Campos & Campos Custom Tailors

The people are kind, efficient and have given me excellent suggestions. I have gotten a number of pieces tailored here. Most recently I shortened the sleeves of a sweater, they recommended taking it in near the forearm as well. Looks great. Professional and courteous.

Profesional tailors (used to make custom clothes, as I understand) that do a good job on alterations and repairs. Professional and helpful … knowledgeable.
However, I would say they are expensive. I would not go for simple alterations. The nearly $ 500 spent to adjust some pants and suit jackets was pretty excessive compared to other tailors I have used.

You get what you pay for.
Best tailor in nyc. Expensive? It’s all relative. If you have a $ 100 jacket or $ 300 suit, go to your local dry cleaners for alterations.
They took a $ 2,000 Armani jacket that was to long and made it look custom, $ 300 was well worth it.

I don’t mind paying up for excellent and reliable service. However, that’s not what Campos & Campos offers. I brought a brand-​new, expensive Eton shirt to Apollo for business wear. When I came in to pick it up, it had been taken in so much that the buttons were bulging open. «We always tailor as it was pinned,» he insisted, as if he would have pinned the shirt so tight that I couldn’t breathe, and implying it was MY fault for not telling him I didn’t like the pin placement. After a failed attempt to fix it by letting it out, it was clear that the shirt was ruined. To make amends, he said he wouldn’t charge me for the alteration! Gee thanks! Then he offered me a credit for future alterations. Unfortunately I don’t think I can risk bringing another expensive shirt to Campos & Campos for them to ruin, so that store credit will be going to waste. Stay away.

Nice people and they do a decent job tailoring your clothes but they don’t take credit cards which is frustrating in 2014. For some reason they do take personal check tho. Seems backwards

Apollo the owner of Campos & Campos is unapologetic about the premium pricing of his services, carrying an air of superiority – the kind one might expect from his Hellenistic namesake. But then I would be remiss and unfair to not point out that his tailoring and attention to detail are unparalleled.
Bring that Rag & Bone jacket or jeans that seemed like a great bargain at Barneys Warehouse to Campos & Campos, and Apollo will have the jacket sleeves shortened or the jeans hemmed to perfection. No matter that the item is no longer a bargain with the alteration fees included, you are likely to be pleased with the end result.
I would return to Apollo when I want something done right, and when money is no object – such as when you are trying to justify the sunk cost of an ill-​fitting item that was purchased 65% off its retail price, or when you have inflicted some damage on your favorite qiviuk and pashmina-​rich Brioni Vanquish II suit. I certainly don’t have that problem (or suit).

This is the worst experience I have ever had with a tailor. It’s one of the worst I have ever had with customer service, period.
I took a Theory suit here to be taken in at the sides, and to have the pants hemmed a bit. I was told they were cash only (big red flag should have gone up at this point) and they told me the price was 75 dollars. I thought that was a bit expensive, but the suit was 700 dollars so I figured I might as well make sure it was tailored beautifully.
When I arrived to pick up my suit, I received some cock n’ bull story that the price was misquoted to me and the actual bill would be 105.00 or something ludicrous like that. They were unwilling to budge and honor what I was originally quoted. They told me if I didn’t like it I didn’t need to come back.
I paid the exorbitant amount and resolved never to return. I get home and open up the garment bag – they have taken the Theory hangers it came on and given me some shitty generic combo hanger, and on the pants pocket, there is a glaring, 7-​inch serial number written in wax tailors chalk, white chalk on my black suit.
Wax tailor’s chalk doesn’t come off with just water, so I now have to have the pants dry cleaned, adding about 17 dollars onto the already ridiculous price of having it tailored. I attempted to call them 3 times and there has been no answer during normal business hours. I attempted to contact them via email and my message was returned. Apparently that email address is no longer working.
Terrible service, unprofessional behavior, and they wrote on the face of the fabric in chalk. And I have no recourse to be reimbursed because they only accept cash. I’d love to see what they file for taxes each year considering these prices and the fact that the receipts say 75 dollars and then they charge 105 dollars. They’re getting like 30% off the top of every order. They’re clearly criminals.

Expensive and slow like others say. But work like no other. My go-​to place for suit and jean alterations; the work they do here is impeccable on work of all level of complexity. Apolo and team are a staple of the neighborhood.
I am confused by the complains about expense. Why would you neglect to ask for the price of the service before you have the service performed?

I have been going to this place for years. They have repaired Chanel jackets, jeans, shortened pants, and fixed delicate blouses. They are wonderful with all kinds of fabrics and fits. Great alterations. A New York gem.

If money isn’t an issue come here, they are amazing tailors!
However, i was shocked when handed my bill. I had a skirt taken in and shortened. $ 109.00!!! The skirt wasn’t even worth that much. Oh well… it does look pretty damn good. Sadly, I wont be going back.

OH MY GOD they are so horrid! They almost ruined my wedding dress!
I had read in an online guide that Campos & Campos specialized in wedding alterations, so I went in to ask if they could make me a bow and a ribbon trim at the empire waistline of my cotton lace dress.
I bought the off-​white ribbon myself — 4 yards of — from M&J Trimmings (super-​reputable, so remember this as it becomes important later).
Apollo said that he could do the work I wanted, but there was something in his manner seemed unsure. I told him that it was okay if he didn’t think he could do it — I would take it somewhere else and no harm done. He said he could do it, so I left the dress and the ribbon with him.
And this is where it gets bad.
I was told that I could pick up my dress on Monday (it seemed weird to take more than a week for a tiny bit of trim, but I didn’t think too much about it at that point). When I called Monday to confirm that it was ready for pick up, whomever answered the phone asked me if I could come Tuesday. I could not, so they said to come only after 5pm. Sounded suspicious — like they hadn’t actually done the work in the allotted time.
When I got there, they brought out the dress and the bow was dreadful, not what I had shown him via demonstration or drawing (I even left a drawing of exactly what I wanted).
But even worse than that, the off-​white ribbon trim now had a BLACK SPOT ON THE FRONT!!!
First Apollo argued with me that it wasn’t a spot, which it obviously was. Then he said it must have been on the ribbon beforehand. This was highly unlikely– I bought it from M&J and saw them measure it out, plus there was plenty of extra ribbon to use — at least three times the amount needed.
Then Apollo said he could take off the bow, since it was sewn on separately from the trim. He took it off and tried to remove the black spot. Some of it came off, but there was still a dark smudge on the off-​white ribbon trim. NOT OKAY.
Now here’s the kicker: he tells me that «no one will notice» it! Um, hello, this is MY WEDDING DRESS and there is a black smudge on the chest that was not there when I brought him the dress!
He told me I didn’t have to pay for it (which was the right thing to do) but then dropped it into a BROWN SHOPPING BAG. I left in shock… and then walked back in to demand he put it on a hanger and in a garment bag, which is the way I brought it to him. He reluctantly agreed.
Thankfully, my dry cleaner told me to try shout wipes before dry cleaning the dress — and it did indeed get the spot out. But the whole thing was a NIGHTMARE.
I will never, ever go back and forget about recommending this place-​unless it’s to someone I really want to punish!

Sometimes you get what you pay for, and this place is expensive and worth it. They do amazing tailoring and can make a pair of Banana Republic pants fit like, I don’t know what… a pair of Paul Smith pants… if you just need a hem on the bottom of a pant leg, you might not want to pay the prices, but if you need suit taken in or the crotch lowered or a pant leg tapered or whatever, this is definitely the place, because they’ll do it perfectly…

I work in Chelsea and have been going to this tailor for 3 years. Though I think the prices are slightly higher than average, I have been a satisfied and loyal customer. However, the last 3 experiences I have had with Campos (and specifically the owner, Apollo), have been awful.
1) I brought in a dress to have altered and was told that I could pick it up on a Thursday anytime after noon. I came at 5pm and was told it was not yet ready /​to come back the following day.
2) I brought in a jacket to have the lining repaired. The price was on the high end, but it was an expensive jacket so I figured it was worth it. A few weeks after I had the lining fixed, it was ripped again in multiple places right on the seams.
3) I brought in 2 pairs of jeans to have hemmed and was told that I could pick them up on a Friday after 3pm. I came at 4pm and was told they were not ready yet /​to come back at 7pm. Then, when I picked up the pants at 7pm, I was surprised to learn that they were $ 18 each as opposed to the $ 15 each that appeared on the receipt.
After the 3^rd unsatisfying experience, I was honest with Apollo. I told him that I was not a satisfied customer and that he was at a risk of losing my business. I expressed frustration in being inconvenienced /​having to attempt to pick up my items multiple times, showed him my ripped jacket lining, and said I did not appreciate being misquoted prices. He did not care at all and told me I owed him $ 36 for the pants.
I feel obligated to share this feedback because I believe he demonstrated unacceptable customer service to a loyal patron. Simply put: there are too many talented and reliable tailors in NYC to continue to use Campos’ services.

I bought a bunch of pants without any hem — and wanted to find a new tailor closer to the L — this place rules. It’s $ 18 ($ 3 more than my prior fancy tailor) to have a hem put on but they do it so beautifully and lovingly (they put a little line of silky material around the hem) — it is worth the expense.

Great service, the experience was very professional and prompt. I came with an unusual request and they delivered, even better than I had expected. I would definitely go to them for any future tailoring!

Apollo, the owner is one of the best tailors I’ve ever worked with. His attention to detail is superb, and does not cut corners to achieve the perfect fit. For instance, I have one arm which is about half an inch longer than the other (sounds totally gross yeah yeah yeah hahah; but a lot of people have this) and a tiny bit of scoliosis. He compensates for it not only in the sleeve length, but with a small piece of padding underneath the shoulder that makes the fit perfect. Most tailors would bypass the shoulder adjustment and go for just the easy sleeve adjustment. I’ve had one suit and one sports jacket tailored by him both which came out very nicely.
Only downside: expensive, though I’ve paid the same for inferior work. Perfection doesn’t come cheap.
