Bo Law Kung Fu

My experience with Bo Law Kung Fu was mixed. I had my son join briefly and he liked it. But it was very brief since they were setting up summer programs and we did not want to commit to a 5 day weeks summer camp. I also did not see enough to know how well he would take to the classes for the long term. When I was there I was asked if I wanted to try and I found the workout great, Sih Andre was helpful and motivational.
I dont think this was the difficulty I had with Bo Law, it was the business ethics end of the program. We were supposed to get a uniform for my son never got it, the manual was makeshift and very unprofessional. Unbinded, no chapter (something made in a copy machine) and you really had to scroll through it to take in some of the details. They should of done a better job putting this together from a business perspective –it was unprofessional. In addition when I signed up for 3 months I was told I get a uniform, everyone in class had a uniform and so I thought great I hate wearing my workout clothes to Kung Fu class. When I signed up this was my expectation. However after a few weeks I asked if they had my uniform and they informed me that I only get a t-​shirt. I asked why they said it was in the manual (lovely :(, the culpability they were now putting on me. Even though the latter was discussed.
Secondly their schedule is not great. At least for beginners. There is only one class daily, 12n or at 7pm at night. None of which worked for my schedule which I told them before I signed up. When I informed them of this they said no problem just come when you can. Which I did, but after I missed classes I received unsupportive and accusatory feedback.
Kristen in my opinion was unprofessional and unwelcoming and told me reached out to ask me why I was missing classes. I apologize but advised her I thought it was ok based on my schedule. Then she seemed to take a more defensive when I asked for the uniforms and said they were doing me a favor after I paid them (I might add). When signing me up for their special with a month free .Well I didnt ask for any extra month I just would like to be treated professionally and I would like my gear which I was told was included in the price. But ok be obnoxious why dont you?
So I was getting a deal and had to eat the uniform cost. I really didnt see it that way, I paid for uniforms for my son didnt get it. Was told I would get a uniform didnt get it — neither did I get the t-​shrit. When I walked in no one said here’s your t-​shirt, here’s your son uniform come pick it up. Or make sure you come or will call you this is what we expect from our students. The schedule was not flexible enough for me and I advised them of this prior. I paid 400.00 to be treated like a child. I understand there are requirements and discipline required for Kung Fu. Im willing to give it. But all I ask is upfront tell me what your expectations and your policy is for the uniforms instead of scolding me like a child and making me feel bad for asking for what was to be part of the deal. So I am sorry I will not be back even though I really like the few instructors I interacted with. I also really want my money back!, poor business ethics and chiding should be grounds for going to BBB (which I thinking about) Overall I will not do business with a company that works in this manner and would not recommend them until their business end equals the quality of their Kung Fu class. Otherwise you might as well attend a Kung Fu class in someone’s basement.

It is incredibly challenging and you are fatigued yet you feel great enjoyment as felt/​experienced in the mind/​body/​heart
After an entire day of teaching, the master, Sifu Paul Koh finally changes into his «casual» clothes to leave the training hall. But he can’t leave just yet-​he starts correcting a student’s posture, form, or telling us a word of wisdom from his decades and decades of study.
But he’s there at least 6 out of 7 days of the week-​why the need to push for more?!
This is the dedication that is glaring among Sifu Koh, SiHing Andre and the incredible staff at BLKF. They not only have a truly sincere desire to teach you this system, but to help it benefit you outside the training hall, and consequently have a positive effect on society at large.
A tall order? Yes, but with their iron clad loyalty, dedication and sense of duty coupled with the well oiled machine that is Bo Law Kung Fu, I can’t imagine it being done any better
The dedication trickles down to the students at BLKF-​there is something unique about them and it is difficult to describe, but it is a quality crop.
The only reason I haven’t written a review earlier is because I have so much to say that I didn’t know what points to express. I wouldn’t be deterred from writing such a review out of fear of «all of NYC» coming, simply because it isn’t for all of NYC.
Do you have what it takes? Try it out and see, because if you do, you will be gaining an invaluable experience.

Traditional Chinese Kung Fu is hard to find these days. And its hard to train in too! It really is Kung Fu, meaning hard work and a skill you learn over time. It’s amazing to find a teacher with so much heart & knowledge & one who shares their knowledge happily! Who really knows their stuff & can teach you how it’s done! Without any fluff! Traditional!
You will learn physical moves that are so much more than you think they are and gain the mental clarity of a focused mind.
Leave your ego at home and really see what you can do. Then relax, breathe & let go all your worries, all your fears, all your stress. Just be. Be trained by Sifu Koh & Sihing Andre. Learn how to face the craziest city in the world with the clarity of a calm and centered mind. The lunatics may have taken over the asylum but they won’t phase you after you’ve trained with Bo Law Kung Fu! See you at the mo gwoon!

Bo Law Kung Fu is the antithesis of a traditional gym: you get a sense of community, of a culture, you feel part of a whole rather than burying your head in pointless physical activity and loud music. Don’t get me wrong, you also get a great workout, improving balance, coordination, strength and speed; but you do it in a completely different way that you’d do anywhere else: your mind is present and challenged. You learn how to let go, how to harness your inner strength. Day after day, you slowly notice the difference: you are growing out of your shell, becoming more «you», less afraid and stuck in old patterns.
There is a feeling of liberation through hard work.
Sifu Koh and the other instructors challenge you both mentally and physically, encourage and support you every single day. I love the place, the ambience, the spirit and the people. I wish I was more disciplined and consistent but I take it step by step, and see the results every day.
This is more about becoming part of a group, a shared experience, an adventure even than punching a bag. If you are looking for interesting and meaningful in your workout, this is definitely the place to go.

If you are looking for a place where you would like to invest on yourself, (Mind, Body and Skill) this is the place. The teacher and instructors care each students.
Why Kungfu? To me, Kungfu gave me a perfect balance between meditation and aggressiveness. It is almot like an active meditation. In addition, KF strengthened my previously injured ankle and knee.

Bo Law Kung Fu is AWESOME. they have a $ 20 introductory 1-​hour lessons that I had my entire bachelor party sign up for to start our 12 hours of ridiculousness. Bo Law’s instructors were super nice and they definitely kicked our ass with 1 hour of intense training but we learned a ton and had a great time.
Couldn’t have asked for a better intro to martial arts in general, but kung fu is amazing. I can now roundhouse kick (without falling over!). All skill levels and in-​shape levels welcome…
Super fun event for a group or rolling solo.

I know that today’s society is filled with immediate satisfactions, the latest Groupon/​Yelp/​Living Social/​Google/​KGB blah blah blah deals, and get-​in-​shape-​quick schemes. I know that many people here expect fast results in a results-​oriented metropolis, and all in a New York minute.
Kung Fu is not like that.
I chose Kung Fu because I am a person that believes in long term investments, and it has become an integral part of my life. I believe that it was partially fate that brought me to Bo Law Kung Fu. Before I started, I was a young, untamed, and very brash individual, and yes, admittedly unhealthy and out of shape. As I have grown over time, under the tutelage of Sifu Paul Koh, I feel that I have improved myself dramatically. I have gotten into better shape, gained much more confidence about myself, learned a lot more through Kung Fu about my own heritage as a Chinese-​American, and learned to discipline myself across all facets of my life. All along the way, Sifu Koh was there to knock me down a couple of pegs when my ego got too big. One of the best parts is that it challenges me mentally; it never, ever gets boring because there is so much to learn.
I highly encourage everyone to come try it out. Whether you’re sick of the boring gym and want a more mentally stimulating workout, or if you’re ready to take the next step in your life.

I recently bought a collective buying deal for this business to give to my husband for his birthday. My husband got hit by a car and hasn’t been able to use the deal. He called Bo Law Kung Fu to ask if the expiration date could be extended due to the extenuating circumstances. He offered to get a doctor’s notebas proof if they needed it. The sifu was nasty on the phone and pretty much told him he was out of luck. I have bought other deals from other businesses and if they have expired, the business at least will redeem the certificate for the face value of what you spent for the deal. Not Bo Law Kung Fu. They told us that the $ 125 that I spent for the deal, is now down the drain. I work as the manager of a fitness studio that has also done deals like this and if there are extenuating circumstances, like being hit by a car that can be backed up with medical corroboration, an extension would be given as a courtesy to a potential new client. Bo Law Kung Fu is clearly just concerned with getting their money rather than trying to cultivate new clients and feels it’s appropriate for their customer service style to be obnoxious. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

After six months of classes, I am in the best shape I have been in since high school. Aside from being an intense workout, the classes help to develop a greater sense of mental focus and make you want to strive to be better. It also happens to be a lot of fun, I enjoy practicing throughout the day. I also find it a lot easier to deal with stress and it’s actually helped me in my test taking skills. This is a long term commitment and requires a certain amount of discipline to make it worth while. As you would expect, the classes are set times, which may be an issue with people with erratic schedules, but they have later classes which is really a plus.
Sifu Koh is also an outstanding teacher as well. He seems to have that great ability to both push and encourage and really seems to care about each student. He’s also kind of funny.
It’s well worth the money if you have the time to dedicate to it.

I’ve been at Bo Law for almost a year, and I average 4 times a week. I never ever did martial arts before, and a friend suggested I give it try for a month. I was hooked! I signed up for a year after my trial month. I also quit the gym, because I no longer needed it. Within the first 3 months I dropped 10 pounds and since then added more muscle definition. The training there is better then I could have imagined and beside the occasional time I get to pick up a weapon I don’t lift any weights at all. I love it. The classes are very organized, and all the other students there are focused. It’s not like a gym. The students there are nice, and friendly which makes it another plus, because I really got to meet great people and make new friends. But it’s not all physical at Bo Law. What you get is a new self awareness, and an urge to make yourself better. Master Koh is always there morning and night, and he understands the personal needs of his students. Bo Law is my second home, and I never could have dreamed of the personal benefits I have thus far received or even would have thought I needed since I’ve joined. I highly recommend Bo Law for Master Koh’s wealth of knowledge in Martial Arts, and for the physical and mental transformation you’ll receive.

Sifu Koh is a very skilled teacher. He has crafted an excellent program, one that has sharpened my mind, greatly increased my flexibility, and has improved my balance. The skill is hard and, as an art-​form, requires a lot of discipline. I am proud of the small progress that I’ve achieved thus far, after 9 months of practice and I look forward to working on the skill for the rest of my life.
Bo Law’s environment is not like a gym. The prices are not the lowest, but it is more than your body that is being exercised and you are more than just a membership card to Sifu Koh. When you miss a class, he wonders where you were and if you were ok. When you’re skill improves the recognizes it and when you fall off, he helps you to regain your lost progress. The instructors at Bo Law treat you more like family than like a client.
If you are interested in just hitting a bag, then this is not your place. This is a traditional kung-​fu training hall, where everything gets a work out.

I was a student for a few months, and have to say that I was also impressed with Sifu Koh, the organization, etc.
However, I feel like I was quite misled in terms of cost. I was there for about three months, and then was «invited» to join their blackbelt program. Well, this program costs twice as much, and was an integral step in continuing my kung fu education there. I was not aware of this when I joined, and feel that they should make an effort to make this clearer to prospective students in the future.
Also, at the point where I was there, Spring of ’09, there were many, many students. So much so, that I found it difficult at times to move around as I needed.
