Capital One Bank

You should go to the branch on 3^rd Street and Sixth Avenue. I highly recommend Dwight Dundas, a terrific personal banker. I like Capital One. The tellers at the West 3^rd Street branch are great especially Heather and Kevin.

Awful, careless customer service.

I’ve had a really bad experience here and would advise strongly against choosing to bank at CapitalOne and this branch in particular. The bank manager, Max, is very friendly (even to the point of being overly familiar) and yet when you actually need help, he hides behind corporate policy. After having consulted with capitalone customer service, I know for a fact that this manager opted not to be of assistance even in a situation where the bank manager has the authority to the decide the best way to proceed. In fact, he was condescending and inflexible and implied that it was laughable that the amount of money in question ($ 1000) was actually a significant amount to me and my partner. So, if you don’t feel like being mistreated and creeped out by your banker, go elsewhere.

First, recognize that Capital One is a discount bank. Their whole business is based on discounting /​unbundling, so don’t be surprised when the fees are low. Their credit cards are awful, but their international fees are the lowest in the industry. That said, you get what you pay for (even in a bank).
With this particular branch, I’ll simply list a few ridiculous problems:
— When opening my safe deposit box, the bank couldn’t get a box out of the vault. Since this «never happens», they then wasted 45 minutes of my time to figure out how to get another one out. Very secure.
— I spent this summer traveling out of the country. Having specifically called the bank’s lines to confirm my travel dates and countries, I had to call in 4 times — at my expense — to explain that the charges were not fraudulent.
— The bank’s telephone system states that the bank is open Saturdays 10a-​3p (like most banks). When you arrive at the bank on Saturday, you find that the bank is closed Saturdays.
This is a particularly incompetent branch of a pretty bad bank. There are SO many better banks in the area — Bank of America and TD Bank stand out — that you should seriously consider another, even if you’re required to walk an extra block or two.
