I love this place… I researched for a month of animals online in local shelters in NYC, for a male cat. This was about 4 years ago, I saw Simon online, a black white american short hair. that has had a rough life… HIV, pulled out all his teeth cause of gingivitis, neutered, etc.
So I went to adopt on the weekend, a lot of people were there. I had to wait to see someone to give me a tour of this HUGE shelter. its amazing. its like walking into Epcot of animal shelters. I saw all the first floor, which is sad but I was determined to find a cat that spoke to me. after like a hour of looking at animals… I asked about Simon, they brought me to the second level, more the hospital level, smaller cages and animals… and after seeing some more I met Simon… well he was a sweet demanding lovable mouthy little animal. and I knew I had to have him. Haha… the only problems where his health, which I love enough to care for him.
Its been 4 years now, he doesnt take medicine anymore. he is happy, spoiled and extremely demanding still. Haha. he is my family and Im very happy that I got such a great animal from the ASPCA. The only back drop I would say to this location is that their «medical history» of the animals.
I highly recommend going to a real vet after adopting your vet, dont continue to go to their vets. They are great at saving animals. but prolonged life is where they struggle. I went to Hudson Animal Hospital on the UWS and learned so much more I needed to know, that I wasn’t told at ASPCA. Now my kitty is gonna out live me. haha… one flaw, but they place is great. When I’m gonna adopt again, I will come here def.

We adopted our cat. Genie, from the adoption van last weekend and were blown away by the experience. The woman in the van, Eileen, knew our cat well, including his personality, medical condition, and how he gets along with other cats and even his preference for litter. She let us hang out with him in the van, no rush. It was surprisingly quick to fill out all the paperwork and bring him home. The ASPCA is like a dating service– you fill out a questionnaire with your preferences, and they test each cat to figure out its traits. They have about ten different categories of cats’ personalities, and let you know which will be the best match for you.
Our other cat, Dante, we adopted from the ASPCA (not the van) years ago and received the same level of service. (Warning: they’re crowded on weekends.) As a way to give back, we made Bergh Hospital of the ASPCA our vets. When Dante passed away recently, we brought him home to the ASPCA and were so impressed with the compassion and gentleness with which the vet handled the euthanasia. Thank you, ASPCA, for making our lives happier.

Every single staff member was helpful, friendly, and patient. The place is clean, and animals are really well cared for. The staff *really* know each animal personally. The thing that stood out for me was how patient the staff were — I never felt rushed — they answered questions, showed me techniques to bond with my dog, and seemed genuinely happy for us.
Definitely a bit of work to adopt and animal, but I didn’t mind, as they are trying to ensure the right pet goes to the right home.
Very important — they ask for a payment (donation) for the pet, but for that small donation you get a pet who is thoroughly medically attended, groomed, and assessed. You get (with a dog) a harness, collar, leash, food, and a portfolio of materials, including the pet’s history.
If you are looking for a forever friend, the ASPCA is absolutely the place to go!

Had such an amazing experience adopting from the ASPCA. My boyfriend and I knew we were getting kittens, and started looking around at different rescues. Many of them require a substantial application, which I understand, but really deters people from applying.
The process at the ASPCA was quick and painless. We visited, were met by volunteers who conducted a quick survey with us, and we were off. We fell in love with two little kittens, and we got to put them on hold. We were told we would be contacted when they were ready post-​neuter, and so we waited!
Once they were ready to be picked up, we were given a 48hr waiting period. I went back in and picked up our little love bugs who are just absolutely perfect. I was given a bag full of their wet and dry food they had been eating, got to choose out their collars, and went through all the important stuff (vaccine due dates, etc) with the adoption coordinator. A+ for amazing prep packages and feeling like the ASPCA always has your back when you need help.
My only issue with the whole process was the lack of communication between the volunteers. We had received conflicting messages about whether the kittens were ready to be picked up. The pickup process also took a long time to finalize– just keep that in mind.
Love the ASPCA and all that they do and stand for. Would recommend them again and again to anyone wanting to adopt an anima into their family!

We came on a Sunday afternoon and everybody greeted us really nicely. A volunteer took care of us and made us fill up a paper to try and see what kind of cat we wanted/​would fit best with us. We then went up and looked at the kittens. Grace, our volunteer was really sweet and respectful of our time with the kittens. She did not push us or anything. We fell in love immediately with a little one and decided to adopt him. We went back downstairs and filled up some regular papers. Jillian, the representative, was really nice. She explained to us couple of things and gave us a bag with wet and dry food for couple of days.
Overall our experience at the Aspca was wonderful.
The location is really clean and the cats seem well taken care of.

I had a great experience at the ASPCA three weeks ago when I got my little kitty Milly (old name Sandy). The staff were so helpful in taking me around the clinic to show me each cat and make sure that both of us would be comfortable together. So happy and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a new pet friend!

We adopted a cat from here about a month ago. The facilities were very clean and the volunteers were very nice and helpful. It seemed like every room we went into had a volunteer in there socializing a cat. Everyone seemed to really care about the animals, and they definitely seemed concerned about finding the right match. They also give you a voucher to the vet clinic for if the animal gets sick within 2 weeks of going home. It was overall a very good experience. Also, our cat is awesome.

Came here this past Sunday with an intention to just browse, after not having much luck with pet finder. Check in was quick, and as previous reviewers have mentioned, the façade is more colorful and inviting than the ACC. (And better smelling). A volunteer took me to see the cats — they didn’t have many, and no kittens available, but one 2 yr old Russian blue caught my eye. Asha was an owner surrender, and why anyone would give up this sweetie is beyond me. The process probably took about an hour and a half from start to finish, and I took a cab home with a crate in one hand and a bag of pet supplies in the other. Thanks to the ASPCA for connecting us and the great work they do for in behalf of animals.

Good place to go, nice and clean! staffs are friendly, I have been there few time looking for adorable cat, but because it’s not the cat season, so there didn’t have many kitten there. I definitely will come back! And hope next time I can go home with my new family member :)

Don’t buy pets in pet stores!!! Go to the ASPCA!
We I adopted a 4 month old kitten a few days ago and we are so happy. The whole adoption process was so quick and easy. On the day you go, make sure you have ID and a proof of address because they will need that to fill out paperwork. They’ll ask you if you ever had pets, what you’re looking for etc.
We went 3 weeks ago and fell in love with our kitten but we noticed that he wasn’t walking right (he wouldn’t put pressure on his leg) so we mentioned that to them. They took him for a checkup and it turns out his leg was fine (he had just been playing too roughly!) but they noticed he had giardia. Thank goodness we didn’t take him home that day! They kept him for 2 weeks until his test results for giardia came back negative, and they gave us a call saying we can now come pick him up. They gave us a week’s worth of special food for his sensitive tummy and some medication to keep giving him for a week. I thought that was just so great that they took care of him that way. Everyone there seems to really care about animals, whether staff member or volunteer, and they were all so knowledgeable and kind. The animals are treated well and they give us a voucher for one free vet visit (which is coming in handy because kitty has a runny nose). I highly recommend this place and you can call every morning to ask if they have new cats/​dogs.

My review went from 5 stars to 4 simply because I have had to deal with the animal hospital there since I adopted my kitten because he’s had non-​stop diarrhea since Day 1. Turns out he had giardia AND crypto.
5 stars to the hospital (well, actually to Adoptions because they’re the one who okay’d it) for running several tests for the cat free of charge because what he had was a pre-​existing condition. He finally no longer has crypto after weeks and weeks of treatment, but he still has diarrhea. I thought that was really nice of them to not charge us for his pre-​existing condition, I’m sure other places would have tried to avoid paying for anything. But, I’m giving 3 stars because the vets there rarely call you back… which can be a bit frustrating. Also, now that I’ve been to a different vet, I’ve realized just how crazy the waiting room is at the ASPCA animal hospital. They get very busy so it’s not their fault, but it’s a bit dirty, the wait tends to be a bit long, and everyone is in a constant rush. I think adopting pets at the ASPCA is great and I really recommend them for that. But I wouldn’t go to the animal hospital there and would rather seek out a different vet.

Very clean facility! Nothing at all like Animal Care & Control Of NYC. When you walk in you are greeted by friendly people. Immediately they give you a form to fill out and a short survey to take. A volunteer comes over and tries to help you find the perfect fit for you and your family. Unfortunately they didnt have a cat that was a good match for us, family of 4, 2 young children. But we were there for about 40mins max and were out. The volunteer gave us a flyer to try the ACC a few blocks down.

The staff was amazing; they were knowledgable, kind and professional! And i love my new little friend!

I adopted my second kitty from here this past weekend and had another great experience.
The volunteers are super helpful and friendly for the most part. They are also very quick.
In my opinion, they give you all of the information you should know about each animal upfront and once you choose to adopt, the information they give you to best care for your pet is very thorough.
I am so happy I was able to find a sweet new little friend for my other cat :)

It is so clean, and the people — volunteer and staff — are gracious, patient, and engaging. They were very sensitive to my needs and hopes, and I had all the time I wanted to play with the cats I was thinking of adopting.
I brought home 2 adults – Jordan, 8, and Cumberbund, 5 – and they are happily ensconced on my keyboard, in my bed, and are nestling into my heart. Thank you, ASPCA.

I was a little obsessed over finding a new kitten last year and went to all of the adoption centers in the city looking for a new kitty. ASPCA, while quite out of the way for me, was my favorite. Why? They had a quick process that made sense. Nothing like the Humane Society of NY where I had to wait literally an hour before I could see anything. At ASPCA, you fill out your paperwork which takes 5 minutes, and in you go to visit the cats.
Note that cats only mate like rabbits during warmer seasons, so if you’re looking for a little kitty like I was, make sure you start going in the spring and summer!
Customer service here is great — everyone is there to answer your questions and aren’t hounding you or following you around the place.
Unfortunately I did not adopt, but everyone seems to be really happy who did adopt from ASPCA.
PS: I visited a mobile adoption center once and they gave me a 10% coupon… if that matters to anyone!

Thanks ASPCA, for giving me a full-​blown identity crisis. I was born a proud «dog person», totally believing everyone leans toward one or the other when it comes to furry friend preferences. A dog is a man’s best friend, right? And what could truly compare to a wagging tail, fierce, protective loyalty, and the unwavering, unconditional, instantaneous love a dog provides every second you walk in the door?
A cat. From ASPCA. The animals up for adoption here are incredible. They’re very well-​taken care of while they wait for an awesome person like you to give them a forever home (insert «donate here» button!). Adopting from this impeccably clean, well-​organized facility is somewhat similar to dealing with a matchmaker (or «yenta» as my people say). Fill out a questionnaire, speak with an adoption counselor, and get some one-​on-​one time with a few potential candidates. You can even bring in your other «family members» (e.g., Feeny, my over-​eager rescue terrier) to see if the relationship might work out well for everyone. (If only we could do that so soon with men, eh?)
As a proud anti-​cat-​racist, I agreed to head straight to the all-​black kitten room. Statistically, these kitties are the least popular, unfortunately. After initially falling for Stewey, who sadly had chronic stew-​l problems, I met 8-​month-​old Gala (now Olive), and it was a purrrrfect match. After an adoption interview, we were able to purchase supplies from there (happily benefitting this wonderful agency), then take her home.
A year later, Olive is a very well-​adjusted, happy, healthy, cuddly, sweet little cat that never ceases to make me laugh with her aspiring-​Olympian antics. Defying all of my pre-​conceived «dog person» judgements, she has proven to be extremely loving and social and couldn’t bite or scratch anything if she wanted to. ASPCA truly helped me find my «match» in a cat, and I couldn’t recommend a place for animal adoption more highly.
Yep, I truly love cats AND dogs now — in fact, I may actually take more shameless selfies with Olive than I do with Feeny. In 50 years, that may just be me living next door to you with a few (twenty-​two) adopted little kitties, so come on by. Just don’t tell on me.

Came to the ASPCA on ¹¹⁄₁₅ after a horrific experience with the AC&C (my landlord screwed us and told them no big dogs allowed, even after we had confirmed the day before that they were allowed) Even after the issue was resolved and the landlord corrected herself, they would not release the Rotty-​mix we wanted without written proof. Instead of making it a wasted trip to the city, we hopped in a cab and jetted down to the ASPCA!
The second you walked in the door, everyone was so welcoming! I really wish I could remember our volunteers name but she had an amazing cat brooch that i LOVED! Any who, I was here to adopt a dog so we took a view of all the dogs. Many were on hold or already adopted, but we had a few that we liked. The one that stood out to me was Hazel, the 4yo dalmatian. She had been returned over a year ago super overweight which required her to have surgery on her back legs :(She was such a sweetheart and I knew she was the one!
The next day (¹¹⁄₁₆) we returned to adopt and met with the Adoption counselor Arthur who went over everything with Hazel and asked us about our lifestyles and other questions just to make sure it was a good match.
We had another volunteer bring Hazel up to the play room so we were able to see her up close and personal. She was a high energy handful for the first 10 minutes (I mean I would be too if I was locked in a room for most of the day) The volunteers who worked with her also gave us tips about what kind of toys to buy as Hazel can destroy just about anything.
Due to her extensive medical history, we also met with Dr. Wagner to go over everything and to ask any questions we had about her prior history, meds and diet. None of the information even slightly swayed my decision, though I was happy they were completely open and honest about Hazel’s special needs. They also offered that we do the foster to adopt program which we decided to do. In the 30 days of the foster period, the ASPCA will cover all related costs (food meds, etc) and if we return her we get back the adoption fee. Once the 30 days pass, it goes through like a normal adoption.
After that we went back down to the lobby, where it had become packed but all of the employees were keeping track of everything and everyone waiting. We waited about 20 minutes while all her paperwork was being done, then finally signed the contract, paid her $ 125 fee, and picked out her doggy tags!
10 minutes later Hazel was brought down, she had gotten the rest of her vaccinations and Heartworm treatment. We also received a prescription for her food, two bags and a case of her food, and her meds! She also is registered with her microchip, and dog license for the city.
Hazel couldn’t run out of the ASPCA fast enough! I could tell she was so excited and eager to be outside. On the car ride home to Queens she looked out of the window the entire ride. We stopped at Petland Discount to grab everything we needed and she was more than well behaved and friendly to the other dogs.
As I’m writing this, its been almost 10 days since we’ve had Hazel. She’s settled into our family and I couldn’t ask for a better dog! Even though the ASPCA doesn’t make any guarantees, she was already house-​trained so we’ve had no issues with her going in the house.
I would recommend the ASPCA to anyone looking to foster/​adopt, as they really care about the animals and the homes they go to. Go adopt today and give an animal their ‘fur’ever home!

I have finally embarked on what is sure to be a lifelong journey toward becoming a cat lady. And it’s all thanks to the ASPCA.
After over a half-​decade of dating, my wife has slowly nibbled away at my resistance to adopting a feline friend.* And I suppose it’s about time that I admitted I’m not even mad about it… because our new friend Batman is amazing.
There really was no question where we were going to go when we finally decided to pull the trigger on adoption, and I can report that it was the right decision.
The folks that work here are patient, kind, and just want to make sure that the adoption is a good fit for both you and your furry pal. Dorothea helped us navigated down Whisker Way (seriously) to the kitten room, and encouraged us to take our time in figuring out who was right for us.
There will be a bit of waiting involved as they get paperwork together, but that seems appropriate as this isn’t a decision to be taken lightly. Also, you’re probably going to be waiting next to some little girl who quite literally cannot contain her excitement over the puppy she is going to be bringing home. And that’s cute.
I must admit though, I was disappointed that although there is a Unilocal Check-​In offer for a free doggy loot bag, there is no corresponding kitty loot bag. That’s discrimination, people.
