The Ruby Slipper Café specializes in breakfast & brunch all day everyday! We are a scratch-​kitchen, using fresh ingredients available from local purveyors. Our coffee and espresso are locally-​roasted fair trade selections. We also offer great «brunch» drinks such as Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, Brandy Milk Punch, Irish Coffee and seasonal specialty drinks, along with beer, wine and sparkling wine.

Some of our house specialties include Eggs Blackstone, Eggs Cochon, BBQ Shrimp & Grits, and Bananas Foster French Toast.

History

Established in 2008.

The original Ruby Slipper Café opened in May 2008 in Mid-​City New Orleans. It is located in a cozy & inviting space that was formerly a traditional New Orleans corner store.

The second location opened Downtown at 200 Magazine Street in December 2010. Located in the historic Pelham Hotel, this location quickly became a destination for local business people and tourists.

In November 2012, The Ruby Slipper Café proudly opened its Marigny location at 2001 Burgundy Street. This location is housed in a historic bank building from the 1920s, and urban legend says this bank was robbed by Bonnie & Clyde!

The newest location of the Ruby Slipper Café opened at 1005 Canal Street in January 2014. The stunning renovation of the former McCrory’s 5 & 10 has given this block of Canal Street a boost!

Locally-​owned & Operated, The Ruby Slipper Café has become known as NOLA’s favorite Breakfast & Brunch café, receiving accolades from all the local reader’s polls & critics alike.

Business Owner

My husband and I founded The Ruby Slipper Café in May 2008 as part of our post-​Katrina effort to positively contribute to the recovery of our Mid-​City neighborhood, which sustained severe flood damage.

The restaurant was an instantt hit, and we slowly built to four New Orleans locations. We are very excited to open our first location outside New Orleans in the heart of historic Downtown Pensacola, Florida.

We have 3 elementary-​school aged children, and actively support the communities where we do business and live.

Oh my yum! A friend and I stopped in here on a (non-​holiday) Monday morning around 9, and the place was hopping!
After we were seated we scooped up some coffee and dove into the menu
I had the breakfast sandwich, and my friend had the Chicken St. Charles. She made the wiser choice — I snuck a bite and it was drool-​worthy, but my sandwich was pretty good too, but it was no Chicken St. Charles.
The parking lot and restroom are tiny, but the food is good and the portions are hearty! The next time I’m in NOLA I will be back!

Friends and I have eaten at the Ruby Slipper three times, and every time the food was delicious. Today I had banana strawberry pancakes with a caramel like sauce on top. SO GOOD. Others had poached eggs with a seafood sauce, and an omelet with andouille sausage. Service was great, coffee was outstanding, and the restaurant was not so noisy we could not talk easily. This is my favorite New Orleans brunch restaurant. I live in Alabama and plan to eat at the Ruby Slipper every time I am in New Orleans.

This is an awesome breakfast place to come to. I was in town for vacation and the hotel gave this place as a recommendation and great recommendation it was.
This place is on the small side from what I remember. It was pretty busy, but we were sat down fairly quick. Service was really good. I got the 3 little pigs. It’s an omelette with bacon, ham and sausage. The omelette was enormous! They didn’t skimp on the meat that they put in the omelette, so that was a plus. It was very good. The potatoes and the biscuit were the perfect sides along with this.
Special shoutout to Price. If you don’t know who that is, go there and see who I’m talking about.

My fiancée and I chose to eat brunch at a cute spot in Midcity. There was a small wait but it moved very quickly. I enjoyed the king cake cocktail while we waited, great way to start the day.
When we were seated, we were quickly waited on by our excellent waitress Kelsey. She took our drink order and let us know of the specials, which sounded great.
I ordered the special, two poached eggs over fried chicken with chorizo gravy. This was on a giant biscuit, which all I can say is wow. Order anything with a biscuit.
My fiancée ordered the eggs cochon. Two poached eggs over pulled pork, also on a biscuit.
My meal was excellent. Chicken was delicious and the gravy accompanied it perfectly. And again, the biscuit. So so good.
My fiancée received the wrong order but our waitress brought out the right meal before she could report it.
Mid meal, my fiancée decided she wanted to trade half her meal with mine. I was hesitant at first because I really enjoyed mine. But, the eggs cochon was just as good, if not better.
We ordered a bacon bloody mary as well, also highly recommended.
Overall, this was my favorite meal while in New Orleans. Amazing service, awesome drinks, phenomenonal food. I would absolutely come back to this location.

The Bananas Foster Pain Perdu was amazing. I also got the milk punch and a mimosa that was mostly champagne with a dash of oj. Really long wait though for other parties but since we only had 2 in our party we got in pretty quickly.

I really enjoyed the Ruby Slipper Café. We had excellent bloody mary’s and delicious spiked coffee. The brunch hit the spot. I had the Gulf Fish St. Peter while my date had the BBQ Shrimp and Grits. Both were excellent dishes that were filling and left us ready to go about the rest of our day. It was a cold day (for New Orleans) but the atmosphere inside was warm and welcoming with the waiters and waitresses treating you more like family than customers. I will definitely go back again.

One of my favorite brunch/​breakfast spots outside of the French Quarter. Food is usually really good. Unless you arrive at opening, there will probably be a wait on the weekends. Be prepared to stand and wait outside, as there is no room inside and hardly any seating. But you can order a coffee at the bar inside and wait with that to stay warm.
I’ve had the Eggs Cochon here a couple of times. Today I had the special, Eggs Acadian which was basically Eggs Cochon but with brisket in place of the pork. These hybrid Benedicts are usually very good. The brisket today was overly salted. Also, a few times I’ve been here I’ve felt like the poached eggs were undercooked — I like my whites totally cooked through. But overall, they offer delicious comfort food that keeps bringing me back.

Chose this location because we figured it would be less crowded. The wait wasn’t bad. about 20 mins for a table for two. You sign in at the front door and can wait outside or grab a cup of coffee/​drink at the bar. The coffee was pretty good. I got the skinny migas and my friend got the shrimp and grits. Both were amazing. Didn’t wait that long for the food. All the waitresses were super busy but still attentive. I can’t wait to take my boyfriend there. Will definitely be back.

Every dish was delicious. We tried the packed eggs with hollandaise and bacon, the fried chicken on biscuits, and some dudes of eggs, sausage, etc. only the fruit cup was a bit disappointing and predictable. Hostess service can be a bit brusque, but after waiting only 10 minutes (they had told us 25) they accommodated our group. Note that we were there at 8:30 am on a Saturday and still had a wait, so be prepared.

The food here was probably the best we had in NOLA. We had a Gulf fish St. Peter, which was excellent. But the dish that startled us was the Egg cochon benedict. The hollandaise on the top tasted like nothing we had ever had before. The food here is worth the wait time that you might have. Usually the restaurant is very crowded and you might have to wait a while to secure a table.

So after many years of missed opportunities I finally ended up having brunch at the original Rugby Slipper location. I’m not a big breakfast food person but I do love some veal grillades which they didn’t have those so skipping to the lunch items… The «Gulf Fish St. Peter» (drum on the last visit) was done well while the grit cake was really large and the spinach was nice but I really would’ve liked it served with a biscuit or toast of some sort. I was also left looking for a steak and eggs which I didn’t see… The Reuben sandwich is a nice option along with a selection of a few other sandwiches and the shrimp omelette can peak my palette.
Overall it’s a decent brunch and lunch spot with some good drinks and fairly priced beer. The Sunday brunch line moved faster than the brunch wait at Katie’s but I find I prefer the food at Katie’s more. For a causal brunch spot that can get you seated within a reasonable time this is a good choice.

Cute restaurant with a cozy atmosphere (and by cozy I mean waitresses bumping your chair and bustling people squeezing past you) but if you aren’t in the aisle, it’s a great place to eat. The noisy atmosphere and long wait outside in the heat/​cold/​rain are all part of its quaint charm. Be aware that even on a slow day you’ll be waiting at least a half hour to squeeze into a seat. The food was decent: I ordered the salmon Benedict and regretted to find out the salmon is chopped, not thin slices as I like my smoked salmon to be. Also a little too salty, including the omelette my boyfriend ordered. The double mimosas, though pricey, were absolutely divine. Love the touch of pomegranate! We will definitely be back for more, just maybe with a piece of toast to tie us over before breakfast.

This is one of our favorite breakfast places in New Orleans. Any time we have visitors, we bring them here. With the variety of excellent restaurants in the area, that should be the biggest testimony of how great the food is. Everything we’ve tried, we’ve loved. The favorites include: Eggs Blackstone, Corned Beef Bennie, Shrimp & Grits, Eggs Cochon, BL2T… The portions guarantee leftovers.
The only downside is the wait. Depending on the festivals, sports events, and conferences of the weekend, expect to wait for at least 30 minutes at each of the 3 locations. During the week, we don’t usually have to wait long.

I came here today for brunch to celebrate my boyfriend’s mother’s birthday. The food was delicious! I ordered the Chicken St. Charles which was such a great mix of flavors. The egg, biscuit, chicken, and sauce all worked so well together. I loved the little pieces of tasso in the sauce. My boyfriend ordered one of the specials of the day which was an orange flavored french toast stuffed with white chocolate bread pudding. We both loved it. It also came with a side of bacon which was perfect b/​c he was thinking about ordering bacon anyway. My boyfriend’s brother usually sticks to healthier options and opted for the omelette florentine which was made up of egg whites, mushrooms, spinach, and goat cheese. I took a bite of it and really liked that too! Prices for the meals aren’t cheap, but they are fair. The only problem was that this location is a bit small. My boyfriend’s mother wanted everyone to sit together (party of 11) and there was no way that could happen. We sat at a table of 3 and let everyone else (8 people) sit together. Large parties may want to check out one of the other locations.

Went and had a little weekday breakfast here today and, as usual, it was a good experience. I had the migas which is basically everything I love all on one plate. Eggs, chorizo, cheese, avocado, and a spicy sour cream-​ish sauce to slather all over, all placed over tortilla strips. My friend had the special turkey sandwich that had goat cheese and cranberry (?) jam/​sauce; it was pretty tasty. We both left full and happy. If you’re looking for a nice, quick breakfast/​brunch stop, I’d recommend checking out the Ruby Slipper.

It’s good, but I have to be honest and say the hype was a lot greater than the final result.
Be prepared to wait. That’s OK, because you can walk up to their small bar and order yourself a cocktail or coffee to keep you entertained while you wait. The staff and service here was very nice and attentive, which is great considering how busy they were.
The best part of our breakfast was hands down the grits. I like grits, when they are done right. Grits shouldn’t be watery, they should have some body to them. These totally were the right consistency. The biscuit was good too, a little dense but good. I enjoyed the migas, but I have had better, and it was kind of disappointing that they don’t have the option to upgrade to real maple syrup. We ate our pancakes without any syrup, because that corn syrup imitation stuff doesn’t fly with us. I am fine with paying a little more for the real deal, just give us that option please.

Best brunch place I’ve been to in Nola so far! We got there on a Sunday at 11 am and waited 30 – 40 min for a table for 2 – it’s definitely a popular among locals and tourists alike. Make sure you sign your name on the sheet by the door. They have water and a decent amount of outside seating for people in queue.
I got the EGGS COCHON (~$ 13) which was so delicious and filling. The pulled pork was soft and flavorful and the bread underneath was buttery – just a really good biscuit. The hollandaise sauce was absolutely perfect. However, I usually like my poached eggs a little runnier. I recommend this classic Ruby Slipper dish.
My sister got the EGG BERNIE (~$ 15). It’s fried catfish on a bed or artichoke/​spinach salad with 2 poached eggs and huge slices of toast. The fried catfish was a treat – crispy and fresh. The poached egg on this dish was perfectly runny and components the fried catfish well. Even the bread was good. I’m not a big fan of the artichoke salad because of the overpowering artichoky smell, though.
We also split a short stack BANANA PECANS PANCAKE (~$ 7) which was AMAZINGLY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE PANCAKES. There pancake was soft and aromatic, with bananas in between and roasted pecans sprinkled all over. No complaints here! Made me realize the banana foster must be amazing here.
The service was stellar. Once we got our seats we were seated fast and got our food pretty fast. Our waiter was friendly and efficient/​professional.

So… more like 3.5 stars. I’ve been hear numerous times. Sometimes the brunch menu tortures me, because I want to order one of each. The service is southern hospitality nice and friendly… However on my last visit they carded me… No bloody Maria for Matty C because despite the fact I am 40, have a salt n pepper goatee, my just expired license caused them to be sticklers and deny me service. I get it, you have a job to do, but C’mon. How about getting the manager to assess and make an executive call?
Even still, that wasn’t so bad… I was just slightly annoyed. The waiter was friendly and attentive and the good all came as requested (over medium, cheese grits, dry whole grain toast for example,)
My iced team and water were kept filled. The breakfast was great. i live this place, I just hate hard and fast rules. No reason for a bad review. 3.5. stars. Solid

Long wait, so long that we skipped it one day. But when we finally did make it inside on a different day, their shrimp and grits was damn good… the shrimp tasted perfect and served in a bowl on top of the grits with its own sauce for (I think) $ 13. I just wish there were more shrimp. It’s served with a large/​dense biscuit. As all other food in NOLA, it’s heavy. One of my crew was getting messed up on their double mimosas for $ 10 haha. I’d come again, although that’s probably one of a handful of items on the menu I’d go for.

The most amazing place for brunch. There is def a wait time. So just order up a nice drink and chill. It is so worth the wait though. Really. And I hardly rave about any place. These 5 star reviews are special. lol.
The brandy milk punch was pretty tasty. It had a nut meg taste to it. There was def an alcohol bliss since you can taste it. It’s sort of like spiked eggnog with the color and consistency, but the alcohol surprise is for those 21+.
The shrimp and grits was delish. They have a special version to this with much more goodness loaded in, but it comes out about once a month. You can sign up for their email list to get updates. The regular version on their menu was still tasty though and worth the visit. I am glad my shrimp and grits re-​do here was satisfying.
One of their special was super tasty. It was made up of the corned beef Bennie and croquet Madame off of the regular menu. It may look simple, but it was flavorful and very texturized. Yummie in my tummie. lol. Sorry, I cannot remember the special’s name.
Service was pretty good as well. Although they were busy, they’ll make it to ya for anything you may need. They were also very knowledgeable about their menu and the specials they had going on.
And I don’t believe the building directly behind this place is meant for Ruby Slipper so my friend just found parking along the streets. I’m unsure about this but I remember him reading some signs and saying something about it…
