed by a visiting team from WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and received a clear 6-year accreditation.
