History

Established in 1941.

The HSCA began in 1941 with a group of citizens, including founder Miss Evelyn Sweitzer, who were unhappy with the conditions in which dogs were kept at the local pound. A three car garage purchased for $ 412.41 in October of 1941 and placed on a plot of land purchased on Columbia Avenue in Hammond.

The HSCA grew over the years and more adjoining land was purchased. A new brick structure was built in 1951 to serve as the main building of the shelter and various garages and portable rooms were added through 1971. The staff and Board of Directors did what they could to maintain the building, but by the 1990’s it became apparent that the HSCA had outgrown the cramped, crumbling building.

In August of 2001, after an outpouring of support from the community, the HSCA opened at new building on 45th Street in Munster. Volunteers, staff, and various member of the community labored long and hard to make this dream a reality.
