34th Street Dental

I’ve been a patient of 34^th Street Dental for four years. I picked them, back then, because they take my insurance (Healthplex) and because they’re close to my workplace.
My experiences with them have been uniformly excellent. I want to particularly pick out Dr. Lazar (Dentist) and Stacey whose-last-name-I-don’t-know (Dental technician, I think) as people who do excellent work and are very thorough in seeing that I am comfortable during the visits and not in pain when there is work to be done. I was just in today for a periodontal-​scaling with Stacey and I think she is in the top 1% on the scale of the politest and most thoughtful people I have ever had dealings with. Both she and Dr. Lazar have been very careful to use enough local anesthetics (Lidocaine, I think) that I was not in pain, and don’t seem to be «flooding» my mouth with the stuff — it usually wears off pretty quickly after I’ve left the office. They are easy to talk to, appear to be listening to and actually respond to any concerns or questions that I raise. I’m much more comfortable going to them than I have been to the average dentist in the past.
I would absolutely recommend 34^th Street Dental (which is actually on 35^th Street, note :-)) to anyone who is looking for a dental practice in Chelsea.

I went to this dentist for about 5 years, everything was fine until I had a crown put on there on my back tooth. I don’t remember the doctor who did it but she didn’t check my bite after putting in the crown. My bite was off and now 3 years later I am paying in some major ways. I did tell them that it felt too big and like my bite was hitting weird so they did some minor polishing of the tooth — BUT they didn’t do the strip test like my dentist did recently, which shows exactly where your teeth are hitting wrong. What 34^th st dental did was just ask me if it felt better — which it did but that doesn’t mean my bite was corrected.
So anyway now that whole side of my mouth is messed up –sensitivity — gum recession — stress fracture — all the teeth that are touching the crown have something wrong with them. Luckily my dentist now saw the problem immediately and we’re now working on fixing it. Because my crown was too tall, the my top teeth around it descended down to try to compensate which I am told is irreversible — so basically they screwed up that side of my mouth forever.
I really wish I could go back and not have it done here.

So my last visit at this doctors office was not so good so I left a not so good review.
However my last visit a few weeks ago was like night and day. The medical assistant was awesome her name was Ester she was very friendly and her bedside manners was impeccable. Dr. Saha was amazing as usual they all treated me with care.
I was super nervous to get my cap done and they made the whole procedue seem so easy peasy and I couldn’t believe it was all over.
Overall I was very pleased and I would definitely go back there. So based on this experience I had to give this 5 stars.

Went in today for a general cleaning and for some x-​Rays. The staff were super duper nice. The person who was going my x-​Rays (don’t remember her name) was extremely sweet and was concern if I was in pain in any ways. My hygienist Jackie was sooo nice! She took her time cleaning my teeth and was so helpful and really painless. Spoke to Dr. Lazar and he was pretty nice and explain a few of my concerns regarding my X-​rays.
Over all, will be making this office my number one office for cleaning. Super nice staff and highly recommend!!!

i came here for the first time to get a cleaning and i must say this place was nice. my wife came here for a cleaning and two co workers and everyone said it was nice. i had no problem with this spot and will come here more often now!

Very pleased.
Called with serious pain my lower gum and they took me right away. I was in the waiting room for all of 2 minutes despite arriving an hour prior to my appointment! I met with Dr. Allen who was a total sweetheart. In the past, I had met with Dr. Lazar who was nice on the eyes, but didn’t really take the time to talk with me at all/​explain anything. Contrastingly, Dr. Allen explained everything and she was very patient. I will undoubtedly request her the next time I visit!
My only «complaint» is that this place is called 34^th Street Dental even though their office is on 35^th street– for us directionally-​challenged people, this can be quite confusing!

34^th Street Dental was recommended to me by a good friend. I’m looking to have some restorative work done. I was so pleasantly surprised by the well appointed office space, extremely professional staff and gentle handling.

I liked this place. Probably would give it a 5 but let me explain.
I’ll start with the positives first. NO PAIN (in rocky’s trainer’s voice). I needed a root canal and the person who performs this is dr. kopppelman who only works on tuesdays here. if i were to give a review solely on him, 10 stars! this guy was great, friendly and made you feel at ease. even the way he talks to his assistant, you could tell he was a kind man. and he reassured me that there’d be no pain. and he was right. hell not even the anesthesia needle had any pain. he put some gel over my gums and slowly injected it, i didn’t feel a thing. then the root canal starts, no feeling at all. all the while he kept reassuring me that i won’t feel a thing cause he saw the furrows on my brows.
hell i’ll admit it, i hate the dentist, they scare me, the smell, the sound of the drill, the awful chinese dentist i had growing up with our backwards technology back then. it put a big booboo in my wee little heart. but dr. koppelman changed all that. for that, i say, I LOVE YOU DR. KOPPELMAN.
so what sucks about this place? the receptionists? no they were very friendly and helpful. hell i even got a $ 25 macy’s gift card for me and my friend for her referral.
the hygienist? no she was this pleasant inidan lady that took care of my bleeding gums very carefully while cleaning my dirty ass mouth.
the one complaint was the main dentist. i won’t mention his name cause you know how people get all sensitive these days for random Unilocal reviews. after my cleaning, i saw him at 6p. he seemed like he was in a rush to get out of there and basically just gave me very minimal info. hell i had to guess i needed a root canal. i had to ask if i had other cavities. i had to ask about everything. shouldn’t he be the one to tell me? instead he just said that i needed braces. he wasn’t friendly either or personable. when i go back, i’ll be sure to ask for another dentist.
i wish they were all like dr. koppelman.
oh and after the insurance, i only had to pay $ 200 for my root canal. not a bad deal. other dentist will rip you off, trust me, i’ve had different quotes.

This review is for Dr Paul Koppelman who is the root canal specialist here on Tuesdays. I haven’t seen other dentists here, so I can’t comment, but as far as he is concerned — the best root canal experience I have had so far in my dentally-​plagued life.
Not only did he carefully and patiently explain everything he was about to do, but he guaranteed and delivered a completely painless experience (unthinkable for my sensitive teeth, but apparently entirely doable). Total pro.
Following the numbing, which took up the most of the appointment time really and I hardly felt the injection (he pre-​numbs the area before injecting), the actual procedure was pretty fast, and gentle. He is friendly, patient, and you don’t feel rushed.
My co-​pay was $ 200 for the procedure (I’m on a high deductable-​plan). If you ring the office before your procedure, they will tell you exactly how much they’ll charge you, so don’t waltz in and be surprised.
As for the rest of the office and staff — I can’t really say one way or another. They are friendly, but not overly chummy — it feels like they are super super busy, so you’re kinda in and out. My wait was minimal, but then again, not to say they don’t have their lagging days.
Dr Koppelman — 10 out of 10.
The rest of the office — just your average dental office, nothing bad, nothing exceptional.

DO NOT GO! They overcharge your insurance which is a major problem, especially if you have a cap on how much your insurance company will spend per year.
$ 300 charged to my insurance company for a 5 minute «free» consultation.
Estimates for dental work: $ 10,000, and when I went elsewhere, it was way less than half that for the same work.
Do not deal with the financial headache/​insurance fraud that comes with this place.

I really liked 34^th street dental! My cleaning was practically pain-​free and the dentist was thorough and kind. I came here because my previous dentist was pushy and tried to sell me on procedures I didn’t need, I’m so glad I switched! This dental office is much more honest and fair. Plus, I like their online booking and their referral promotions.

I am 28 years old and had never been to the dentist. I went last week, and they took me on with open arms. Stacy explained a lot of the procedures like cleaning and fillings to me. We took X-​rays, learned about correct dental hygiene and scheduled follow up visits to monitor my mouth. Oh, and Adam makes going to the dentist completely worth it ;)

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST!!!
I’ve been going here for years, since my early 20’s. I wanted to go somewhere close to my work, I was young, naïve and trusted those «dentists».
First of all, they take gazillion x-​rays for just cleaning… mind you, this is EVERY 6 months. Do you know how much unnecessary radiation I was exposed to? When I refused to get fried every 6 months, they nagged and nagged me to death until I finally gave up. My suggestions were ignored and I felt completely unimportant and violated.
Second, prior to this I had perfect teeth, the old dentist was too much of a hike so I chose this place and all of a sudden I needed to fill 8 cavities, EIGHT!!! I didn’t think much of it at the time because like most people, you TRUST what your doctors and dentists tell you. Because you think they’re looking out for your best interest, they um, care? Then, the doctor proceeded to fill them up with silver amalgam a.k.a. KILLER MERCURY. Then I was transferred to a «root canal specialist»…why do I need a root canal!!! I asked, they said one of my tooth was too damaged and that was the only choice I had.
I went back to my old dentist because I was having all kinds of health issues… I was later diagnosed with hypothyroid in under 3 months. I also found out that 34^th Street Dental not only received ton of money from my insurance for doing just one root canal. They received TONS of money through x-​rays, «evaluations» not to mention mediocre cleaning. This place is a TOTAL NIGHTMARE. I hope my experience can save someone from health issues and mental distress. They DO NOT care about you or your teeth. This place is morally bankrupt.
NOTE TO SELF: NEVER, AGAIN.

I have been going to this place for the past 2 years purely because this place is very close to my job and they accept my insurance. However, the wait time is awful here. Every single time I have gone here I have waited atleast 35 — 45 minutes. I am currently looking for a new place because I really can’t handle the wait anymore.

NEVER AGAIN. This place is the worst — you are basically tossed around from dentist to dentist. Every time I’ve made an appointment here I end up with a different dentist and one is always worse than the last.
In January I made an appointment here because I was having tooth pain and I wanted to make sure I didn’t have a cavity. They took some x-​rays and I met with the dentist and he told me nothing was wrong with me and I was fine.
In March I had an appointment for a cleaning, but I was also having tooth pain in the same place and wanted to make sure I didn’t need a root canal. Did some x-​rays and the dentist told me that I need to have my wisdom teeth out at some point because they are impacted but that there is nothing wrong with my tooth and I just need to floss more.
Fast forward to June and I end up in the ER for tooth pain and then had an emergency root canal and wisdom tooth extracted. I KNEW I HAD SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY TOOTH YOU IDIOTS.
Useless.

My wife and I were patients for 3 years, primarily because of the proximity of our offices. We never really enjoyed going there and I always had an issue with my appointment. They are always running late and once they didn’t even have a record of my scheduled appointment. I had to show them a card with the appointment written on it before they agreed to see me (which was why I finally stopped being lazy and found a new dentist).
Anyways, it’s rare to see the same doctor twice and the staff isn’t very friendly. They’ll do the job if that’s all your looking for. I prefer friendlier staff and familiar faces, so we’re no longer going here.

Today was my first visit and it was as excellent as a visit to the dentist could get. The staff were very courteous and kind and explained to me everything.
I did not experience any kind of sell or judgement for not being a regular floss-​er. Which I have been scolded by other dentists. It was refreshing to feel that I was being treated as a human and not a future paycheck.
I will be a regular here and recommend them to everybody.

Just wanted to update my previous review. I’ve been visiting this practice every 6 months for over 9 years now and again, have never — not ever — not even once, experienced any of this «sell» nonsense another reviewer mentioned.
I go in, I am always seen promptly, I get my bitewing x-​rays every 6 months (and full x-​rays as prescribed and permitted by my insurance), a thorough cleaning by the most friendly and courteous hygenists I’ve ever encountered, and a thorough exam by the dentist, who will patiently and thoroughly respond to my questions and discuss any need for further treatment with me.
I’m beginning to wonder if some of these other reviewers are confused about which Unilocal listing they are posting to, because there is no way they are going to the same place as I. In 9 years, I’ve NEVER experienced the kind of rude service or hard sells that they describe and am pleased enough to keep going back over and over again. And if you care to look at my other Unilocal reviews, you’ll see that a) I’m not necessarily easy to please; and b) am not necessarily generous with handing out 5 star reviews.
I’d urge you to take some of these other reviews with a grain of salt.

After years of mulling and being unenthusiastic about dental upkeep, I have become an enthusiast thanks to 34^th Street Dental. It helps that I had to go back within the week but the receptionists actually remembered my name during my return visit. That means a lot to me in this busy city where you’re used to just being a number.
To top it off, all the hygienists and doctors are very friendly, attractive, and accomodating. Well, the women at least — I can’t say I spotted any men working here… what? No, I know there’s at least two, but i haven’t met them yet.
I would recommend this Dental Practice to anyone who’s looking for a place to go to long-​term.

I’m really happy that I’ve found this place — they give top-​notch dental care and are incredibly nice. No upselling, no scolding. (Flossing every day? Never going to happen. If I do it every other day, I’m doing well. And they know this and don’t pass judgment.) I usually leave with a big bag of free samples and a new toothbrush, and I particularly appreciate that the cleaning is built into the appointment, so that I don’t have to schedule it separately.
Dr. V is my regular dentist, and she’s awesome. She’s attentive and pleasant to work with. Their on-​site root canal specialist was also easy to work with, and when I had some problems with the tooth after the fact, he took time to come into my appointment with Dr. V and figure out what was wrong. I’ve always been able to get in right away and most of the time I’m not kept waiting. There was one memorable day when several emergencies cropped up at once and I wound up sitting in the chair, numbed to the gills, watching the entirety of «When Harry Met Sally» on the little TV monitor mounted to the ceiling of the exam room, but I gave them another chance and have never been sorry.
A feature I both love and hate is that they’ve lately taken to scheduling my checkups for me without ME having to go to THEM. It IS a little intrusive and presumptuous, but on the other hand, if left to my own devices, I probably wouldn’t faithfully get a cleaning and checkup every six months like I’m supposed to, so I don’t particularly mind.
