Bagels on the Square

Not much flavor to the cinnamon raisin or salt bagels. Fine in a pinch but not as good as other.

I’ve come here a few times because I live right next to the place and boy am I thankful that I do! The bagels here are super tasty and they have so many flavors, plus so many different spread types. They also have tofu cream cheese — which tastes really good! I love their whole wheat everything, their blueberry, their French toast and cinnamon raisin bagels. But they’re all good honestly.

Ending my trip with a NY Bagel and it was worth the wait. So fresh and delicious, perfectly done. I ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese, salsalito turkey, and cucumber. The turkey was very tasty, with just enough spice. The cream cheese was perfectly spread around, not too much, not too little.

Unsanitary.
I’ve been here a couple of times, and my past experiences were far more pleasant than the one I just had. Generally, I’d give this place a 3.5 — decent sandwiches and bagels at reasonable prices.
Just now, though, I was told to get out of the store, for politely pointing out that the man making the sandwich I had ordered failed to follow conventional sanitary norms. After handling money with his hands, he started making the sandwich I ordered. I told him that he did not wash his hands or wear gloves and grabbed the chicken and lettuce with the hands that had just touch money.
He looked at me, smiled, took back the sandwich, and told me to leave.
I’m happy to remove this negative review once this basic sanitation concern is addressed. For the benefit of the owner of this establishment, this event occurred at 6:45 on Monday, May 16^th. The man making the sandwich is a chubby Hispanic man of below average height.

Went in around 2 on a Tuesday to satisfy my bagel craving. They have decent selection of bagels and cream cheeses but I was just underwhelmed with my bagel. Ordered an egg bagel with lox and scallion cream cheese. Boy was I disappointed. The salmon was fine but the amount of cream cheese on my bagel was abysmal, especially for nyc. It barely covered my egg bagel (which was stale womp womp).
The service here is great, the guys are so friendly, even double checked my order after I gave it to him. I hate to give em just 2 stars but I just don’t think the quality of these bagels cut it for nyc.

this is a solid bagel place. i like their bagels, but it wasnt the best thing i’ve ever had in my life. I’ve tried both the whole wheat and whole wheat everything bagels. they’re definitely fresh, and there is a variety of cream cheeses. its close to my apartment, so may come back to try their bacon egg and cheese bagels.
they can get crowded early in the morning — sometimes i’ll seamless them and theyre very speedy

Old school NYC bagel spot in the heart of the West Village with interesting flavors of top quality bagels, with lots of vegan cream cheese options! I heard the sun dried tomato tofu was excellent, so I tried that on an herbed sourdough bagel-​great combination.
Service was friendly and extremely fast. $ 3.50 for an excellent breakfast and/​or lunch. All major credit cards accepted.

The guys here are super nice.
I’m so picky with my bagels and I still very thoroughly enjoyed this one. Multigrain with scallion tofu spread. And I went in at like 6, expecting the bagels to be on the stale side, and it was still great!
They have a ton of variety in regards to cream cheeses and tofu spreads as well. I got a container of it to go. It’s so much better than the toffuti you find in the grocery store.

The have a large celection on cheesecream .
I have been there few times, for the breakfast they working very very fast, all very kind, all clean the food very teasty… very recommending

Bagels on the Square is my go to spot for bagels when i’m in NYC and I say that with a sigh of aggravation. I usually stop in here before a trip back to Maine to stock up, mostly because of convenience. The bagel quality is also pretty good, although they NEVER seem to have any egg bagels, even though THEY insist they have plenty every day!
Here are my consistent problems with Bagels on the Square:
1. The ordering set up is horrendous! First, this is a busy store with a sort of race-​to-​the-​front customer mentality, and while I am certainly willing to be assertive when ordering, makes for an unpleasant experience.
2. The «menu» is hard to find and unclear. Honestly, you just need to look around, take it all in and order based on what you think they might be offering.
3. The ordering set up is horrendous! Secondly, after you decide what you want AND put yourself ahead of the other customers, the men standing on the other side of the counter are obstructed by the bagel bins and are impossible to see! This has been true for as long as I have been coming. You basically need to shout your order into the open space and hope the guy behind the counter gets what you are saying. I’ve often thought that when they hire new people, special skills like hearing over a wall must be brought up.
4. Once your order has been placed (hopefully correctly), your food is then delivered to the front counter for payment, where there is again a rush to the front expectation. The counter people are not unpleasant, they just want you out in the fastest way possible.
Some people have agreed with me on all of this and still smile and shrug it off as a «quintessential NYC experience», as if somehow it’s all worth it in the end. Like the famous Seinfeld soup episode. Unlike the Seinfeld episode, after all is said and done, Bagels on the Square does NOT leave you with an exceptional product. It’s kind of like going through a big giant hassle for an ok bagel.
Yet, I still manage to return.
Go figure…

No. Nope. Never.
I don’t like giving bad reviews but what I experienced today was not a bagel. Definitely not a true NY bagel. What it seemed to be was more of a mass produced, commercial, coffee cart type of bagel. I asked for an Everything with CC and got something that barely had a schmear on it. That’s my review of the bagel itself, now onto my store experience.
Its an early Friday morning before the rush and I walk in to an empty bagel store which to me means I will be in and out. I was wrong. I’m standing there trying to make eyes with any one of the short guys behind the counter to start my order but it seemed like they were too busy with their conversation in some other language. You cant miss me seeing how I’m over 6′ 2″ so there’s no excuse.
I feel like this place could use a bit of an upgrade. I understand its probably been there forever but that’s no excuse for wood paneling guys. The display of cream cheeses has astro turf on the inside so draw your own conclusions.
The cashier who I feel might be owner was nice though.
This place has been on my Bagel list for a while and I was kind of excited to try it out but I was let down.
SKIP IT!

Everything bagel, okay. Lox, okay.
Have had much better lox and bagel sandwiches in the city. If you’re in the area and that’s what you want, this place will suffice.

A bagel store located close to W4th street. They offer a wide selection of bagels, cream cheese, sandwhiches, rolls, hot and cold beverages. I stop by for either a bagel or a sandwhich whenever I’m in town. Love the variations and the ability to try sth new every time. Staff is entertaining and extremely fast. Just to see the speed is worth a visit. If you are on your way to the office, it is a great stop for a quick pick up. Price point is very low considering the variety they have.
Stop by and tell me what you think. I really like it and everyone else I brought with me.

Ordered a sausage, egg and cheese on an onion bagel. Absolutely delicious. Very quick service as well.

I came here yesterday about 1:00 PM for some bartender friends. They had given me their order writing it out and even putting on the paper that the owner knows these bartenders.
It was basically 3 whole wheat everything bagels 2 with veggie cream cheese (with extra cream cheese) and 1 with veggie cream cheese (no extra). Apparently they do charge extra for extra veggie cream cheese so that meant that the money I was given was not enough. No big deal at least for me because it was not my money. Apparently it was no big deal for the bartenders either.
They are a rather busy place here which I guess is a good sign because that means the bagels and the ingredients they use are fresh. The guy taking care of my order had put the peper I gave them with the order details in the bag but I had to ask for the receipt.
My bartender friends seemed to enjoy their food. The two persons’ order’s were wrapped differently so they could tell which was theirs.

Quick service. In-​and-​out in a few minutes.
Warning: Be sure and know what you want before you get to the counter. In NYC, there’s no time for thinking.

Located in the West Village, across from Father Demo Square, Bagels on the Square is a non fancy place to get a delicious bagel. The store is small and it’s hard to tell where the line begins or ends. You are suppose to order from the guys in the back at the high counter tops. However they have boxes filled with bagels which prevent them from seeing you. Therefore be a New Yorker and speak up. I had an everything bagel with Bacon, Egg, and Cheese ($ 3.75). There is no space inside stand without getting in the way so there is no space to eat inside but everybody just sits outside by fountain. Th bagel was big and hearty. The seasoning mix was more garlicky. The eggs were real and bacon was fresh but a bit salty. They even give you two slices of American cheese. I enjoyed this place for BagelSunday.

I don’t know why this place is so highly rated it’s really nothing special. Came in to get a bagel with cream cheese, they didn’t have the first 3 bagels I asked for including everything… What bagel shop doesn’t have everything bagels! Got a sesame bagel toasted with cream cheese… Asked for extra cream cheese and didn’t get that either. The bagel was ok, nothing special. I’m being generous with my 3 star review.

These are such good bagels! I realize that a lot of people who have moved to the city don’t get the bagel experience, so let me lay it out:
You don’t go to a bagel shop for «atmosphere».
Yes: you should know what you want when you get in line. No, don’t go during breakfast if you’re in a hurry.
Having said that: it’s worth getting up a few minutes earlier and getting your butt out the door.
I tend to go late at night; the counter staff is great and the bagels are cooked ²⁴⁄₇ so they are always fresh!

Yes the line or whatever the mess of people in front of the counters can be confusing but you gotta find your way through!
Luckily it wasn’t too crazy and I just figured when he kept saying next in line I was the one next in line! I ordered my usual or something similar as it always changes depending on the bagel shop –a toasted everything wheat bagel low fat scallion cream cheese lox tomatoes. Moved down to the left where she took my order again so that I could pay while they were making it. She asked if I wanted coffee and I was like yeah why not so I got a small iced coffee and I think it came out to around 9 dollars (correct me if I’m wrong) but I definitely remember it being cheaper than what I usually get at Brooklyn bagel… I was out of there in less than 10. I did come when the rush was probably ended around 945am.
Food was fresh, fast and yummy. Iced coffee was iced coffee. Definitely go back there again.

The Quick: A 3.5 bagel spot (sometimes 4). The only to go option for bacon egg and cheese within a few block radius. Usually generous on the bacon, however service is not great and it’s fairly expensive after 11 AM.
The Details: Drunk me could literally eat unlimited bacon egg and cheese sandwiches. The BEC from the spot are usually fairly large and tasty, with generous bacon. Sometimes they forget to heat the bagel/​roll when asked, so the cheese does not melt (drunk me hates that). They also nickel and dime you for everything. Still the best option in the area, and you can sit in the small park nearby to devour.
The Damage: BEC are ~$ 5.50 after 11AM, and im fairly certain it’s even more expensive late night. During actual breakfast hours they are very reasonably priced.

Yum. The idea popped into my head while being in New York that I needed a good NY bagel and cream cheese. After deciding on the Village, I did a quick Unilocal search and was quickly led to Bagels on the Square.
I think the solid reviews are spot on — the service is quick, prices are fair, and oh yum — the bagels are oh so good. You have about 10 choices of bagel flavor, plus a ton of cream cheese options. Not to mention you could get breakfast or lunch sandwiches, so the possibilities are truly endless.
I settled on an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and ate every last morsel. I would definitely come back here again!

Bagel was decent and perfectly toasted. However the ordering experience is a disaster. I’ve been twice and both times:
(1) I had to talk to 3 different people behind the counter before I got someone who understood sufficient English to understand my order, which was not complicated. My parents are immigrants so I’m sympathetic to the language thing. I’m NOT sympathetic to places hiring people who lack the basic couple-​dozen-​words vocabulary to do the job you’ve hired them to do; and
(2) nonetheless they gave me the wrong thing. Wrong bagel type AND wrong cream cheese. Literally did not give me what I paid for, the very definition of failure.

So many types of cream cheese! You’ll never get bored that’s for sure.
Ordered a French toast bagel with lox spread. The lox spread was good, but can’t compare to actual salmon. My bagel was a bit burnt on the edges but I still ate it.
Good option when you’re craving a NYC bagel.

The bagels here are really fresh and there are so many selections to choose from (assuming you come here in the morning… I haven’t been here any other time). The combination of different cream cheeses and other toppings seems to be endless. My personal favorite is the jalapeño bagel with lox, capers, and plain cream cheese. I could eat this every day and not get tired of it!
Sadly, the whole experience of ordering is not very pleasant. There’s usually a fairly long line and you need to know exactly what you want, so you don’t hold anyone up. Which is fair enough, since these New Yorkers need to get to work and don’t have time for nonsense. But the thing is, these guys taking your order don’t always have such a good memory. Or they don’t hear you properly. So they do screw up your order occasionally, which can be pretty frustrating. Of the four times that I’ve been here, they screwed up twice. One time they forgot to put lox in my bagel and another time they completely forgot my order altogether.

Amidst the overwhelming trendy choices that are popping up in this neighborhood, glad to have a typical deli like this one.
Had no idea I ordered pastrami the last time I was here. Must’ve been so good that I was subconsciously drawn to get it again.
Overall, I like coming to this place because the prices are decent, the sandwiches are made pretty quick, and basically the food is awesome. Service is friendly too.
For both times that I had the pastrami, they did a good job of piling in the meat and making sure that cheese was nice and gooey. For the first time I had it on a bagel, it was so filling! Even for an afternoon purchase the bagel was fresh. For the second time, it was still good on the hero, but not as packed.
Would I come back? Definitely. Any place that sells breakfast all day has my vote!

This is one of the spots that makes me love my ‘hood. Locals convene on their way to work, or whatever other daily happening, and fetch their morning bagels with a sort of religious devotion.
The chilled case smiles up at you with multicolored cream cheese concoctions that rival the whimsy of an ice cream counter.
The Bagels on the Square team moves through the morning rush with an amazing efficiency, but never compromising on rapport with their regulars.
If you branch out from the titular offering, they serve up some mighty fine muffins as well. And if you have the time to spare, eating your morning treat in the little park across the street is a must!

You really can’t go wrong with a bagel, but Bagels on the Square is really, really good!!! They have a wide variety of bagels to choose from and I loved how they have about 10 different types of cream cheeses and other various toppings to choose from too!
I ordered a toasted plain bagel with peanut butter on top. It was very simple, but very good. My boyfriend ordered a bagel with cream cheese and he loved his as well. They also have a coffee and juice options if your heart desires, but we opted with water the day we went in.
Prices here are decent for the area. My only gripe was our bagels seemed to take awhile to get toasted and our peanut butter and/​or cream cheese put on top (there was no one in front of us and it took about five minutes). But, we weren’t in a hurry, so it was fine in the end for us.
This place is across the street from a small and cute park that has benches, so if you want to sit there and people watch, it’s perfect!
I’d recommend this place and I’ll be back next time I’m in the city!

Lines go pretty quickly and the bagels are fresh. A bit hit-​or-​miss when asking to have them toasted. Prices are decent.

Close to 5 bucks for 2 toasted everything bagel with jam ONLY.

Yes, because then this review will be just added to the tips section. Service wise was good. Then again they weren’t particularly busy so that might fluctuate.
The bagels itself was slightly over toasted on top as the garlic pieces were charred. Otherwise a fine bagel. Convenience within the West Village location might entice you to go here. However, I’d get off one stop earlier to go to Brooklyn Bagel or just walk there.

Went again for memory’s sake. I still love how these bagels are toasted on the outside and soft but dense on the inside… mmmm can’t go wrong.
Get the strawberry shmear and skip the walnut raisin one. Felt like I was ingesting fat and cream with the latter without any flavor but the strawberry one was good!!!
I also love how efficient the workers are. Gives it that NYC feel ;-)
