I’ve been eating at Battle’s in Nevada for years. I caught the Battle’s bug when I was student at Iowa State University and was a regular patron of their location in Campustown. I would say that the Nevada location gets higher marks than it’s Ames counter part for service, and upkeep of their building. The food here is good, and I prefer it over the much ballyhooed Hallowed Purveyors of barbecue over in Ames. The sauces here are very good. I’ve been hooked on their Hot BBQ sauce for a very long time. The style is closest to Texas style, but there’s more than just beef here. There’s an emphasis on smoked meat sandwiches, but there are high-quality ribs and chicken. They also offer bottomless tea and lemonade. Once a blue moon that they’ll offer desserts of sweet potato pie or lemon chess. If there’s a sign on the door, you’re in luck and you need to pounce on it, because they’re not going to last. Battle’s is a area legend and it was family-owned and operated until just recently when there was an ownership change. They’ve held true to most of their barbecue techniques and sauces, but their baked beans(which were my all-time favorite) and sandwich prices have taken a turn for the worst. I understand that barbecue has a high-markup because of the investment in time. I do a lot of smoking myself, but the newer prices occasionally cause me to hesitate patronage. Is it the best BBQ in the area? Yes. Are the large sandwiches worth $ 7 Maybe. Fortunately their ribs and chicken are priced within expectation for what you’d pay anywhere else.
