Business Owner

Dr. Ostad is a board-​certified Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon, a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He received his B.A. magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1987 from New York University. In 1991, Dr. Ostad received his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine. He went on to do an internal medicine internship at Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in Dermatology at New York University Medical Center in 1995. He completed a fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery, LASER and Cosmetic Surgery at UCLA.

Dr. Ostad is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at New York University Medical Center and a former contributing editor to the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery. He has authored numerous articles on topics including chemical peeling agents, hair follicle stem cells, liposuction, and laser surgery, and has written textbook chapters in Cutaneous Oncology (Blackwell 1998).

I met Dr. Ostad for the first time yesterday for an aesthetic consult for acne scars. I had been referred to the Doctor by two friends, one who had successful Mohs surgery and another who has seen him for various cosmetic reasons and is very pleased with her experience. I found the Doctor very present, caring and informed and adored his staff. I signed up for a series of laser treatments that I am looking forward to. I did wait in the office for one hour before being seen, which was difficult for a busy person like myself. I purchased some products as well, which seem to be of high quality.

Dr. Ostad is my favorite Dr. of all time. I have always found him to be kind, truly caring and thoroughly skillful at what he does. One can see right away that he LOVES his job and is committed to helping his patients achieve optimum results. I have seen him for both medical issues and cosmetic procedures over the past 10 years and have always been utterly pleased with the results. He never pushes me to do more than is absolutely necessary when it comes to the cosmetic options and the outcome has been perfect for me. No unnatural, creepy looking, overly filled faces emerge from Ostad’s office… ever. He’s just the best.

Worst experience I have ever had with a doctor in the United States. 10 minutes of visits, I was charged about 400 $ in moles removal plus about 700 $ from the lab and nobody ever even said a word it would be such an expensive procedure, even though I had inquired multiple times.
Upon a follow up conversation they said they do not know how much the procedures will cost. Incredible… it’s their job and they do not know how much they charge… quite surprising.
I am not complaining about the overall costs of the procedure. I just feel it should be professional and fair to discuss APPROXIMATE costs with the patient before performing the procedures, especially for such charges.
If you go make sure you know ahead of time how much they will bill for the procedures.

I went to Dr Ostad for a full body checkup last week and my experience was exceptionary. Upon arrival I completed the paperwork and got called within 5 minutes which is unusual.
He appeared very sociable, highly informed and during the checkup he really took the time to discuss my health and preventionary measures which I appreciated. Following the visit both he personally and the staff followed up with me several times both over the phone and by email. I’ve lived in NYC for 15 years and have seen a lot of doctors and this was truly one of my best experiences.

It is a personal pleasure to share what I can about Dr. Ariel Ostad and his practice, having been seeing him for quite a few years now. Elegance and integrity in addition to competence would make for a good beginning and an honest assessment. After performing a number of surgical procedures that had one in particular give him a challenge, I really came to appreciate the individual he is and the pride he exhibits driven by sincere desire to stay ahead of the curve with advancements in his field. I am a 60 year old that looks 10 years younger except for my forehead. I have those scowl lines that do not disappear no matter how much make-​up filler you apply. I went to Dr. Ariel Ostad’s office and was greatly pleased with my results. I know longer need to cover my forehead with bangs and side sweeping hairdos. The Staff and Dr Ariel provided professional and caring service. The reception staff are very pleasant and accommodating. I will be back time and time again. Thank you

I’ve been going to Dr. Ostad for quite a few years, I had to stop seeing him due to a change in my health insurance for a brief period which was sad. But now he is on my insurance again.
The receptionists are all super sweet and it’s a smooth appointment making process. Dr. O is always on time and does a full body check– he is super through and always takes a sample of any irregular moles or marks that look suspicious. I have to go every 6 months for skin checks because of my many years of visiting tanning beds.
I also had a broken skin vessel (vein) on my face and he lasered it off two years ago, I was super happy with the results with that too.

I generally wouldn’t recommend selecting your medical professionals based on Unilocal reviews, but for those that insist on doing so, I’ve had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Olstad going back several years. He’s efficient and friendly, and his staff knows what they’re doing. Now, I only go to him for basic dermatology, but I have complete confidence in him for that.
His practice is not cheap; if what you’re doing is elective, then I can’t believe you’d be surprised that a doctor on the Upper East Side was expensive.
My appointment today was for 2:40pm; I arrived five-​ten minutes early and I walked out the door at 3pm.

I have skin cancer. Years ago I was seeing another dermatologist for my problem. The other derm’s office was filthy and the staff was beyond rude. They were more like the staff at a Motor Vehicle Office. Because of this I looked for another dermatologist. Dr. Ostad was highly recommended to me by my personal MD of 25 years.
I have now been going to Dr. Ostad for over five years. He is and always has been extremely knowledgeable about everything I have ever seen him for. I was once misdiagnosed by two other physicians who said I had one thing, but Dr Ostad knew what I actually had. He prescribed me the medicine that I needed to finally resolve my problem. Thank you!
He has performed four surgeries and many other procedures on me with perfect results every time. He is a gentle, humble man who listens very carefully to his patients. I see him several times a year and he is simply wonderful.
His office is spotless too.
His staff is equally attentive. Recently, after a surgery, I had a question pertaining to my home care. I called his office, told them why I was calling and within an hour my call was returned by Dr. Ostad’s assistant who carefully listened and gave me the advice and answers I needed. She also told me she would do a follow-​up call the next day to see how I was doing. You do not get better than that.
I noticed the other Unilocal are rather dated. I am also sorry if your insurance is no longer accepted. I’d be upset too if I could no longer see Dr. Ostad. However, that may not be the doctors fault. The health insurance industry is crazy.
I hope this Unilocal brings Dr. Ostad’s reputation as a fine doctor, up to date and where it belongs. He is the best in NYC dermatology! No one is better.

For a tiny pinpoint of a carcinoma, I have a scar over 2 inches long on my collarbone. They said there was more underneath the skin, but two other dermatologists said «Why so big?» This was Moh’s surgery. Dr. Ostad said he would do it himself, then I got an assistant. Not a problem, but at least prepare the patient and give them a choice. She was very nice, but now, 10 months later, the scar is still huge and permanent; they said, «Give it time, it will barely be noticeable.» Yeah, right. Two friends also had similar surgeries and ended up with larger scars than they were told.

I’ve been going to Dr. Ostad twice/​year since 2005 because of a melanoma I had when I was 21.
This year he decided to drop my insurance (and possibly all insurances). I’ve been happy with him but over the last few years, his service has changed and seems like he’s trying to sell more products. I was told to consider buying really expensive creams and lotions that he sells which was really off putting as I go in to make sure I don’t have skin cancer, not for cosmetic reasons. His Facebook page now looks overly full of ads and contests and it seems he’s moved away from being a trusted, proficient doctor to being concerned with selling products and cosmetic procedures (I have no problem with that type of doctor — but I wouldn’t see one for skin cancer reasons) and it’s disappointing. Wait times in the office have also increased dramatically and went from being on time to over an hour late, even in the morning with one of the first appointments which makes me think he’s over booking his time slots. I’ve sat in the exam room for up to 45 minutes.
Over the years I’ve recommended him to everyone I know looking for a good dermatologist and he’s caught 2 melanomas on someone I referred in. Everyone has liked him. 2 years ago I would have given him 5 stars, now I want to give him 2 for the change in service, but he is a really good doctor when he focuses on that so I’m settling on 3.

I recently had an appointment with Dr. Ostad. I suffer from terrible acne scars on my face and neck area. He was extremely professional and explained to me my options.Dr. Ostad assured me that in time my scares would be smaller and less noticeable. He has given me hope since I’ve tried everything to remove these marks. I think that in time, I will be happy with the results.

Dr. Ostad is excellent! I received Ulthera last week for the sagging skin under my chin due to weight loss and I have seen a significant improvement in a tighter more toned appearance with NO needles or cutting. The procedure only took a half hour and can’t believe that more people don’t opt for Ulthera over other invasive treatments. I will definitely be visiting Dr. Ostad from here on out.

His office was unhelpful and unprofessional. Records were lost, and when we sent a complaint letter it was not signed for by the doctor, nor did we receive a response. It felt as though it was all about the money. And when we disputed a bill we were made to pay a late fee.

My wife went to see Dr Ariel Ostad for her annual skin checkup. She had been gong to him for years and liked him.
They found a spot of concern, the lab came back it was cancer like and should be removed. This was in November 2011. We were getting married at the end of April 2012. Dr Ostad said no problem it will be healed in plenty of time after all it was a very small spot being removed from the upper ankle.
Well it did not go well at all. To make a long story short she had to go to a cosmetic surgeon have painful debridements done and she is left with a dark brown spot the size of a baseball.
Dr. Ostad simply said «this happens sometimes». We incurred all the additional expenses from the cosmetic surgeon as well the cost of the not so successful treatments by Dr Ostad’s office.
My advice is find another doctor.

This place is generally ok but make sure you know what you will be charged for before having anything done. I had a mole removed that was hidden underneath the hair on my scalp. It was not discolored or abnormal so I did not feel the need to have it tested. It was a precautionary procedure because if it did begin to change, it would have been difficult to notice. However because I opted not to have it tested, the procedure was labeled as «cosmetic». The result is that insurance won’t cover it. So for a 45 second procedure (literally) I ended up shelling out $ 250. Maybe I should have known this but the physician’s assistant should have at least taken a moment to say something like «If I do this, we’re going to charge you for it. Are you sure you want it done?».
I’ve been to Dr Ostad’s office several times over the years for skin cancer screenings and I’ve only seen him once. The rest have been with the physician’s assistants. While I’ve thought the service was ok, this last visit has left me looking for alternatives.

Dr. Ostad’s seems to know his stuff, but patient attention, and appointments, are irritating weak points.
After waiting well beyond your appointment time, you’re assigned to a room where, eventually, Dr. Ostad breezes in, shakes your hand, and is out the door before you can say Jack Robinson. An impersonal conveyer belt approach is not for everybody.
I received the usual confirmation call two days prior to my appointment. I acknowledged the call. I showed up at the un-​godly early appointed hour this morning to be told that Dr. Ostad is not there, and his employees tried to make me feel bad for not knowing that. They finally found on their records that they indeed called me two days earlier to confirm the appointment. I received no apology, only attitude.
As I said, not for everybody.

This doctor is very unprofessional with a horrible bedside manner. I paid thousands of dollars to him to have a beauty mark removed with a laser. I went 6 times total and the mark looks the same. I understand these marks can take several treatments to remove, but his lasers didn’t change anything and he charged me a fortune. Each time I visited he looked mad I returned and treated me very rudely.
