Cary Miles, DDS

A couple of weeks back, I had a dental check up at Slim Dental and was informed that I have 2 impacted wisdom teeth which need removal. They recommended that I go see Cary Miles but noted that since my insurance does not require a referral, I could go anywhere.
A week or so later, I was in intense pain and called the offices of Dr. Miles to schedule the nearest appointment. Unfortunately, that wasn’t until 2 weeks later. I kindly requested that the receptionist check the schedule of his partner, Dr. Gelfman (who ALSO takes my insurance), but she outright REFUSED because Slim Dental sent me there for Dr. Carey.
I pleaded with her that I cannot wait 2 weeks and that my insurance doesn’t require referrals but she still refused, telling me that different dentists have different agreements with the dentists that refer patients. WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT EVEN MEAN???
My insurance doesn’t require a referral and I’m telling you I’m in intense pain.
So in short, this is a practice that prioritizes kickbacks and favors ($$$) over a patients’ well being. Very UNETHICAL.
At the end, maybe it’s all for the best as some of these reviews regarding wisdom teeth extraction indicate that… well…they aren’t the smoothest of operators.

This review is for Dr. Gelfman:
I had 3 impacted wisdom teeth, and after a while the top and bottom ones on the left side started giving me some trouble. I went to see Dr. Gelfman at the suggestion of my regular dentist, and had a really positive experience. I initially scheduled a consultation with him, which included panoramic x-​rays. During the consultation, Dr. Gelfman took his time to explain the x-​rays and the pros and cons of the extraction process for my specific case. He was extremely patient and answered all of my questions honestly. He very thoroughly detailed all of my options so that I was well informed and knew exactly what to expect. I decided to go through with the extraction and scheduled another appointment.
The week leading up to my appointment, I was extremely anxious. When I arrived for the procedure, I was shaking. His assistant guided me into the room, and was so pleasant that I immediately began to calm down. Dr. Gelfman was incredibly warm and friendly, and talked me through the entire process. He even made me laugh a few times. The extractions were done painlessly and super fast! Since I opted for novocaine only (laughing gas would have cost me $ 135.00 according to my insurance plan), I was shocked and relieved at how seamless and easy the entire process was. At the end of my visit, I was given an after-​care package with instructions, and my prescriptions were called in immediately so they were ready for me to pick up within 10 minutes after leaving the office. Overall, I would 100% recommend Dr. Gelfman to others. Not even a little bit worried about getting the last one removed now.

So I went back for a checkup because I was worried about the severe pain I was experiencing day 7. I saw Dr. Miles and he was much nicer to me and explained everything in detail as to what was happening to me. I think that he just likes to joke around and use sarcasm as a way to make his patients feel better. Perhaps I wasn’t up for that before. Or maybe it’s because I mentioned to the ladies that work there how unhappy I was, and he was trying to make amends with me. Whatever the case, I can’t particularly say I would recommend him or go back, but my follow-​up wasn’t bad. I wish he would’ve explained everything in detail before my procedure, or after. Instead, he gave me a pamphlet to read and follow, which he mentioned to me again on this visit. My husband had a more positive experience with him than I did. I still remain strong as to how I feel about my surgery and Dr. Miles’ bedside manner. I want to mention that the office IS very clean and the ladies who work there are very sweet. I won’t be going back there though.

If you’d like a painless extraction experience, you might want to go elsewhere. Went to this guy a while back to have a wisdom tooth pulled. I notified him that I often require really large amounts of local anesthetic to fully numb the surrounding tissue. As he gave me successive doses of whichever –caine he was using, I could still feel pain in the area he was attempting to numb. I told him this and he replied that he can’t use any more b/​c of the epinephrine added, which is ridiculous, b/​c he could have easily and safely switched to another agent w/​o epi. But what happened next made that seem positively sane.
As he was poking around and I continued to have sensation surrounding the tooth, he ignored my protests about needing more to fully numb the area, and incredibly, said to me, «Well, if it doesn’t get numb in a few minutes, we’re just gonna have to go with the level we’re at,» and then walked out of the room. I had no idea what he meant, until he returned, verified that I was still feeling pain in the area, and then before I knew what was happening, STARTED YANKING MY TOOTH FROM MY MOUTH W/​O ENSURING IT WAS PROPERLY NUMBED. As I howled and writhed in pain, he condescendingly dismissed my protests and disbelief by telling me that I need to just suck it up b/​c it will be over soon, and when he was a kid, he never had anesthesia to have cavities filled! That’s great buddy, except that we’re in the 21^st century now, and you were tearing a tooth from my gums, not drilling and filling. Stay away.

I was sent to Cary Miles DDS by my usual dentist after I got a massive infection from a routine cleaning that was far too rough. Miles put me on an antibiotic and told me to come back in a week. It did not work and I had another week with another antibiotic. He claimed that I needed a root canal so I went to another specialist, who said that my tooth still was alive since I could feel cold and hot. Sent me to a periodontist who sent me back for the root canal. I ended up going to yet another specialist to have my tooth pulled. He said, «You are lucky that you are still alive.» Miles billed my insurance as if he was Dr. Gelfman in his same office. I never saw Gelfman. He sent me a refund check after I complained to the insurance company. I’d pay him never to have seen me. What an incompetent. He cost me thousands of dollars of future dental work. He appears to lack ethics as someone else posted on Unilocal.I certainly agree. Avoid at all costs!

I had to get 3 wisdom teeth out, and preferred an oral surgeon who was easy for me to get to and who used local anesthesia. I found Dr. Miles through my insurance and Unilocal,and am so glad I came here! Receptionists were kind and professional and helped set me at ease the few times I talked with them on the phone before my appointment. Dr. Miles was skillful and quick. I appreciated that he explained everything he was about to do. He also whistled while he worked. Don’t get me wrong – I hated getting the shots, and the process of getting my teeth out was horrible, but it went smoothly, and I’m glad I chose NYC Mosaic.

Came a few weeks ago for 4 wisdom tooth extractions and a frenulum clip and my pressure was too high. I paid the fee for the IV sedation and left. Now my pressure is lower and I’m able to come back for the procedure and they wanna charge me again and call it co-​insurance.
HELLO, you did nothing but take vitals and stuck a needle in my hand. You do realize I coulda brought in my own needles and even my own pressure cuff. That wasn’t worth $ 200 and I should not have to pay again. With this address, charging me again will NOT help pay for the paint, nor a door knob in here. I completely understand that you must make money, but is this really the way? Perhaps many of their clients pay outta pocket.
The staff is great and Cary is a fine doctor, but they’ve gotta do better with their billing. They take your health and dental insurance info, then tell you that medical won’t cover the sedation. If you know that, why do you need all of this information?
I like the place, but I’m not sure I’ll ever need them again. I recommend them, but with a billing caveat.

Having put off extracting a molar for years, an infection set in and my dentist insisted it had to come out ASAP. I came upon Dr. Gelfman via my insurance and Unilocal.Believe the hype — he’s friendly, the office is clean and modern, and you don’t feel like your questions/​concerns are rushed. He even told me to never let anyone touch my bottom wisdom teeth, because on me it would be tough and not recommended. I appreciated that Dr. Gelfman wasn’t trying to make another buck or $ 1000 off me as most dentists are, when it is suddenly «recommended» that you need a ton of things done. I opted for the laughing gas but Dr. Gelfman was so kind and funny that I probably didn’t really need it. 24 hours post op now and I’m feeling very relieved. It is nice to know that medical experiences like this still exist.

Fifteen years ago I needed a wisdom tooth extracted, and the removal experience by my regular dentist was extremely unpleasant and excruciating. So when my new dentist advised that I needed to have another wisdom tooth removed in 2012, I avoided the procedure for two years.
After experiencing increasing discomfort over the past six months, I finally decided to comply with my dentist’s instructions and get my tooth extracted. Based on a recommendation from my dentist, I reluctantly made an appointment with Dr. Cary Miles at MOSAIC (Manhattan Oral Surgery and Implant Center).
I set-​up my appointment over the phone with Julie, who was very capable and patient in answering my questions about the procedure, insurance coverage and possible after-​effects of the extraction, and generally did her best to calm my fears about my impending dental adventure. Two days before my scheduled appointment I received a confirmation call from Sonia at MOSAIC, who likewise tried her best to allay my concerns.
When I arrived at the office on the day of the event, I was impressed with the attentive staff who guided me through the mandatory form-​filling-​out and insurance verification process. Once completed, I was introduced to a high-​tech «panoramic» x-​ray camera device that moved around my head to take a wide-​angle picture of all of my teeth and root structure. The technician took a few minutes to review the x-​ray with me, explaining the position of my tooth requiring extraction as well as its root structure.
I was next guided into an attractive, spotless and modern-​looking operating room simply furnished with «movable» chair that could be positioned flat for the surgery. The attending dental technician (sorry… I forgot to ask her name in my high anxiety state) provided an overview of how the process would be performed, which again helped alleviate my fears and relax me to a certain extent.
Shortly after that Dr. Miles entered the room. Sensing my anxiety, he combined humor with professionalism to outline how he would approach the extraction, advising that the most discomfort I would endure would be the four pinpricks to anesthetize my upper jaw and pallet prior to the extraction. Despite his answer to my first question that he received his dental surgery credentials at «Bugs Bunny University» (which he later expanded to include New York University with a BA from Brandeis), he displayed an efficient, friendly and understanding «chairside manner.»
Once the novocaine kicked-​in, Dr. Miles began his work. Other than a very slight crunching noise as he wiggled my tooth, there was absolutely no discomfort or pain as he quickly and efficiently performed the extraction. His periodic humming during the procedure helped reassure me that this was a man who enjoyed what he was doing, further alleviating my fear.
The entire procedure was completed in what seemed like 15 minutes (although it was probably a little longer), and before I left, both Dr. Miles and the front office staff briefed me on post-​extraction precautions I should take and alerted me to possible discomfort I could experience once the novocaine wore off. I was given a prescription for Oxycodone… just in case I experienced any pain.
Overall, the entire experience was very positive, and dare I say, «pleasant.» I walked the 11 blocks back to my home, but not before stopping at my local Walgreens to have my prescription filled, «just in case.» I was feeling so good about my dental extraction experience that I even stopped off at my barber for a haircut before returning home.
It’s been nearly 24 hours since I went «under the pliers,» and so far, I haven’t experienced any post-​operative pain or discomfort. I also had a very good night’s sleep.
I’m very grateful that my regular dentist recommended Dr. Miles and MOSAIC, and I’m extremely pleased with the professionalism of MOSAIC’s office staff and the skills demonstrated by Dr. Miles. I absolutely highly recommend both Dr. Miles and MOSAIC if anyone needs a tooth extracted.
Who knew that Bugs Bunny U. could produce such a capable dental surgeon!

Dr Miles was very pleasant and literally did my apiectomy in 10 minutes! It healed perfectly and I didn’t feel a thing during the procedure. Highly recommended!

This is not their location!!! they are at 115 61^st st between lex and park… They need to update this bc i went to the location listed and the lady said it happens all the time. On another note, Dr. Gelfman did his job well and i was in and out in 20 min for my wisdom tooth extraction. The last time i had 2 removed at a different place it was terrible so i was pleasantly surprised. The assistant was so kind and caring and really made me feel comfortable.

I went to see Dr. Gelfman to get my wisdom teeth extracted. I found him through my health care website. I was really glad that I went here to get it done. The receptionist staff was quite helpful and efficient. I had a 3:30 appointment and waited about 10 – 15 minutes to be seen. Dr. Gelfman provided me with my options and was great at explaining everything to me. I was actually pretty scared but I felt at ease with the Dr and his assistant-​and I didn’t use laughing gas. The assistant was super friendly too as she kept asking how I was – I think I was humming and clenching my fists and closed my eyes tight during the extraction. The procedure itself was quick and Dr. Gelfman was super nice. He answered questions and provided me with lots of resources for taking care of my teeth.
