History

Established in 1967.

Though there is no argument about where jazz began (it began here in New Orleans), there’s no shortage of opinions about which musician was the first to play jazz, some of them put forth by the musicians themselves. Ferdinand Joseph Lamothe was a true original whose prodigious talents and contributions to jazz history were almost matched by his ability for self-​aggrandizement. You probably know him better by the name he picked up playing piano, «I created jazz, and there’s no jazz but Jellyroll’s Jazz.“Jelly Roll Morton was partially raised by his loving godmother, Eulalie Echo, who was the favorite Voodoo priestess of the Storyville Madames. He grew up listening to (and soon playing) the piano in the very same pleasure houses where Eulalie performed her gris-​gris. Her Voodoo alarmed Jelly. It actually downright scared him.
