History

Established in 1978.

Early Background

The first recorded purchase of the land was in 1800, which eventually became part of the Louisiana Purchase. Since then, generation after generation has been drawn to a special elusive quality that pervades the Cedar Creek property. Owner after owner purchased it for the same reason — as a refuge, a place for the soul to be nurtured.

The Vatterott Legacy

In 1978, the Marianists sold the property to John C. and Joan Vatterott. John, son of Charles and Patricia, is the founder of Vatterott College, which has 17 campuses including Missouri locations in St. Ann, Sunset Hills, Kansas City, Springfield and Joplin.

Cedar Creek Opens its Doors to the Public

After successfully providing years of hospitality and accommodations to corporate groups and organizations, Cedar Creek now opens its doors to everyday guests, while remaining available to corporate groups and organizations for meetings and events. It’s the ideal getaway for families, couples and groups of all sizes.

The Vatterott Legacy

In 1953, Charles and Patricia Vatterott bought Cedar Creek as a place where their family, which included 17 children, could retreat from city life and entertain friends and the large extended Vatterott family. As members of this prominent St. Louis family, Charles and Patricia had the resources needed to expand and renovate the property during their ownership, restoring its historic buildings, creating the Western Town, and adding many improvements that Cedar Creek guests still enjoy today. In 1965, they donated the property to the Marianists, who used it as a retreat center and began building its conference areas.

The Cedar Creek Conference Center Is Born

The Vatterotts turned the property into the modern Cedar Creek Conference Center, combining modern meeting and conference accommodations with the spirit of their family’s hospitality. They have invested significantly in updating and adding amenities to the property, transforming it into a unique group retreat.
