Upper Iowa University (UIU), founded in 1857, is a regionally accredited, not-for-profit comprehensive university. UIU has been a part of the New Orleans community since 1999 with its convenient location at Jackson Barracks. Our evening classes, affordable tuition, accelerated learning plans, and flexible study options provide our adult learners with a successful path to earning their degrees.
History
Established in 1857.
1854 — Elizabeth Alexander, a pioneer woman living near what is now Fayette, proposes the idea of a college. 1856 — The first Board of Trustees meeting is held, and articles of incorporation are adopted. January 7, 1857 — Classes begin in what is called the «Fayette Seminary of the Upper Iowa Conference,» which is affiliated with the Methodist Church.
July 15, 1858 — The name of the institution is changed to «Upper Iowa University.»
1862 — The first commencement ceremony for baccalaureate degrees is held on June 26 in J.E. Robertson Grove. 2007 — The University celebrates its 150th year.
