M & M Cyclery

Since I decided to get back to riding my «old» Giant mountain bike, I needed to have it dusted off, cleaned, and brought up to date with a lot of broken parts. This is where I used Unilocal to find something relatively close to me. M & M Cyclery popped up and I opted to drive in there since I passed this spot a few times.
Right off the bat, I was welcomed into the shop as someone greeted me at the door and held it open. The staff inside was openly happy to have a customer and welcomed me inside. The bike is pretty darn old (probably 25 years) and there were some old school parts on it that the staff commented on. This was in a good way mind you. Right away I was asked what I needed done and I explained everything that I needed to get this bike back on the road. I had new tires, tubes, derailleurs, brake pads, and shifting lever replaced. The turnaround was quite unexpected and I couldn’t believe just how fast they did all of the work!
I will always come back here for a few things:
— Top notch customer service!
— Fast turnaround on repairs
— Prices are great
— Ease of parking
I’ve already brought my wife’s bike in for repairs to hers and of course, I got the same stellar service!

Very friendly bike store and incredibly knowledgeable. I am very picky about who works on my bike and their mechanics are top notch and always have my bike race ready. My entire family has bought bikes here since the service is so good.

This store has the best service and product offering. What really makes the experience is all the people who work there. They are friendly and very knowledgeable people. I have taken my bike there many times and always received top notch service.

Concur all the bad reviews out there. Let me say this — I am better off replacing the bike rather than spending at M&M. I love to support mom and pop stores, but when a chain charges 10 bucks for flat repair, and mom and pop charges 25, my support stops over there.

I went to this shop today to get some advice on a kids bicycle tire that had a Dutch valve that needed to be inflated. I was referred to Steve (the manager) who spent 4 seconds looking at it and determined that he had no idea how to inflate it. In retrospect I should have just YouTubed it. I found that all I needed was a presta adapter to allow air in. I would have thought that a shop that specializes in bikes would have been able to offer this solution instead the manager seemed bothered by such a small sales opportunity and did not take anytime to have a meaningful conversation with me and my three year old son. When my two sons need bikes over the next 15 years I will not take the time to give this shop my business.

I bought my bike here a few years ago. Recently I brought it in and they said I need a new rim and couldn’t be repaired, at the cost of a 100 bucks. I mentioned it to a girl I work with and she suggested to look on craigs list for repairing the bike I found a guy in Bativia that repaired it for 12.00 bucks. Also just to add he said he could refurbish my old schwinn ten speed for around 45.00 bucks vs. 200.00 at m&m and could meet him in Arlington heights so I don’t have to make the drive. I’m disappointed in M and M thought they were honest but apparently not.

I bought a 2014 Cannondale CAAD X 7 Sora from this shop.
After trying to ride it (once the weather cleared up), I discovered the following issues with the bike:
— The rear dérailleur cable wasn’t in the housing running under the bottom bracket
— The handlebars are not aligned with front tire
— The handlebars are not centered on the stem
— The high & low limits are not set on the front dérailleur, so I now have chain scratches in the paint
— The rear dérailleur is not indexing properly
These are some pretty glaring issues that should have been caught before the bike was ever allowed to leave the shop.
I called M&M to explain what had happened. The gentleman I spoke to, who claimed to be the manager, was wholly unapologetic and asked me what I wanted him to do about it. There was no empathy or sympathy. There a no positive customer service. There was simple indifference.
At this point, I don’t trust them to repair the bike. The reviews here tell me I likely won’t get it back for weeks if I do bring it to them, and even then I’m not sure I should trust their work. I won’t be spending any more money there. I really wish I had read the reviews here before I walked in that shop.
Buyers beware.

It’s As Easy As Riding A Bike
M & M is a small hometown bike shop that I have been using for many years. With a huge variety of bikes to choose from, you can literally walk in and walk out with a brand new bike.
Although I never purchased a bike here, I have been using M & M for bike repairs and tune ups. If you don’t have the time or you don’t have the ability to perform your own repairs, then this is the pace to bring your bike.
I have an older Schwinn mountain bike that has been hanging from the ceiling in my garage for a few years collecting dust. One day I decided to pull it down and clean it up. I filled the tires with air and washed off the dust and took it for a ride. After a trip around the block I realized how crazy out of shape I am in. I wanted to see if the air held in the tires, they didn’t. So I decided to take my bike in to M & M. I could have just purchased a new bike but my bike is still in pretty good condition and besides all it needed was new tires. I brought it in to the shop and left it there for a couple weeks while they replaced the tires and tuned it up.
After a couple of weeks, I received a text page and an email from them saying that my bike is ready to be picked up. How cool is that!
The bottom line is that it was a great experience along with great service and I am glad that I have this bike shop in the area to choose from for my biking needs. Now I just need to get my fat @$$ on the bike and get back in shape.

DO NOT GO HERE! I took my bike here to see if i could get some new rims and tires put on it and got treated like crap. I found the employee to be arrogant and not helpful… i never expected such treatment from some one that works at a bike shop. Yeah i have an old schwinn from the 70’s but maybe it has some sentimental value. SCREW YOU M & M CYCLER YOU SUCK!!!

Great service. Always fair and honest. I have bought five (5) bikes from M&M in three different locations! Have them maintained and service here, too. With 10 year old son, I am here more often then I would like but I always feel well treated.

Back when I lived in the suburbs, M & M cyclery was my local bike shop. Conveniently located down the street, it served my biking needs for a couple years of daily commuting. I purchased two bikes and got several tuneups over the years here. It’s a family run business and the staff are friendly. And the owner is supposed to be some kind of whiz with fixing badly damaged bikes.
Despite all this, the salespeople (which in my experience were mostly family of the owner) are pretty clueless. I was a complete biking newbie at the time and didn’t realize this until a couple of years later. I’m still no expert, but I at least grasp the fundamentals and have even taught some experienced guys a thing or two.
For example, I was sold a bike that was severely undersized on me (50″ for a 6’1″ guy) — it should have been an obvious hint when the mechanic had to raise my seat almost to max seat post height just so I could sit somewhat comfortably on my bike. There really is no excuse for this — it’s not hard to give even the most basic sizing advice.
Another example is when the mechanics kept giving me tire tubes for my trek hybrid with a presta valve that stuck like 2″ out of my wheel. No wonder I kept busting tubes when trying to pump them up! At the time, I thought this was just how they came.
Also, tuneups took a very long time. Well over a week to get my bike returned after a basic tune up. In the city, I’ve never had to wait more than a couple of days to get my bike back.
So overall, the staff is friendly and they are more than willing to take your money. The only person that seemed to know anything was the owner. This is not a good shop for the bike noob — you are not going to learn very much and you will likely end up with something that is not good for you. If you really need to go here, I suggest asking only the owner for advice — otherwise, bring someone who knows something about bikes or do your own research beforehand.

After months of riding my bike around in dire need of a tune up, but never having time on my days off to take it to a shop closer to home (I live in the city), I managed to stumble upon M & M in Mundelein, just two minutes down the street from where I work.
Checking their website I saw they offered a deluxe tune-​up for a reasonable $ 89 (I know the guy on the lake is half that, but my time is so tight), so without many other alternatives, I loaded my bike into my car and brought it with me to work one day.
When I dropped it off, the employee put it up on a rack and gave it a once over, quickly identifying several of the problems I was having, without me even telling him what was wrong. This put me at ease, knowing my bike was in the good hands of pretty knowledgeable people.
He quoted me the published price without trying to push extra parts or services on me, saying at most I’d need to replace my cables at a whopping $ 6 or so. He wrote up a ticket and I was off to lunch.
Now, the only drawback was I dropped my bike off on a Thursday afternoon, and it wasn’t ready until the following Wednesday. That’s a bit long, in my opinion, but to be fair, it IS the height of the riding season and he was very up front that it would take that long, so really, it didn’t bother me much at all. It’s my fault for not getting it serviced over the winter.
When I did pick my bike up the following week, another employee gave me a complete run down of what was done. No additional parts or services were charged, and I walked out with a fairly well cleaned bike for the originally quoted price. After a quick ride around the lot, I was satisfied that all of the problems I had been having were completely resolved.
I was very satisfied with the entire process and the convenience of being able to drop it off without having to shuffle my work schedule around. I think I’m going to keep this place in mind for when I need to replace accessories and get work done, from now on.
Overall, the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and the store was very bright and SPACIOUS. So many bike stores in the city are jam packed with bikes. Well, this place is jam packed with bikes, as well, but in a space easily 3 – 4 times as large as all but Village Cycle in the city. The shop is in a small strip mall, so parking directly in front of the door is ample.
All us reverse commuters (oh, and people living in the area, too!) should keep M & M in mind for service without giving up your weekends.
