YSB: Mod About St. Claude Crawl

For me, this bar crawl involved eating a ton of food and drinking cheap drinks at Kajun’s, watching some terrible comedians in the bar across the street, then taking a pedicab to Sugar Park, the final spot where more drinks and delicious pizzas were devoured. I don’t believe this was how the event was intended to go, but it was still a pretty awesome time.

I am an awful Unilocaler. While scrolling through my 65 drafts, I realized that I still had one last YSB review to write. I am disgusted with myself for taking so long and deserve all shaming my peers decide to dole out. That being said, I will get to my review.
When I read the description of the St. Claude Crawl, I was excited. The idea of exploring an area I didn’t usually explore while being transported place to place by pedicab sounded amazing. The reality was that the crawl wasn’t much of a crawl at all. I arrived at Kajun’s after a very harrowing cab ride. Inside the place was crowded, but it was hard to distinguish Unilocalers from regulars. There was a 2 for 1 special, but not much else going on. When I inquired about the other venues the information was somewhat vague. I also didn’t see any pedicabs.
I did thoroughly enjoy cramming in Jen L’s new car for the drive to Sugar Park. I also thoroughly enjoyed the impromptu after party at Always Lounge for the band Local Skank. There was even some dud dancing like a maniac with a sweat rag. I am not sure who he was, but he did have a pretty awesome bike.

Just like the 4 day blitzkrieg bonanza that was Unilocal Spring Break in New Orleans, writing all the reviews for that biggest of all bashes has been a marathon. I told Joi B. not to be surprised if a review or 2 trickled in a month after it was all over. & here it is a month later.
Though the Mod About St. Claude Crawl wasn’t so much mod or a crawl, it was a good meeting point & warmup for the Closing Party @ Sugar Park later that night. Kajun’s had the nice drink check-​in offer & a couple stand-​up comedy acts over at Siberia were pretty funny.
I heard that staff at Saturn wrecked our stopping by there as part of the crawl by trying to charge some horrendous cover to get in. If that’s true, they really blew it. Elites love the drinkey & we all would’ve dropped some serious $ there. Regardless, we did what Elites do best, still had a great time & avoided the BS.

Yay for drink deals, except by this point I was so exhausted (and late) that I didn’t really crawl. I showed up at Kajun’s then realized it was time to head to the closing party.
I think by this time in the weekend we were way too drunk and/​or tired. So maybe crawling wasn’t really happening.

I think I was already drunk before I made it to the crawl. Wasn’t even sure if I was going to make it to the crawl, but I did… we did! Luckily, our bed-​and-​breakfast was already in the Marigny so it was an easy stroll to the first stop: Kajun’s. We managed to crawl through three bars on St. Claude, but I never did make it into any galleries. Kinda sad about that.

it was a little confusing at first, but everyone knows that really the only place that you need to crawl towards is the bar. the check-​in deal at kajun’s was great, appreciate some borracho fare was available. i think the idea for folks to check out a few spots did its job though, as folks i talked to mentioned that they had hopped to at least 2 different places.

The crawl that was not quite a crawl. Except for me. Oh, what… did YOU go to Saturn? No, you did not. I can verify this as I was the only one there, y’all. I’m one committed little busy bee.
I made it to a few stops along the proposed crawl, and next time I visit, I vow to do the entire street. You heard me. Fearless.
It was no one’s fault really that the crawl fell apart, and great things ended up happening that night. The Mod Dance Party at Saturn was canceled, and a DRI show at Siberia threw things for a loop. But just across the street at Allways, we skanked it up and Portland even represented on stage (Melvin T, oh hello).
Sweet check in offer at Kajun’s, and pedicabs to Sugar Park much appreciated.

So i have to agree with Jaire Q that the event wasnt my favorite either. I think the main reason why was that it was kinda spread out all over the place along St. Claude. Some people just hung out at the Kajun Pub while others walked along St. Claudes to see some of the local galleries. What was confusing was that when I got to Kajun Pub i was told to go down to Byrdies to get a map of the local galleries. When I got to Byrdies there was only one person there and they were in the back room. So pretty much this event was kinda like an on your own event.

After spending most of my day driving or sitting in traffic, I decided to walk the rest of the day. I had no idea where in the hell I was going, or what was even up. I was just told to be at a bar at a certain time. So I walked up Royal St about a mile or so, and took a left on Marigny (sp?). I was told to look for a place called Kajun’s. Well, after I saw familiar faces, I knew I was in the right spot.
What are the odds of meeting up with Unilocalers that literally lived a mile away from me in Alpharetta, GA and then seeing them in New Orleans? I love that shit. Great seeing you Brent and Emily! I also ran into my other buddies who I got to see at the distillery earlier in the day as well.
After a few drinks, it was time to move on. Jelena Z took me on a ride in the Unilocal mobile to the next location, Sugar Park. It was less than a mile down the street. And we had to cross train tracks (keep that in mind for later). We went to Sugar Park to meet up with badass Joi B, and eat some dinner and get some more drank on (I will go into more of that detail for another review). It was great to be able to see Joi in action making shtuff happen and hearing stories about living in NY and KAN.
I then later found out that literally 10 minutes after we left Kajun’s, The Empress arrived there. I couldn’t believe it! What are the odds of that? when I told her I was almost done eating dinner, I would walk back to see her (as it had been over a month the last time I saw her).
So I did. I told Jelena and Joi I would be back one way or another (that did NOT happen, my bad, ladies!). On my way back, I was greeted by the train tracks again. This time, there was a freakin mile long train. I couldn’t wait any longer on seeing The Empress, so you know what? I hopped on that freakin train to get to the other side! Did I get dirty looks? I am sure I did, but I made it, and that’s all that matters.
When I got back to Kajun’s, getting to see her, Vanessa, and Tanya, well, it was a wonderful feeling. When they asked why I looked like I just got my ass kicked and I told them, they understood completely.
So, after getting to catch up and drinking lots and lots more, it was time to move on! I can’t remember what happened, except we kept walking down the street and saw another place that had some brass music. That was awesome, as the music they played screamed New Orleans culture.
Getting to catch up with some of my best friends and getting in the exercise and alcohol that my body needed, made this some fun shtuff! Did the plan deviate? It might have, but you know what, that is what makes the unexpected so awesome sometimes! Cheers!

Didnt really love this event. The female bar tender at Kajun Pub was completely lost and we had to ask her about the buy one get one free drink special, to which she answered: «oh, I knew you were Unilocalers» Well Duh, you just filled my Unilocal cup…
My favorite spot was actually Sugar park. The food was great and service was awesome. We got our free drink and the bar tenders were pretty cool.

This crawl was okay, albeit a little disorganized.
We started out at Kajun’s Pub for some karaōke. No, I didn’t sing, but other Unilocalers had fun rocking it out. I did like that this was a little more relaxed than past events and we were all just able to chill and hang out. I think by the time this event rolled around, most of us were pretty wiped out from all of the other amazing parties, so it was nice to do something low key.
After the closing party at Sugar Park, some of us decided to go check out a band at the Allways Lounge. It was a ton of fun over there and was a nice end to an amazing weekend.
