At Ironstone, we’re known for our hospitality. Inside the Tasting Room and Delicatessen, our friendly staff is always happy to explain the origins and characteristics of each grape variety when you visit us for a sampling of our award-​winning wines.

Gourmet sandwiches, hot daily specials, salads, and home-​made desserts await you in our Delicatessen. Dine alongside the 42-​foot tall fireplace or on one of the patios that overlook our famous gardens.

History

Established in 1988.

Ironstone Vineyards started in the hands of John Kautz, a young row crop farmer from Lodi who saw the future in growing wine grapes in Lodi. With just 12 acres in 1948, John quickly built an excellent reputation as a premium wine grape supplier, amassing over 7,000 acres of grapes in Lodi and the Sierra Foothills and eventually becoming one of the top ten wine grape growers in California.

In 1988, John, his wife Gail and their children dedicated themselves to the creation of a wine of their own. While still maintaining grape sales to top wineries around the world, they brought award-​winning winemaker Steve Millier aboard to launch Kautz wines, which would evolve into Ironstone Vineyards, a wine brand dedicated to the production of exceptional wines of unparalleled quality, outstanding value and everyday approachability.

The next big step for Ironstone was the creation of a «homesite,» a winery and visitors center that would exemplify the Kautz family commitment to excellence,

Business Owner

If a winery produces good wine, it is an attribute. If a winery produces great wine, while setting a standard for gracious living and superb hospitality, then it is a gift for all to enjoy. Stephen Kautz, President of Kautz Family Vineyards, sets the tone for Ironstone Wines and the Sierra Foothills Lifestyle.

Born in the fertile, farming community of Lodi, CA, Stephen was raised as a third generation farmer. He is astutely familiar with California’s agricultural bounty. With fresh vegetables and fruit literally dropping from trees to table, and childhood hobbies enjoying the great outdoors, Stephen began to formulate his adult impassioned appreciation of food, wine, and recreation. Graduating from the California Agricultural Leadership Program proved his early leadership skills and drive for excellence.

Stephen runs this 500,000 case per year winery. While the winery has many intriguing facets, Stephen’s main focus is on his product, consistently producing quality, reasonably priced

We had our wedding at Ironstone this past Friday and had the most magical night! Aside from the beautiful grounds and perfect weather everything was great. Callie was our coordinator and was so easy and fun to work with. We are not local so communication was super important and Callie always emailed back quickly. A few of our vendors (band, DJ, and photographer) had never been to the venue before the wedding and they also said that everything went smooth. Everyone that worked there was extremely helpful and lovely. If anything went wrong during the wedding i had no idea :) We had such an amazing night and would recommend everyone get married here!

Riding your bike from town to the winery is a 10 minute beautiful ride along the countryside if you’re looking to be somewhat active. After looking through the museum and the giant chunk of gold in the vault, you can wine taste, eat and sit down in the various indoor and outdoor seating areas around the property and enjoy the beauty. If you have kids, you can bring them to pan for gold. It has been a tradition to bike to the winery for me and family and it’s a place I highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Used this winery for my wedding a couple weekends ago and i wish i could give a better review. The venue itself was absolutely beautiful and we had some amazing locations for pictures, ceremony, and reception. The coordinator we were given (which wasn’t the original coordinator we signed up with) wasn’t very professional with dealing with all the problems she was having with lack of communication with the previous coordinator. The day before the wedding she left me with overwhelming last minute decisions that i wasn’t ready to deal with thinking that everything was already taken care of. At that point i was drained and overwhelmed with everything i gave her the okay to do whatever she recommended but not thinking about till after i cried the whole way home wishing she wouldve told me she had no notes months before. My mother was upset that the things we paid for weren’t being taken care of in the way we wanted so she tried to work it out but it turned into a huge mess on the DAY of my wedding. Not only was it unprofessional to stress the mother of the bride out but then there was a continued problem of not knowing things which she was asking me during my pictures. I still had the best day of my life but wish this could’ve been handled better and especially that she never apologized to my mother and just didn’t speak to her until she wanted money. Some head person called my mom but really didn’t make it better after the fact where they should’ve been apologizing to me the bride and my husband. Luckily only the bridal party and immediate family knew of this drama and everyone else had a blast which is why it is 3 stars. hope other wedding parties beware. Make sure everything is handled ahead of time.

What a disaster the Mothers Day Brunch was. Probably 200+ people with just a few very untrained teenager servers. Poor kids were really trying but not near enough help or NO apparent supervision from management. 30 minutes after we arrived we received our first course and the poor kid serving us dumped his croissant in my friends lap. After 90 minutes and no main course (Eggs Benedict) we got up and left. One table near us that did receive the main course sent it back TWICE because it was to cold.
My biggest disappointment was that NO ONE FROM IRONSTONE WAS AVAILABLE TO HELP MAKE THINGS BETTER. Can’t imagine what it was like after we left as we were the first to leave. What a cluster ******. Giving them one star cause I can’t give them any less.

Gorgeous venue, great location for a wedding. Wine cave is truly unique for a reception dinner.
If they could add a clothes hook to the bridal suite for the bridal gown and bridesmaid dresses, and add more than 3 heaters for the indoor wedding venue they would get 5 stars.

We visited the deli for lunch — had the Tuscan. We didn’t have an opportunity to taste wine because the bar was so busy. Lunch tasted fine and the staff were nice and personable. After walking the grounds for about an hour we headed back to downtown. As I was walking I suddenly felt ill and vomited. I was fine afterward and I don’t necessarily know if it was related to my meal but it certainly seems that way. Hopefully an isolated incident…

Ironstone offers a wonderful variety of wines to choose from — there will absolutely be something for every pallet. I tasted six of their red wines and thoroughly enjoyed all of them! My favorite was the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, but the 2013 Reserve Old Vine Zinfandel was also very good. Bob, our sommelier, was wonderful. He provided a lot of very interesting information about the wines, the history of the company and great tips for visiting the area. Also, we can’t ever get enough of their flowers!

Pros: Museum with artifacts from the Gold Rush era as well as an incredible 44 lb. crystalline gold piece. Recording of the pipe organ being played. Amphitheater with performances from big names.
Cons: Tour guide was unable to answer the major of questions.

Nice selection of wines to sample including reserve wines. My favorites the day I went were the Chardonnay, both white and red obsessions, and the Malbec. Save time to have a bite at the café. Listen to Bob when he says the clam chowder is the best around. He was right. And best of all, the entrance to the winery is one of the prettiest with all of the great flowers.

Wine Spectator hit it on the nose. About the Sierra Foothills wineries: «The area is still unpolished and eccentric in character, but the wines offer an authentic sense of place. And while many of them are of ordinary quality, there is a small but influential group of wineries that are raising the bar.»
This perfectly describes Ironstone Vineyards. Pretty ordinary with a couple offerings that are slightly more distinctive. We sampled 2 whites and 4 reds — and purchased the 2013 «old vine» Zinfandel ($ 28.99) and 2013 Obsession «Symphony» ($ 9.99), which were very inexpensive and quite different from the Napa/​Sonoma profiles that we’re used to. All other wines felt overly dry, not very complex or interesting, and were immediately poured out in the spit bucket.
Overall, we had a nice experience. Appreciated the low-​key atmosphere and kitsch (taxidermy, antique knickknacks, flotsam and jetsam line the walls and fill the space) for what it was. The deli has somewhat limited offerings (4 sandwich options), so we opted to buy prepackaged salami and cheese instead. Five stars to the incredibly nice deli staff who offered to slice it for us (and threw in some sourdough bread to go with it).

Had a great experience with Mario the gold prospector! He helped me pan and I actually found a few nuggets! I recommend that everyone spend the $ 8.00 and get to know a real miner with all the stories to prove it!

Wine tasting– 6 for $ 5. Use the tasting fee towards a wine bottle. Really liked one of their white wines that was about $ 10– can’t beat that!
Sandwiches are big, also good and priced at $ 10. We just split one and they were nice enough to separate it on different plates and add an extra pickle.
Check out the museum next door where you can see the gold nugget exhibit and other cool mining things that were used in the past. You can’t go through the vineyard but you can take a cool picture in front of them.
Looks like a great place for a wedding and reception. It was a little hard getting to it based on the route we came from. Roads are narrow and it’s impossible for cars to pass.

On our way home to LA, our friends suggested we grab a quick bite before making the long drive at the deli at Ironstone. As a plus, we would get to see the largest gold nugget on display there as well.
Well, driving onto the grounds, you can truly see how beautiful the grounds are — lots of green grass, gardens, walking trails, and amazing views from the back patio of the deli/​wine tasting building. On the other end of the complex is their shop, full of antiques, collectibles, and that gold nugget. Enjoyed spending time window shopping here. Lots to see.
The deli is small and is manned by a couple of workers, and is situated next to the wine tasting bar. Line can move a little slow depending on the complexity of the orders of those in front of you, so you may need to be a little patient. They offer an array of mouth watering sandwiches, combinations that just make you go, «wow,» and «yum!» They also offer salads, soups and special hot entrees of the day. Beef Stroganoff was offered on this day, and it was a hit with my friends.
I had the Tuscan sandwich filled with Italian deli meats and cheeses, plus a green olive tapenade spread. For the deli salad side of my choice, which comes with ½ sandwich ½ salad option, which I chose, I selected the shrimp salad. Both were tasty and hit the spot. And sitting on the outside patio deck with views of their grounds was a wonderful and relaxing way to enjoy a lunch.
Love to go back and tour the entire grounds and taste their wines. Who’d knew there would be so much to do here, as well as in Murphys, CA?

Ironstone Vineyards was absolutely beautiful. The tasting room was very large and they had a friendly staff. We were running short on time and didn’t have time to tour the garden, but what we did see was gorgeous. Unfortunately, we didn’t really like any of their wines except for their Zinfandel which we did buy a bottle of. Overall, although it was beautiful and the largest winery in the area, it was just a bit too commercial for us. We had spent the day touring mom and pop smaller wineries, so perhaps if we had started off here, I would have enjoyed it more.

Came here to see the World’s largest nugget. Impressive. The grounds are nicely landscaped the the buildings are charming. There is no charge to see the nugget or the grounds. Ate at the deli and the food was quite good. Had the beef soup, salad and beef strogonoff. Served on paper plates, but the food was good. Ate out on the patio and it was lovely. I don’t drink so I can’t comment on the wine.

Beautiful setting, but I don’t recommend going to their summer concert series: high price, low quality, much of the audience is up walking around so if you’re sitting you can’t see the stage because they only allow low chairs, the food & drink are higher in price and low on quality (and you can’t bring your own), the audience in general is so intoxicated that CHP has checkpoints on Hwy 4 during and after concerts. If you like being around lots of drunk people, then buy some tickets to their summer concert series!
Their wine (And I’ve tasted all of them) is at best, less than mediocre. While they have done a nice job with the facilities and expanded parking, what’s on offer there does not meet expectations. If you are considering holding an event there, keep in mind that its location is off the beaten path, on a narrow windy road. Out of area people will have a hard time finding it.

Spectacular hour or so wandering around included a delicious wine tasting (loved the whites I tried, the meritage, and the port with chocolate piece served by witty pouring pros) (flight of six +/​-​for $ 5, fee waived with bottle purchase, Unilocal check in discount), awesome awesome (twice is nice) veggi sando (lettuce tomato avocado provolone mayo and olive tapenade on thick toasted sliced wheat created by smiling ladies), varied colorful flowers and paths and gardens (preparing for a tulip show, I take it), a small but sweet judged art show, and — to top off a truly nice experience — a historical museum including a massive beautiful piece of gold in a vault.
