History
Established in 1965.
The University Inn was formerly Lindenwood, a private residence, built in 1911 for Sydney Bleeker Carpender and his wife Louise. Louise was daughter of James Wood Johnson, once of the brothers who founded the firm Johnson & Johnson. The 20-room tudor-style manor was appointed with lush landscaping. Rutgers acquired the estate in 1965 in order to provide continuing education services for non-degree programming. The newer portion of the facility was built in 1969 as an expansion to accommodate the growing operations. Numerous gifts from George Mennen, Glenn Gardiner, and Samuel G Cooper made it possible. Since that time the facility has undergone a name change, renovations, and upgrades. The rich history and continual positive evolution leave people quoting that it is truly a hidden gem in New Brunswick.
