I must say, The Grapes of Rat was a much welcomed venue here in New Bern, NC. There’s nothing better than wine and cheese, complimented by their delicious truffle fries.
Located atop Captain Ratty’s Seafood, it’s a quaint little room with limited seating. Be sure to try a wine flight for $ 10.00, which is well worth the money. You can choose five reds (or whites), and sample all five. You’re also able to do a «Round Trip», in which you sample all their wines on the menu for the evening.
Feel free to eat from their regular menu, and simply choose to sit in the wine bar. For me, it’s a much better ambiance than the restaurant itself. If you’re interested in a good view; however, try the rooftop above Captain Ratty’s. It’s not technically part of the wine bar, but you can order from their wine menu.
Don’t leave without trying a cheese plate or truffle fries. They give a generous portion of cheeses that can be shared with at least three or four people. My friends and I always sample them together (along with the wines), and we always have a great time; especially 3 flights in! ;-)

Came here expecting a repeat experience of our first time. Not even close. We ordered the 6 wines again. They gave us all six wines at once in tiny pitchers. Less than an ounce of wine in each. Gave us white wine glasses for both reds and whites. Table cloth at our table was to the floor and very uncomfortable and kept getting caught on my legs. Asked the waitress if we could remove the pesky table cloth and were told «Not really». The cheese platter was not too good. The cheeses were fine and all but they served them with knock off Ritz Crackers which did not fit with the expensive cheeses at all. Very disappointing the second time around. Pretty typical of a ENC establishment to go down hill like that though. Oh well. Won’t be back. We went to Persimmons to try to save the night and were pleased with our drinks and service there. I had a couple of tasty whiskey sours and my beautiful girlfriend had a good chardonnay. We wished we had gone there first.

Been here twice. Once for ladies night out & once with my husband. Stellar service, amazing wines, and the ambiance is impeccable. We will dine again! Wednesdays 530−730…$ 10 wine tastings!
