Specialties
Bike New York promotes and encourages bicycling and bicycle safety through education and events.
History
Established in 2000.
Bike New York dates back to 1977, when the Five Boro Bike Tour began as a program of American Youth Hostels. Known as «Bike New York: The Great Five Boro Bike Tour,» the event grew so much over the years that by the late 1990s it required a dedicated, year-round staff. Thus, in 2000, Bike New York was established as a not-for-profit organization. Since then, the Tour has continued to introduce generations of riders to the joys of cycling in New York City.
Two years after becoming independent, in 2002, Bike New York added the Twin Lights Ride to its fall schedule. In 2004, the Harlem Valley Rail Ride began, and the ride calendar has further expanded since that time.
Proceeds from Bike New York events support the operation and growth of its Bicycle Education Program, established in 2004, which offers free and low-cost classes and trainings for adults and children and advises individuals and groups wishing to bring cycling programs to their communities.
