Fright Kingdom

We’ve been going to Fright Kingdom every year since they first opened, and something seemed off this year. Hopefully it was just an off night, because usually they are one of my favorites.
There are five haunts, which have been the same for the past few seasons, but I don’t mind that because they are (usually) so well done. The first is a zombie apocalypse, which starts out with a nice surprise. Bloodmare Manor is next, and it’s set up /​décor is one of my absolute favorites. Carnival of Corpses is the third attraction… which is where they started to lose me this year. It’s in 3-​D, which is always appreciated, and the maze leading into it is super fun — but, it seemed to be lacking characters this year. I only saw a few clowns jumping out to scare you, which sucks, because clown houses are usually what I look forward to the most at haunted houses (a friend is terrified of clowns and it’s so entertaining to watch.) We kind of just leisurely strolled through on our own. Fourth is Grim, which is total darkness and so much fun. You need to feel your way through the maze with no source of light, and there are some surprises in the dark as well. Last is the Vampire Castle, which is where they lost me again. Vampires are so played out, but Fright Kingdom usually has a unique take on it. It was the intro and vampires that I am used to seeing there, but I swear the attraction was half as long as it was in the past. In particular, they cut out a room I’ll never forget, because they ALWAYS caught me and my friends off guard in there. It was missing. We were bummed.
Overall, it’s a great place to go. The price is decent. Everything is indoors, which was much appreciated on that cold, rainy night. You flow from one haunt to the next, so there is no running around trying to make sure you see everything. The monster midway is a great way to pass the time if you’re waiting to be called in, complete with food, games, and creepy crawly stuff to look at. And I love the entrance to the building. It’s so inviting if you’re a haunted house fan.

I had a bad experience the first time I came here, which was immediately rectified by the amazing owner Tim Dunne, who deserves a shout out for being a fantastic business owner and an overall great host.
Go here to get out of the cold, stay for the atmosphere.
They have scare actors roaming the parking lot, which I always think is a nice touch. Scares from start to finish. The tickets aren’t too steep, another plus. VIP is a great option, but the midway is well designed to keep people occupied while they wait for their turn. I really enjoyed the zombie dancers and all the different types of pop up scare actors they had roaming around, and the blonde host was so charming and had a true stage presence!
The ticketing staff is all really nice and friendly! They only take cash, but they have an ATM right next to the ticket booth for you at with a whopping $ 3 fee.
As for the houses, they were all really well done. Each one has its own plot and story behind it, and the actors do a great job of keeping that together. They have five houses, the first is a zombie-​themed house, the second is a haunted mansion, the third is a clown themed house, the fourth is a blackout house, and the last is a vampire manor. They are all connected by a winding path littered with props, so even the walk from house to house is interesting and fun.
My favorite house was the clown house. The maze of striped tent to get to it was never ending but a good mind teaser. I loved the 3D effects and there are a few surprise scares that got me good, such as a clown on a giant slingshot and a clown with a chain saw that had my eyes almost bugging out of my head in shock. If they hadn’t told me not to run, I probably would’ve bolted out of there (or straight into a wall) in fear! For the first time ever in a haunted house I’ve shouted an expletive in surprise. The clown just revved his chainsaw and told me to watch my mouth, haha.
The greeter of the clown house was also sassy and funny. All of the greeters were great, it’s obvious why they were chosen to do that job. The greeter of the haunted mansion was very charismatic and charming.
Scariest house definitely goes to the blackout house. I’d been in them before, but this one with its shock effects and at times varying floor panels and entrances make this one above the rest. I won’t say if there’s monsters in there or not (you’ll have to see for yourself), but the sheer blackness and the feeling of nothingness, coupled with well placed, creepy whispers of phrases like ‘Which way now?’, ‘Are you lost?’, ‘Wrong way’, ‘Other way’ make it just psychological enough that it had a haunted house buff like me ready to throw in the towel. I got caught in a corner and it took me almost two minutes to find the way forward, giving me a panicked, boxed-​in feeling that was real and terrifying. I loved it! (but boy was I happy to see the exit)
Four stars for the attractions and the fantastic actors — the fifth star for Tim Dunne, the owner, and his amazing passion for what he does.
Definitely check it out with your family. You won’t regret it.

I took a my current girlfriend to Fright Kingdom in 2012. Tickets were reasonable for a night out and haunted houses are great ice breakers when you are with a women. I got every dollar in enjoyment back from what I paid.
Just the fact that I saw my girlfriend scream in terror a few times made it well worth it. She is terrified of clowns and one of the attractions is all about creepy clowns. To have her latch on to me nice and close made my night! The adrenaline we experienced once it was all done was something we will remember forever. I will definitely go back next year…

Incredibly disappointed with this haunted attraction. The monsters were pretty lame as a lot of them would just scream in your face, which isn’t scary, just incredibly annoying. I wouldn’t waste your time or money on this one.

Long story short, I had a less than great experience and they want to make it up to me! The owner e-​mailed me and is very serious about making good experiences and is willing to go out of his way to make sure you do!

Fright Kingdom is pretty fun for what it is — three haunted houses in a large industrial park-​style warehouse building. The attractions are Bloodmare Manor (a haunted mansion type setup), Psycho Circus (a 3-​D creepy clown area), and Vampire Castle (just what it sounds like).
PROS of this place include:
*The staff obviously enjoy what they do, and they display some great enthusiasm for the guests. They all seem more than happy to pose for photos while you stand in line, and they clearly do their best to scare the bejeezus out of you.
*The entire place is indoors… so if you’re looking for some Halloween fun on a rainy or cold night, this is totally the place to be. 100% climate controlled with a roof over your head.
*The line to get in moves pretty quickly, and even while you’re waiting in line the actors do their best to scare you (I got startled and kind of screamed like a girl the moment after we bought our tickets — it started the evening off right).
*The clentelle skewed a little older than some other places in the area (late teens to mid 30s, mostly) so I didn’t feel like a total creep going there.
CONS of Fright Kingdom are:
*The 3 haunted attractions are each pretty small and don’t take very long to walk through. Vampire Castle, in particular, is a REALLY brief experience — my boyfriend hardly believed it could already be over when we were exiting it.
*I only got genuinely startled perhaps twice during my visit, so it doesn’t rank really high on the scare-​o-​meter.
All in all, Fright Kingdom was a pretty fun time and I’d say it was worth the price of admission, although be sure to get the $ 2 off coupon from their website, since it’s available. I’d probably go back in the future on a rainy (or freezing cold) October night — it just wouldn’t be my first choice otherwise.
