A girl’s guide to the Portuguese feast: . 1. Some people call it the feast, some call it the feshta(sp?). Do not let this confuse you, it’s all the same. 2. Your best times to go are during the day. Any time the sun is out it is less crowded, and therefore the crowds will not be as violent. 3. Allow at least a half an hour for parking. It is on street parking only. 4. If you are going to go with someone and you will be drinking, keep in mind that the madeira wine is like Portuguese tequila, it can really mess with some people. Some people that are normally good drunks will possibly turn violent on you. Having said that, you may want to chose the friends that you bring with you wisely. 5. When you are getting your wrist band, and it is busy, and you are over 35, there is sometimes an ‘old person line’ where you can get an express for being old. 6. Remember kids, rides first, then alcohol and food. 7. The whole of the feast is a little… well…weird. Between the people wearing beanies and the folk dancers, you just sort of have to roll with it. Have another glass of wine, it will make it all better!

Planned my summer vacay to include a stop at the Feast. Sweetie boyfriend lives in the area and has gone each year. Based on his experiences, I needed to attend the Feast. It was a rainy weekend so our plan to go a few times just didn’t happen. Saturday night there was a break in the rains, so we headed over. We parked at a meter, feet away from where 7 people were shot an hour after we left(Acushnet Ave). Ya, this city has some serious violence so watch your back. The feast is free to enter and you wait in wicked long lines to buy tickets(no cash accepted) to buy wine and food. Whilst the lines were long to get tickets, everyone was orderly even though many of the machines were out of order. We sampled the sweet Madeira wine(holy hangover, this brew is strong). We had local food as well including sweet fluffy malassadas. The meat pit was pretty cool to watch even though I don’t eat meat. The Aerosmith cover band was just ok but we LOVED the Portuguese band. It was so fun… lots of skin(sexy outfits), mega people watching and some really drunk people… we had a blast…
