This toll is only a buck. I’m sure you can find a dollar in your cup holders to help support the private roads of Avery Island. This toll booth reminds you that this island isn’t part of the public roadways, that they’re on their own out here. Them Northern Imperialist Yankees’ roadways ain’t stretching out on to this island. This island has had some problems in the past with people out of Washington telling them what to do, when Union troops came and invaded it. I think that making their own roadways on the island was a good way to keep their old ways and having their own roadways without the government getting involved. It goes to a good cause, as the roadway to the Tabasco factory and the nature preserve is a beautiful one. The guy in the toll booth is good natured about accepting pennies and nickles.

One Dollar to help keep the Island clean and the roads operational. Even though the toll booth is on the right, just roll down the window and he takes the money and give you the pass at the end of a long stick with a clip on the end. It is kinda fun, especially the first time. Enjoy
