Humane Society For Greater Nashua

Everytime I go in here I get terrible service. I hardly ever get a Hello at the front desk. My last visit I went in and was looking at the dogs, five minutes after being there I was approached by someone and told to leave because they were not open. I was stunned at the attitude I received also I had walked by multiple people working there and nobody said anything to me on top of the front door being unlocked. Today I thought that I would give them one more chance and inquire about a dog I really like but they can’t even seem to answer the phone. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

I adopted my cat, Penguin, here in 2009. The staff were friendly and knowledgable about the personalities of each of the animals, and they introduced me to several cats they thought I’d like (I wanted a younger adult cat that’s friendly and affectionate). I went a few times to meet their cats; there was no rush to adopt, and they let me take my time and were able to answer all of my questions. When I settled on Penguin, the adoption process was easy, and he came neutered with all his shots up to date.
I was so impressed that I’ve gone back several times since then to make donations and visit the kitty residents. They really care about animals and do their best to make the shelter a comfortable temporary home.

We recently had two of our cats neutered there and they were wonderful! The staff was compassionate and efficient and our cats did fine after the surgery. The cost was very reasonable and micro chipping, revolution, and rabies vaccines were all included– they clipped their nails too! I highly recommend the humane society!

I recently discovered this shelter. My indoor cat escaped and thankfully, he’s back. However, while searching, I called the shelter for advice. In addition to taking down my and my cat’s info, they offered a loaner humane trap for a $ 40 deposit and I got to use it for 2 full weeks, if needed. They also said I could call at the end of 2 weeks to let them know if I needed an extension. As if that wasn’t nice enough, they called me a few weeks later to ask if my cat was still missing (he wasn’t) so they could update their records. I had to go into the shelter to pick up the trap and then return it and both experiences were great. They also told me they use a handheld scanner to look for microchips when they get a new admission.
Listen, this place is a gold mine. You’ve got to go just to see the outside of it. There’s the pet cemetery and there’s some trails, there’s a small area where it appears you would gather for the service for the pet, there’s a double door chain link fence enclosure, there’s plenty of parking, beautiful landscaping in the front of the building, a room on the outside where you can spend one-​on-​one time a potential adoptee -. I could go on. I took my dog there recently just to walk around the property. It’s really a top notch place.

The Humane Society is a great place to visit either to adopt a cute kitten or pup, to donate, or just to look at the animals. The staff works very hard to make the pet’s temporary home as safe and as pleasant as possible. I DEFINITELY recommend adopting from the Humane Society

I had the chance to volunteer here over the weekend. It’s a smaller shelter which has a lot going on, and it can be confusing where to go or where you’re allowed to go — but there are a lot of people around working or volunteering who you can ask.

The shelter is tucked away down a couple side roads off the highway there. There’s a pet-​cemetary in front of the place. They are currently working on re-​designing the lobby, so if you go now it’s going to be a little confusing. But if you’re looking to adopt, the cats are in a 2 rooms to your left as you walk in. Adoptable dogs are kept in kennels towards the back of the building. It’s confusing to tell you how to get there; pretty much just keep walking around and look at the signs on doors (if they’re open, you’ll need to close them to read the sign!). You’ll find one that says «Adoptable dogs — come on in!» or something like it. Ask anyone to take one out that you’re interested in.

The dogs have a good amount of space in their kennels. The kennels are broken up into two sections; front and back. The dogs can move between sections using a small door in the wall. The front section has their bedding and water and food. The back section can be used if they want to get away from you or if they need to relieve themselves at night. Pretty handy.

There are a couple trails out back that dogs can be walked — they’re nice but super short. There are a couple runs in the front, but one is all-​dirt and the other has rocks and doesn’t look like it’s used much. The dogs here get enough attention. There are plenty of people on hand to help them out, and they track when the dogs were out using a big board.

The volunteer program is very old-​school, in that you check in and out using a binder with paper. Other facilities have electronic systems, but this place is all donation-​funded. No state funding here (if I remember correctly from my training). The dog training I went through was useful. They have different «levels» of dog-​walkers here, based on your hours. I’m not sure who is tracking that, and if and when I get «upgraded» to a different level. I’ve volunteered at other shelters before and have managed difficult dogs so you’d think they’d let me help out with all dogs. But for now I am relegated to the few that I’m allowed to take out for walks, and they already get out a ton.

It’s a cute shelter. If you’re looking for a cat, they have some awesome ones here — very unique looking. Dogs come and go — but they get regular shipments in so check back often. Cute little shelter.

We just adopted our dog there after visiting several boston area rescue groups. These guys really know dogs and could read that we were experienced dog owners without the snooty, you’re not good enough for our dogs attitude that you can run into at some of the suburban rescues. Very friendly, knowledgeable and supportive staff. (Forever home rescue in medfield ma is also a great group.) Highly recommend Humane society for greater nashua !

We adopted a puppy from here and it was wonderful! They keep the place very clean and the staff were really friendly and helpful. It didn’t make me feel sad at all (like some other Boston area shelters).
They really care about the animals and ask questions, make sure existing dogs will get along with new dogs. The staff knew all the puppies and dogs by name and had temperament evaluations done on each one so we knew that our puppy was shy and would need extra careful socialization. They also get dogs transported from southern high-​kill shelters so you know you’re really rescuing a dog, our baby came from North Carolina.
Puppies come with all their shots up to date and spay/​neuter. It was expensive, but in the same range as other shelters in mass/​southern nh. For puppies, they also give you a credit for going to puppy school which I think is really smart. We bought a puppy crate from them too for $ 5 or $ 10 more.
They get new dogs in regularly and the puppies adopt out quickly, we went on a Saturday and the dog we wanted was adopted already when we came back on Sunday. They said new dogs will be out Monday, so we took off from work at lunchtime to visit and half the puppies were already on hold. By the next day when we brought out other dog back for a visit, pretty much all the puppies were gone. So if you’re looking for a puppy in the Boston area or NH, find out when new dogs are coming in and go here!

I love it here – we got our kitty Macy here two years ago and still drop by to make donations and to visit the animals. The workers and volunteers are awesome and really care about animals.
It’s a no-​kill shelter too.
