Toyama House Japanese Steakhouse & Hibachi

I went here recently for hibachi, and unlike some other reviews, my food was incredibly fresh and very well prepared. My only complaint is that The place was packed, and there needed to be another server to keep up with the crowd.

Amazing food, great vibes, decent prices, fantastic service. Didn’t know this was tucked away behind Publix, so happy to have sushi near our place in Nipper’s corner! :)

These places are all the same, same gimics, same food. The soup tasted like water and was cold, the salad had way too much dressing on it which left you with a bowl of watery dressing at the bottom, and the server was too busy having all the tables he couldn’t focus on us to fix our issues. Our cook was super nice but I’ve seen the same things cooked the same way no matter where you go in this country, if you have been to one you have been to all of them. Onion volcano, chicken worm, flipping shrimp in your mouth, etc. No originality whatsoever. Take note of how much butter is being used to prepare your food, it’s asinine how much butter is used. Food was ok, ambiance and service were not, also the place was filty. Def won’t return. Mikado is way better but once again, it’s essentially the same place, as all are.

I used to love Toyama b/​c of their sushi. Great location and good sushi!
However, their management (owner who sits on his laptop at the community table) has always been bad and I’ve been told «we close soon» too many times to return here. Everyone knows when you close, there is a sign posted. Rushing people out during their meal b/​c you close mid-​day is so unprofessional and bad for business. I’ve literally been told to leave just a few minutes after closing time as I was trying to finish up my meal. I won’t be back. I’ve also never had good service there in 4 years.
I’m SHOCKED this place is still in business with how poorly it’s run.
The sushi chef has always been nice — other than him, its a losing situation.

Sushi only review: Huge selection of interesting and creative specialty rolls in addition to the basics. I was really surprised to find good sushi at a hibachi style restaurant, especially because the sushi menu is not on the website (I’m posting a pic of the sushi menu). Atmosphere is not great as far as sushi places go, but the sushi chefs are really nice and the small bar is perfect for dinner for two. Specialty Roll Reccomendations: Dancing Dragon, Fugi, Hella Hot, Pretty Woman. Soup and salad are also good. Great place to pick up sushi on the way home. They also have wine and champagne, nothing fancy, but they have it.

My family loves it here. The food is good, the hibachi chefs are very entertaining, and we are always treated well. We will continue to go here.

This place has great service, and the sushi is the best I’ve had in Nashville so far. My server’s name was Will and he was awesome! I literally couldn’t tip him anything under $ 10. I’m not sure what the food is like, because I only go for the sushi, but my experience is always great. I love this place!

I wish this place was better because it’s so close to our house. We have tried multiple times to give this place a shot but there service is super slow every time. I would order more drinks but they never come by to ask if we want more. The food is not great either. This last time I had the chirashi and most of the fish smelled fishy and was rubbery. Definitely not how it was supposed to be. The staff is really nice just not very present.

Love this place. We always enjoy our meal and the servers are friendly.

We stopped by for lunch and never made it to a table. We asked for a table for five for hibachi and the guy, who I assume is the owner, just looked at us and said «no.» It was a very strange and rude response. Needless to say, we won’t be back.

Overpriced, low quality. We went for hibachi. We were first served salads with brown iceberg lettuce. I’m kicking myself for not taking photos but my phone was completely dead. Then the clear soup was chicken broth/​soup based… EW! My 7 yr old normally loves clear soup and wouldn’t touch it. It was like a ramen noodle chicken packet was used with freeze dried mushrooms. The chef was friendly, took 30 mins to come to us in an otherwise dead restaurant. The soy ginger sauce was great. Had a very good flavor. The veggies were great as well. My filet mignon had a weird kind of «soapy» taste. So on the menu they have green tea ice cream, a fav of mine, which I tried to order, only to be told that they had rainbow sherbet only. I was so disappointed. So 70 $ later for two adults and a child, I knew I’d likely not be back to this place… like…ever.

So wonderful! Great quality in food and the chefs couldn’t be more entertaining. Highly recommended.

I love Toyama!!! One of my favorite places to eat in Tennessee. Clean kind and above all a fun atmosphere. The food is great and the bartenders know how to mix one hell of a drink!
I took my friends 4 year old with me the last time I went all she will eat is chicken nuggets. So I ordered a few things off the menu and told her it was chicken. Now she asks me to take her for sushi every time I see her. Just writing this review makes me want sushi right now.
Toyama is the best.

Service has gone completely downhill. Will not be back.
The service failures are too great to mention. Owner spends all his time sweeping the floor so he doesn’t have to interact with customers. They keep wedging people in to try to make more money. This place absolutely stinks now.

Had dinner here last night. Awful. I’ve been here plenty of times in the past. So after hearing from a close friend that it was bad last time she went– I was curious to see if it was just a bad night. I’m now certain that this place has went to complete crap. The soup has changed & it’s disgusting like the miso soup at sushi o sushi (which I described as toilet water). The fried rice had a weird after taste. There are ‘help wanted’ signs all over … This is a sign of horrible management. I won’t be going back. Can’t believe I used my calorie intake on that.

My boyfriend and I LOVE this place! It’s can be a little pricey but we always do the for two option on our meals and always end up having leftovers. The staff has always been great when we are there. As usual when you sit at the hibachi tables you do have to wait for them to fill up but it doesn’t usually take long. We’ve also eaten at the bar and loved getting to talk with the bartenders, they were great!

Not the best food in the area. For what you’re getting there are much better restaurants less than a mile away.

If I could put negative stars I would! This place is utterly ridiculous. We just left about an hour ago for the following reasons:
1) Place is old: menus are falling apart and ranges are gross. If you’re charging about $ 20/​plate or more you can afford to get your ranges cleaned. I mean come on…
2) Salad has thousand island dressing and looks like the salad you can get from Costco in a big bag for under $ 2 we’ve been to a ton of Tepanyaki Grills and salad should be served with ginger dressing –I tried it and fiancé refused to eat it… What a waste
3) Onion mushroom soup is a joke… It tastes like cup of noodles soup with a few pieces of green onion and 2 pieces of mushroom… Gross… Another waste…
What did it for us was the service. Not by our waitress but by the owner! There was one couple seated to our right and then there was the two of us. Another couple came with their baby and the owner came to our table to seat them and «shoo-​ed» my fiancé to move. Then he sat a larger group across from us and was pointing at a person and pointing at the chair for them to sit… How rude! And he was frowning the whole time! After this, my fiancé was fuming… If you’re not grateful for your customers then you don’t deserve any business.
We asked for our check and the waitress brought it and asked what was wrong but my fiancé didn’t want to deal with the owner. They charged us $ 15.27 for two sweet teas we didn’t drink, 1 untouched salad, 1 half eaten salad and 2 untouched soups. If you owned a restaurant and $ 70 – 100 ticket is about to walk out the door, wouldn’t you go and try to fix the problem? We know our waitress told the owner because we saw her go up to him and he just walked off.
DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME AND EAT HERE!
We just finished eating at another Steakhouse and got much better service and food was so much better.

2 words: ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!! Been to this place before & it was decent. My recent visit involved small & slimy sushi rolls and greasy entrees. I had severe stomach pain all night & couldn’t sleep. Worst meal I’ve had in a long time.
