Cork & Bottle Fine Wines

This review is loooong overdue! The staff here knows me well, it’s my friendly neighborhood wine and beer shop! I frequently stop in for their free tastings, every week on Thursday and Friday from 5 – 7. Don’t worry, I always purchase something. Sometimes you can find the same items as Rouse’s for a bit less but mostly, it’s a pretty unique selection and fairly priced. The staff is very helpful and if you join their mailing list, you get weekly emails about what is going on with the tastings, as well as specials and other savings.

Basically the best ever. I waited much too long to come in here since I live essentially across the street. These guys have:
Fulfilled a last minute special order within 24 hours.
Saved my reputation as a sophisticated urbane adult by offering perfect recommendations to match my budget and the cuisine at dinner parties. (meaning:
«This bottle tastes and looks a lot more expensive than it is so your friends will be impressed and continue to invite you over»)
The owner gave me his cell phone number and told me to call him if I needed anything because he wouldn’t be working when I was throwing a party… because he was going to the LSU/​Alabama game. People from Louisiana will understand what a commitment that is.

This is primarily a wine store and I’m sure it’s a fine one. I was here for craft beer.
There selection is pretty decent, arranged mostly by region in the world. They don’t have as much exotic stuff as Stein’s or even Rouse’s on Barronne, but a solid selection. I didn’t see anything refrigerated, which is bad if you want something cold to-​go. The prices are confusing and quite high. All beer as far as I could figure out was priced per bottle. I’d pass on this one unless, you’re crazy like me and have to visit ALL of the beer stores in cities that you visit.
I’m glad I went to this store because they had bottles of Brooklyn Brewing Black Ops, which I had never had access to where I live.

Really great selection of wine and beer, but honestly, I’m fine with Rouse’s selection, too. Prices were a little higher than what I expected ($ 10 and up) but that may be because I’m used to the $ 10 or less table. Came in for a moscato and red wine for sangria, ended up going to rouses and getting a double red for $ 7.50 and a moscato for $ 6.49. Yes, I’m cheap.

I’ve bought some of the best wines OF MY LIFE here, and yep, that’s wineS plural. All of the employees seem knowledgeable & it’s a nice break from the selection at Rouses. Also, pssst! they’re pretty much the same price as Rouses too. Which is better than I can say for some other wine stores in town!
I once ducked in, still in my workout clothes to get one of my said trusty bottles of wine (that would be in the Riesling section, thank you very much) and there was a Champagne tasting going on! I felt silly but that bottle was well deserved! Next time I will check on the tasting situation ahead of time.
Also, I appreciate that if the store is closed, you can still pretty much order the bottle (if you beg hard enough– & your clothes are dumb enough?) from the bar & they will just charge you a corking fee. As I mentioned before, all those folks are incredibly nice & seem to really know a lot about their wines. The beer selection is pretty fantastic as well.

Cute store and great location in the American Can building in Mid City. They have an extensive selection of imported and domestic wines and suprisingly a very impressive selection of beers and ciders. I recommend this store to any wine lover! Colbye, the Ops Manager, is very well informed and always recommends a winner! She and the other staff are super cool and wonderful to chat with. 5 Stars!

We liked this place. Went to the library in the American Can building (Where some dude was checking out porn in plain view of everyone).
We checked out their booze selection (A little higher than Rouses but a good selection) and then the beers. We ended up doing a mix and match beer 6-​pack they were selling for 6 bucks. While I didn’t love all the beers we selected, I loved the ability to pick and choose different kinds to try.
The staff was great and were very willing to answer any questions we had. They weren’t overly-​clingy and let us do our thing.
All in all, a really great experience. and we look forward to going back.

Stopped in to buy cheese to go with the amazing loaf of bread I picked up at the green market (it’s a wine store, they MUST sell cheese, right?)
In general, this is a great place, huge selection of beers and wines, but I wouldn’t recommend buying cheese there because no one really seems to know how it works. They’ve got a small selection (tasty stuff, though!) and it seems to be designed more for cheese plates people can order at Clever next door, and not so much for picking up a hunk of cheese to take home (like they have at Swirl). It’s sold by the ounce, and seems to be reasonably priced, and I’m super glad they have it because I would probably have been annoyed if I went in specifically to buy cheese and there wasn’t any. But, I wouldn’t go to Cork and Bottle specifically to buy cheese. Obviously. It’s a wine shop.
Anyway, for what it’s worth, that’s what I learned today. So there you go. You’re welcome.
P. S. They evidently do free tastings on Thursdays and Fridays, from 5−7pm.

This place is far more than a wine shop. They carry a wide selection of tough to find brands of spirits, have a full bar in the back, live music Thursday-​Saturday, and an extremely knowledgable staff. These guys know their alcohol and will find you exactly what you’re looking for. And they have tons of wine, wine-​tastings, and specials.

I stopped by the Cork & Bottle at the same time as the Mid City Green Market. They were having a wine tasting and the wines were mighty tasty. I was impressed with their stock & the sales people were helpful but not pushy.
PLUS, they have their bourbon selection bottled by a company in Kentucky. How cool is that? And did I mention that it’s a mighty tasty bourbon too.

I recently abandoned bikram yoga and have been able to fill that void by wandering the aisles of the wine store, aka my place of worship. I can spend hours meandering around, reading labels… it’s meditative.
I want to give a shot out to my fave, Cork + Bottle, because they’ve earned it.
My love for this place is based on the selection and, more so, the utter lack of pretension.
I always have really good luck finding what I’m looking for at Cork + Bottle. Whenever I go through a phase (eg southern Italian whites) they’ve never failed to supply me with what I’m looking for. Case in point: one Friday afternoon I got a hankering for a dark n’ stormy. Although I’d never been able to find the «correct» rum with which to make dark n’ stormies (Gosling’s black rum), that didn’t stop me from searching. On a hunch, I called Cork + Bottle. Not only did they have exactly one bottle of Gosling’s, they also sell Regatta, the most appropriate ginger beer for the cocktail in question (both the rum and ginger beer are from Bermuda). I have since seen Gosling’s sold in other liquor stores, but at the time, it felt like fate.
But wait, still more… they’ve opened up a small bar next door named Clever. My hubby and I stopped in this weekend and tried an amazingly refreshing rum cocktail that put mojitos to shame. I would try to recreate the cocktail at home, but I think some of its magic comes from the house made seltzer. I enjoyed a delicious unoaked chardonnay that actually tasted like fruit, as opposed to oak and butter.
When I asked the owner why the bar was so inconspicuous, he told me he has no problem with it being low key and actually wants to keep it that way for a while, which of course made me like it even more.
I like to go on Thursdays, when the American Can becomes a veritable one stop shop as there is a farmer’s market in the parking lot and I can get my wine and veggies at the same time.

My buddy works here so I feel that I am a bit biased but I think C&B is pretty cool and here is why …
1) Free wine on Thursdays
2) Large beer selection … better than whole foods
3) Helpful and knowledgeable friends I mean staff
4) Newly opened wine and scotch bar
So here it is my flawed biased review take it for what its worth.

I haven’t been here in a couple years — but they used to have one of the best selections of Grateful Palate wines in the country — a most visit for those in search of top end Aussies. Give them a call. They always treated me like I was a VIP — really great experience.
