History
Established in 1884.
Audubon Zoo traces its history to 1884 when site improvements were made for The World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition (Louisiana’s first world’s fair) laid the foundation for an urban park. An aviary became the first exhibit, although proposals for a zoological garden at the Uptown park began as early as 1894. For decades, the zoo expanded, to its current 58 acres, allowing for sweeping natural habitats that mirrored wild environments: the African Savanna, North American Grasslands and the South American Pampas. Other new adventures included a Children’s Zoo and a World of Primates exhibit.
