Art House Restaurant

First of all, I totally understand some of the unfavorable reviews — the hostess, or as others described her «a lady with a frown» is definitely enough to make you want to turn around and leave. The only thing I can say in their defense (so to speak) is — she is really like that indiscriminately to Russians, non-​Russians and apparently to anyone of any color. I have tried to come to Art House twice, but was actually only able to be seated once — the second time our party of 3 was turned away due to full house, although the house certainly did not look anything near full…
Second, I am rating them 4 because the one time that I actually did get to eat there, the food was excellent and once you get past the «lady with a frown», the waiters were actually very good. The wine list is worse than bad, but the corking charge is $ 15 and to me was more than worth it (liquor stores are btw a block or so down in both directions of the restaurant). I maybe in the area again soon and will stop by to see how things go — so this rating may very well change.

Let put it this way, I was amazed by food and service there.
Usually restaurants in this area have the same menu, high prices and average quality. Every time you go to those place and think, that next time it is much better idea not to be lazy and go to the City.
However, not in this case. The food was delicious. And this word can’t describe my impression. I can compare this food to the best high-​rated restaurants I have been before. The prices are reasonable for quality and taste. It is a type of food, when you eat something and you can feel every bite of your dish. It had a great presentation as well, but I didn’t get a chance to enjoy it that much, because I could not resist my desire to enjoy my fish main course and desert. I have tried meat as well there. Also perfect.
Do I need to mention that service was on the highest level.
I can’t speak much about wine list, because I didn’t see it. I was drinking non-​alcoholic beverage home-​made there. Also great!

Great food, great times, everything was fresh came out on time. The dry salmon hanging was A good touch to the table décor. Violinist had a great choice of inspired music. I would recommend…

These guys specialize in presentation. All the food was ornately prepared. That’s not to say the quality wasn’t high. Whether it’s their Waldorf salad, their veal, seafood platter, cheese platter it’s all delicious.

If I could give them negative stars I would.
Arrived at 7pm after making reservations a few days in advance, walked in and were greeted by no one, after tracking down a lady with a frown and explaining that we have reservations for 2 for 7pm were lead to a super tiny table that could have been used by little kids to play teatime. After asking to be reseated the frown on the ladies face got even worse if that’s possible. After being reseated we spent 15 minutes reviewing the menu and tracking down a waiter or busboy or anyone with a pulse. We didn’t get water, a drinks menu, or even a hello. After 15 minutes we walked out and will never ever ever go there again. Not even if they comp the whole meal and have the entire thing cooked de chef.

Thouroughly unimpressed. I mean may be I was expecting too much of this eatery in the first place but left rather disappointed. Service is has much to be desired I mean much! Food was ok. I can’t say it was impressive but solid enough and well presented. The wine list though… I mean if you are to pay for a liqour license at least make some effort to make the list presentable but after searching through the page of wines we had to settle for something that in Russian would be called «Bormotukha». So overall I was extremely disappointed.

Food and service were way below expectations. Very disappointing. One $ 38 seafood dish was so dry it tasted like it had been sitting in a warmer since the previous night. Had the nerve to charge $ 20 to open a bottle of vodka and added a 10% service charge for non existent service. Never again.

So … We walk in at 7:30 and the restaurant is half empty, including the two empty outside tables, but we’re told they’re booked the whole night. Hmm … Could it have something to do with the ethnic makeup of our party of two? Non-​Russian white woman and African-​American man? Noted. Hope you close and all go bankrupt.

Beware! An immigrant ripoff joint. I asked for tap water with ice. They brought bottled and the waiter said they only serve bottled they didn’t have tap water. I asked if they are charging me for the bottle and he said yes they always do. I let them know it’s illegal to run an establishment without running water and walked out.

incredible food for a reasonable price. i love their salads — not at all overdressed, freshest arugula possible, pristine ingredients and great flavors! it is rare to have a delicious salad that does not rely on oil or cheese, but rather is light and flavorful. the beet & goat cheese salad and their Waldorf salad are incredible. I crave them, so it’s good that you get a discount when ordering food for take-​out.
i was amazed at the reviews here — i would guess that russian restaurant veterans are simply not used to actually good food?.. i mean, if you think Tatiana has good food or even passable food, then really, i have no idea what sort of a palate you must have. i see an unfortunate trend of russian restaurants that do bland, fatty foods or boring old under or over salted kebab get highest ratings and quality places like this are misunderstood.
no they are not «ro-​YAL» super fancy-​exclusive or offer a circus show with underdressed ensemble of talentless twats, but yea — they have high quality, flavorful food and offer it at reasonable prices. i hope people will give this place a try, regardless the reviews here because i did not expect much.

What an incredible place. There are too many things to say and not enough ways to say it. To start, the restaurant is unlike anything you will find in the neighboring areas. It is on the pricier side, but you definitely get what you pay for. The service was impeccable. Our waiter was friendly, helpful, and was very detail oriented. In one instance, I reached out to pour myself some water and our waiter quickly came up and insisted to pour it for me. That’s what I call excellent service. The food was beyond words. For the appetizer, we ordered the fresh oysters by the dozen, escargots, scallops, and the tropicana salad. Everything was very fresh and tasty. The escargots in particular was by far my favorite appetizer. They were baked in garlic butter with mozzarella cheese and were simply delicious. I highly suggest them and I recommend asking the waiter or waitress for some extra bread so that you can dip into the cream sauce they are prepared in and eat up every square inch of the dish. For the entrée, I ordered the filet mignon, which came presented in a stainless steel pan over a beautiful wooden serving board. The filet mignon was very juicy and tender and was layered with portobello mushrooms and topped with parmesan cheese. I highly recommended it. For dessert we ordered the marquis, strudel, wine-​poached pear, and finally the tarte tatin. The marquis was presented wonderfully with a pipette that was filled with a mouth watering raspberry purée. The strudel was flaky and was filled with apples and dried apricots. The wine-​poached pear was an original dish stewed with white wine and stuffed with vanilla mascarpone. Lastly, in my opinion, the best dish has to go to the tarte tatin. It
was heaven in a single bite. There is no way to describe it than to try it for yourself. One of the best desserts I have ever had and I have had plenty. The executive chef and co-​owner Gena Shtern puts his heart and soul into every dish and really cares about his guests. It’s not every day that you can come across someone who has such a passion for food. Plus, Gena finds time to walk around and socialize with his guests which shows how much he cares about making people feel welcome. If you are looking for an experience like no other, this is the place to go.

I was a little concerned coming here based on past reviews, BUT DO NOT BE FOOLED! It seems that management has taken them into account because waiters were extremely courteous, seemed happy to be doing their jobs, and service was not slow. That said, this place is not inexpensive but ever penny was worth it because the food was a work of art, served on thought out and artsy dishes — something I would expect in Manhattan. Never mind the fact that it was delicious! Definitely worth a night out with the fam or more formal event.

Went to a birthday at this place the other night. Let me start out by saying that the only thing that saves this place is the service. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. The music they had was not overbearing so that’s a plus. Worst thing about the place was the food. Anything that was not made on site or cooked was great. Presentation was great but as far as any hot food I’m pretty convinced this place doesn’t have a chef. Too much sugar or too much salt and most of the food was really just not edible. Skirt steak had some terrible paste like sauce, seafood pie tasted way too fishy and salty, mushroom cups were cold, chicken was dry and bland, duck salad was sweet enough to give you diabetes. I’ve been to many russian restaurants in my life and have never been not able to at least eat something until now.
Here’s hoping the regular menu is better than the banquet menu … Good luck everyone.

Really enjoyed this place. Not inexpensive and if you are looking for fast service, probably not the place for you. That said, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was nice.

I was a bit wary coming here based on the reviews but my mom really wanted to come so we had our Thanksgiving dinner here. I have to say we were all thoroughly impressed. The food was quite amazing, none of us had a disappointing dish. Appetizers came out fast and were served expertly, as were the entrées. We ate well, had fun listening to the singer who was quite good and were really really satisfied at the end of the night. It was pretty expensive and there was a $ 56 service charge added to the bill which they said was not the tip included. We didn’t argue it because everything was so good but the next day, reflecting on it, doesn’t seem fair since we spent a ton of money and a $ 100 tip. I would bring this up next time we go there and we definitely will.

Worse service I have ever experienced!!! & when they mess up left and right and a customer points it out, they snap and yell at you. So rude! Also very lazy waiters, ruined our dinner event. Food was okay…
& the singer —- horrible! If only our table had tomatoes to throw

This review is primarily about service. If service doesn’t concern you, skip to the next one. Russian restaurants are generally lacking in this category, but this one exceeded all expectations.
We were there for a banquet dinner for my friend and there were several instances when I was shocked at the way the waiters behaved. First, the restaurant was mostly empty, yet they crammed our chairs together so much, everyone was literally rubbing shoulders with each other and had trouble getting out of their seats.
Furthermore, judging by the politeness and the manners of the wait staff, they must have all been recruited directly from Borat’s village. For example, when we asked one of the waiters to take a picture with our camera, he said: «I don’t take pictures.» — I hope you also don’t take tips for the sake of consistency.
Also, we brought a home-​made cake in a nice reusable container, and they must’ve liked the container so much that they tried to steal it. I’m not kidding! The first server when asked about it said that he doesn’t know anything because he wasn’t attending to our table, yet he was the one who greeted us and took the cake to the kitchen. The other one started telling me that they threw it out because we didn’t ask them to save it. Really?! I don’t care how good your chef and the food is, but when you are dealing with such rude and indecent personnel, it will be an unpleasant experience. After explaining at length why they are responsible for the container and will have to pay for it, the manager magically appeared with the container in hand.

Was pleasantly surprised by the décor and the food. Great French style food for the price. The service was excellent! The food presentation is by far the best I’ve seen in Brooklyn. Everything was meticulously arranged on the plate or skillet. Will come back

I can’t say enough good things about this place. Besides its amazingly hospitable, knowledgable, attentive staff there’s of course the food. I came with two of my friends and my friend’s daughter for lunch. We ended up hanging out for hours — this place makes you feel welcome. I have to say — first reaction to Manhattan prices make you wonder but when you receive the order you realize: it’s all shareable size. I feel I must try more food. I want to come back for dinner as simply we didn’t eat enough for lunch. However, everything that we tried was great. Thank you for wonderful experience.

As I was starting to give up hope for restaurants in the Sheepshead bay area, I got a pleasant surprise when coming here for my GF’s birthday
For starters the interior took me by surprise, as I originally thought this would be a café type of interior, but it turned out to be a very nice restaurant, and very well decorated. As with most Russian style restaurants, they had a good sized dance floor, if you feel like getting your groove on when the music starts
The staff here was excellent, and very attentive
As is the custom for Birthday outings we always get banquet style.
Since this includes about 7 million dishes, I will just name a few of the standouts that you don’t see at most Russian style restaurant and as a side note, there were no dishes I disliked
–Liver Pâté — Delicious with the perfect side of jam
–All the salads were delicious, and I really liked the Shrimp Caesar salad, which sounds standard, but the shrimp were on point
–Seafood Pie — Great flaky dough, flavorful seafood inside
–Skirt Steak — Everyone on my side of the table couldn’t get enough, A must, that chipotle sauce that came with it needs to keep coming with it
A welcome addition to the Russian restaurant scene, and a nice change of pace from the usual dishes
