Creative Dramatics

Exploring and developing our creative selves is one of the most important parts of development. With this in mind, Windsor Academy developed a Creative Dramatics curriculum. We begin by playing imagination games in circle time: imagining that a simple cardboard box is really a hat or a refrigerator or a car. Then we take the children to a professional theatre production, where they see an on-stage production of stories we’ve been reading at school. Inspired, the children then come back to school and choose a mini-musical they’d like to perform. They create their own sets, costumes, and props and then present their very own theatre production to their parent’s right here at Windsor, giving them a chance to express their inner creativity.

Health, Safety, and Nutrition

Being healthy, safe, and well fed is a critical factor in the development of a child. Windsor likes to give its students authentic, hands on learning experiences by inviting real health care professionals, like ER doctors, physical therapists, and optometrists, to talk to the class about how they can stay healthy as they grow. We also have fire engines and ambulances visit Windsor, and the children get a chance to see and explore them. These experiences aren’t just fun; they also help teach the kid’s things that will keep them safe and healthy into adulthood.

History

Established in 2007.

Whole-Child Development

Learning is not limited to reading, writing, and other academics. We respect the child as a «whole» human being and we emphasize creative, social, emotional, and physical development. Each domain of development is equally important.

Emergent, Play-based Curriculum

Unlike traditional, teacher-directed classrooms, we empower children to influence curriculum topics. We teach the children, not the subject. Learning in an emotional act. The brain wants meaning. Therefore, learning must take place through meaningful experiences.

A Nurturing Learning Environment

Children thrive in an environment that feels small, personal, and home-like. In our friendly space, children are nurtured as they would be in their own homes. School feels more like an extended family, everyone learning and growing together.

Shanam — Director

Shanam studied Developmental Neuroscience in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Berkeley. She studied the effects of stress from social influences on the brain development of children during the first five years of life. After realizing she would have a larger impact working with children directly, she decided to earn her Early Childhood credentials and found Windsor Preschool Academy rather than stay in academia. You’ll often find her in the classroom with the children she loves.

She received Sunnyvale’s «Businessperson of the Year Award» in 2013 and is currently serving on the Childcare Staff Advisory Committee.
