History

Established in 2004.

Drawn together by a passion for knitting, the 5 current partners, a/​k/​a «The Flock,» purchased the shop from the prior owners, Susan and Debbie, and opened for business March 1, 2010. Previously, the partners had all been involved with Graceful Stitches, a not-​for-​profit yarn shop in Medfield that benefited cancer-​related charities.

Our goal is to create a welcoming experience for our customers. We love to see familiar faces and look forward to meeting new fiber enthusiasts!

This is the kind of LYS that makes you lust. Gorgeous selection of yarns with both depth and breadth in color and fiber.
The store also has lots of knitted samples which is great way to see how the yarn looks and feels once knit and of course gives you ideas of all the beautiful things you could make too!
The staff is knowledgable and helpful. They offer all sorts of classes too including topics beyond basic knitting. The store is clean, well lit and organized.
The store hours aren’t great for the typical person though as it’s usually open only until 5pm and only on Saturday.

This is a very pleasant, well organized yarn shop with a good selection of yarns to choose from and friendly, helpful staff. They have on display throughout the store sample knit projects to inspire creativity, which I think is a lovely idea. The low rating is solely for their disappointing return policy. They do not give refunds. All you can get is a store credit for returned yarn. This is a deal breaker for me since I can shop for yarn elsewhere and make returns easily. I can’t fathom the reasoning. The returned yarn goes right back on the shelf to be sold again.

I come here a couple of times a year. They carry a wide variety of hand dyed yarns (which I love) as well as staple yarns. The owners are great. Love the samples.

I’ve been to most of the yarn stores in the Boston area and DC, and BSK is by far my favorite! They have a solid selection that combines my go tos with some really special treats (loved the Ellie’s reclaimed cashmere, for example), and they do a really nice job selecting colors to carry. Shop atmosphere is warm and welcoming– the shop owners are almost always there and always happy to answer questions, offer project ideas, or help sort out knitting problems. Also, this may sound silly, but I love that they’re well organized and can tell you how much of a given yarn or color they have on hand… very helpful for sweater or blanket knitters like me. I’ve been in several times over the last few years, and always had a wonderful experience there.

A true haven for dye-​hard (sorry) knitters like me. Great selection of gorgeous yarns. The staff is absolutely wonderful — and so many of them! I only go on weekends, but it seems that they have at least three or four people working, which means you hardly ever have to wait for help. I recently asked for help with a sweater made with yarn I bought out of town, and they were happy to help, even though I felt a little guilty about it. And then of course, I bought a new project.
Serious knitters and beginners alike — go!

I’ve had really bad experiences at LYS in the past, but I had a great experience at Black Sheep Knitting yesterday. The store is clean, cozy (yet spacious) and well organized. I’m a huge fan of wool and wool blends, but my friend who has severe wool and animal fiber allergies is also able to shop the store with ease as well. Great selection. Not a ton of Noro (I only saw Silk Garden), but they had pretty much everything else.
Service was super friendly — they add you to their e-​mail list and send you a coupon on your birthday month. They’re also very welcoming to new knitters and extremely helpful — I saw a shop associate walk over to the computer and help a timid customer browse patterns on Ravelry for fingerless gloves, as well as another associate connect with a customer who mentioned she is «very new.»

Every time I go to this store I don’t want to leave. Each and every one of the staff is lovely and helpful, but somehow know when I just want to be left alone to «decide» — difficult to do with all these wonderful yarns.
It would be terrific if there were more classes and knitting circles scheduled for us working women. Ahhhh… but then I really would never leave!!!

I agree with previous reviewers. I love to knit but stink at it. I have been to yarn shops where I was judged because I was, well, knitting a scarf. I love just being here, and I do buy yarn and appreciate their help even though I am hopeless. Thanks Black Sheep staff for all the encouragement. Great selection, well-​informed staff (they have even offered to LEND me needles when I’ve bought yarn). The classes look wonderful (I’ve never taken any). They are around the corner from several consignment shops (but I digress).

I looove this yarn shop. I went in here about a week ago looking for a job, actually.
The owners (Susan & Debbie) are so sweet and very willing to help. They have a beautiful selection and a very well-​kept shop. I’ve seen my share of hole-​in-​the-​wall yarn shops and this certainly isn’t one of them.
I actually have to go back tomorrow to pick up another skein and I can’t wait :) I just wish yarn ran cheaper, but that’s certainly not their fault.

Update: Susan and Debbie have recently (early 2010) sold the shop. My review and visits predate the shop sale. The new owners formerly ran Graceful Stitches in Medfield. Nice that the shop stayed in local hands, and I’ll be interested to see what direction these ladies take Black Sheep in.

Susan and Debbie were born to own a yarn shop. I love going in there, chiefly because they make you feel welcome, but leave you alone as you ponder their stock.
Beautiful store, organized well, and plenty of room to move around. Worth a trip to Needham!

Haven for knitters and crocheters. The owners of this fiberlicious store carry beautiful yarns from around the world, books and all tools you need to get your project completed. Staff and owners are super friendly and will help answer your questions. I love the fact that they have samples of projects up in the store so you can not only get ideas but see how certain yarns will knit (or crochet) up.
