Lucy’s Place

Finding a gem like Lucy’s Place is always exciting, but the food here is the real reward. Tucked between some sort of medical supply manufacturer and a scrap yard on Middletown Avenue, Lucy’s is the kind of «blink and you will miss it» place that just beckons further exploration. Décor is sparse and functional, but the place is clean (so are the bathrooms), and that’s important. We ordered from the Mexican portion of the menu, in fact requesting most of what was available as to try it all. We were told there are daily specials with both the Mexican and Dominican dishes, but they weren’t posted anywhere, and that should be addressed… because the food is brilliant! We started with Tacos al Pastor which contained slow cooked pork, pineapple, radishes, crema, queso fresco and lime wedges on the side. They were served on homemade tortillas, as was everything else, and they were surreal. Light, tasty and layered with flavor. Are you ready for this? They cost $ 2.50 each! Bananas! We also had the Huaracha, which is a thicker, larger, flat, pan-​fried tortilla, smeared with beans, something like a tostada, again homemade, and topped with smoked chicken that was off the chain delicious! I mean, dayumn! The Huaracha also contained the queso fresca and shredded cabbage along with some other vegetation. Quite frankly, I was inhaling it too quickly to notice what else. We also ordered the Chiles Rellenos which were huge and stuffed with a fat pillow of cheese (much more than usual) and topped with an earthy red sauce. Rice beans and homemade spicy salsa are served with everything, as well as homemade tortilla chips. We also enjoyed a steak burrito that was tender and delicious, and had no fat or gristle in it. Our entire bill was around $ 30, and we literally rolled out of the place. I was born in the southwestern United States and visited Mexico frequently growing up. I was raised on Mexican food, and I feel I am something of an expert on the cuisine, so believe me when I tell you that Lucy’s is some of the best and most authentic I’ve had. The very pleasant and helpful waitress, Nyomi, explained that if we called ahead and requested anything special in terms of food or quantity (like mole for 50), they could accommodate us. Jarritos Mexican sodas are also available with all the usual tea, coffee and sodas. They also have a fairly extensive delivery network. Not being as familiar with Dominican food as I am with Mexican, I plan to visit Lucy’s many more times and sample all of that as well. Some of the other reviewers here have had it, and I feel confident that if it was half as fantastic as the Mexican fare was, it will be absolutely delicious! Put Lucy’s Place on your radar! Now!

Nothing beats lazy Saturday afternoon hunger like massive qualities of hot, freshly made Dominican food delivered directly to my home. Less than 45 minutes after ordering online, 4 steaming containers of food were at my door by a very nice man in a shiny red car.
First we tried the yaroa, a massive tray of french fries and shredded chicken covered in a half pound of melted cheese. Who doesn’t love that?! Next was the chilaquiles with salsa verde. This is usually one of my favorite dishes so my standards are high. This one came with a layer of greens, so it was good, but maybe not my favorite. The pernil was excellent. Juicy chunks of well seasoned pork on a bed of peppers and onions, and a large portion of rice and beans. I will definitely order this again. Also got the Pollo Torta, which was okay. The bread was a bit dry and the breaded chicken was thin, however it was layered with cheese, beans and avocado, which brought it all together. Since the other $ 8 options were massive and delicious, I would say this was maybe a $ 5 torta. Finally, a taco, because a taco is always the true test. Nice big portion of meat and cilantro in tiny corn tortilla. I’m sure I will eat many of these in the future.
I will definitely order from here again, as I still need to try the mafongo, canoas, huaraches, fajitas, and pozole. But please add desserts to your online menu! I was so sad when I saw tres leches on a paper menu that came with the food! I would have definitely ordered that!
